That story in Serj's memoir just shows how loyal all the band members are. To me, it reads that even though Daron, Shavo and John kind of considered moving forward without Serj, they really couldn't because without him it wouldn't be SOAD.

People need to give up any hope with this band releasing another album honestly. Serj is 56 years old. This band unfortunately was such a wasted thing. We could have had another 4-5 albums since they last released anything.

It’s so insanely obvious that Serj doesn’t really care to do SOAD projects anymore. There’s always so much skepticism in touring, making a new album, etc, on his end of things.

He has other things going in life. He is pursuing true artistic venture. The rest of the band? Holding on the early 2000's. Darren was always a toxic asshole, any fan knows that. It's simple, Darren liked the clout of being a "co front man" and wanted to make himself the main front man. Serj allowed it in an effort for creative input, and it failed miserably, and now he blames himself for the band's downfall.

It’s so blatantly a financial dispute. Serj (I think rightly) tried to use his leverage as the singer who basically got them on the map, to get himself a fair amount on publishing. His only means to do that was to withhold his services on new albums. Daron hasn’t budged, no new SOAD, simple as that.

They weren’t old geezers. Serj in particular looked older than he was with his goatee. He’s younger than Kurt Cobain by a few months, so at the time of their first album’s release, he was only 30. They’re not old. He has aged well actually, considering he looked so much older at the time. I too thought they were old back then.

It's such a bummer that they can't find a way to make things work. Soad was one of my favorite bands back in the early 00's. Memorize and Toxicity are still two of my favorite albums of all time. I think I read somewhere that Serj is still open to making another Soad album, maybe one of these days they'll find a way to make things work.

@@noperception5073 Seji has said in the past (as recently as last year) that he's open to making a new album if they resolve their creative differences. The video talked about him wanting to leave the band in 2017. However, in 2020 they recorded and released 2 songs. So he's clearly not against making new music with Soad - the issue is creative differences. There's no need to reply to my post with such a rude statement.

I do find it unlikely, but then-they did as you said make the 2 new songs. they might be trying to make an album? I find it unlikely, hell quite possible it won't happen. even if it does, Serj does not have the same voice anymore-20 years does take a toll on one's pipes-but we can hope. even if it never happens. because they did make new songs together, and I am interested to see what goes on moving forward.

I didn’t even know about that 2018 article of Serj’s explaining things that were going on as far as the band or whatever,at least from how he saw it, I was always told something completely different was the problem, but I’ve been a fan since Chop Suey, I heard it on MTV when it released and I went immediately to Sam Goodys and got the CD,the whole album bangs, and I had never heard of these guys prior to that and so a few of their songs had to grow on me because they were at the top of their game then and definitely had a unique style, absolute legends these guys 🤘

im not sure you can replace Serj....his voice is so unique. his style is one of a kind. his talent is so expansive, subtle and nuanced that I find it unlikely anyone could do him justice. On the other hand, would love to see someone try and see the band in full(ish) force again. At least they all seem to be at respectable differences. this bands music and its members largely helped shape my teen years and unlike many bands of my past, never died out. I could listen to about any soad song and still enjoy it. and often be just as blown away by it.

I think it's fair to say that Serj is a god tier talent that absolutely requires oversight. His 1st solo album was great. But that by his own admission...was mainly because he had tons of people around him changing his intended vision for his 1st solo album to skew closer to Metal. & by the time he realized it, the record was done. Which is why all his follow ups sound so off the wall compared to what we're used to. Scars is ok I think. Me personally they've had like 3 or 4 songs that completely hit for me. But it's noticeable how different they "feel" without Serj. I'd say that Scars is like the flat soda compared to something "freshly opened" that you get with proper System of a Down. To each their own though.

SOAD without serj would almost be a cover band. SOAD is getting old like we all do. serj is close to 60. im sure he cant handle it like he use too. probably wants to relax and enjoy the fruits of his labor.

He doesn't want to continue. The band knows they can't continue without his vocals. It's a standoff and us fans are the ones who ultimately lose out. It's such a shame when artists egos hold their own God given talents hostage and the fans that have paid for their lives and careers are the ones that suffer. Okay.. yall already rich af.. so just forget about the money and just write a new record for the fans who've given you the life's that you're living!! And then friggin find a singer to go on tour with and then just have Serj sing at Sick New World and whatever other festivals he chooses! The band members that want to continue CAN! Serj can pick and choose the shows he wants to play. But, ultimately, the fans who've literally paid for your lifestyles for the last 20+ years get a return on their investment. Out of basic respect, you owe the fans.. you owe the people who have paid for the life you live. Its crazy that everyone blamed Daron.. turns out it's Serj decision to leave his friends and coworkers and his fans high and dry. Get your friggin head out your ass and do the right thing! It's not just about you!! I mean.. sheet, Stef from Deftones ain't want to tour but he's playing local shows and has a fill-in for the rest.. doesn't stop the band.. doesn't hurt the fans.. thats awesome!! Why can't Serj do the same??!

Serj is not the one to blame for System not putting out more music. His compromise was very reasonable. If the band really wanted to put out more music, they would've leapt at Serj's compromise.

Read the book. It's quite eye opening to how Serj views SOAD. He wants to make art - understandable - but he doesn't seem to hold any real importance to the band and never really has. He says that he was pretty much done by 2003/2004 with the whole 'global superstar band' thing as he hated touring that much. His creative differences with Daron have only worsened as the years have gone on. The band made an attempt to record a new album in 2018 but quickly fell apart after Serj and Daron couldn't agree on almost anything.

Honestly, I'd rather it go on without him than call it quits forever. Just imagine how happy some great vocalist and fan would be to become the new singer for SOAD. Besides, it's happened before (Van Halen, Killswitch Engaged, Sepultura, Fear Factory).

I mean it just kind of confirms what we have all kind of already guessed. Daron obviously saw himself as the only creative force and the reason why the band was popular. Serj walked because he was being pushed out of the sound more and more. Both Daron and Serj found out that neither of them was the star, when their solo projects never hit the same success. It was always the mixture of their talents together that made for a legendary band. But by now the hurt is too deep and the band members too old to make it right again. Love this band, but it belongs in the past with the rest of my wonderful memories.

Quality over quantity 🤷‍♂️ not every band needs to consistently put out new music to stay relevant. There’s a lot of bands that are probably still going for the money

Honestly at this point if serj doesn't want to be in the band anymore who the hell are any of us to say otherwise. It's been 19 years since they've released an album, doing new music without him might suck for us fans but if it happens then there's nothing any of us can do about it

The three of em should just make an album without Serj. They don’t need him Darron writes all the shit anyway he can just sing if he wants or make it partly instrumental we’d all still buy it, their instrumental parts are amazing on their albums. I think they should.

Even, and especially, the best bands have these issues. It's with the territory. The Beatles, of all bands, famously got like this. The only people these bands owe anything to is themselves and eachother. I'd rather get no new music than songs that were weaker due to various internal struggles.
