Quick video on changing the serpentine belt on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0L engine.
Sorry for the video and audio quality issues.
The only tool you need for this job is a half inch socket wrench, or a half inch breaker bar, or belt tension tool.
I had a horrific time with Windows Movie Maker errors and bugs. Gave up trying to save the edited movie maker format into a usable video file format. The only way around the problem was to re-recorded the laptop screen with my cell phone camera to get around the problem. Will never use Movie Maker again.
Complete waste of time.

I drive and fix a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo....this engine in the video is exactly what is in my jeep, the other videos show something far different. This is the first video that actually shows an online 6 4.0 Thanks very much.

Sweet Jesus, I spent like 2 hours trying to pull the tensioner down by hand with a 1/2" socket wrench right next to me. This video saved my life.

Yeesh, I’m new to all this and could not figure out how on earth to loosen the belt tensioner since every other video references a bolt there, and this is the only video that finally clearly helped me figure it out! THANK YOU!

Thx bro mine just broke on the way to work and needed to know what size ratchet (3/8 or 1/2) to grab on the way back to my jeep when I get off work👍🏾

That high pitch is likely a bearing - just had my idler pulley literally shoot out it's spot - heard some noises like that at around 5:49 but every mechanic I've had look at it while working on more issues said it wasn't anything to be concerned with and now I'm stranded trying to figure this out lol. It's raining out here so this should be fun and you can replace your belt shocks, not too expensive. Think I'll come back here after I buy the pulley and get it in 🤞🏽

If putting the belt around the alternator pully was step 2 how come you needed to reduce the tension so soon? I have so much slack at this step

Thank you! Wish i woulda watched this before taking off the lil ring next to the alternator just to get the alternator off. Had to take off both the alternator and starter to test em, neither of em are bad so we got a statter relay. Batterys good, hope this does the trick!

I've had two of these type Jeeps. A 2004 and now a 2002. I really like them. Do they all have belt driven fans? Also the hood shocks went out on both of mine too. I have a wood stick. Great video.

What socket did you use to move the belt tensioner? Did you have to loosen it with the T-40 bolt???

Hi Walter, I just used the half inch square post on the wrench handle shown at 1:47, I didn't use a socket. The half inch socket wrench, fits the square hole in the belt tensioner. Belt tensioners, often have several different size square holes in them 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" so you can use your socket set ( no socket required, just the wrench handle). The jeep, tensioner only has the 1/2" hole. I used a fairly long wrench handle in the video, but it was not necessary. Any 1/2" will do. I did it while holding the camera, and used the other hand to remove the tension, then braced the handle against my neck to get the recording. You only have to move the handle about 120 degrees. Thanks, Alex Allen TX

Hey thanks for the info amigo - much appreciated! Thing is on my 04' the tensioner can be moved by hand and I'm wondering it it is shot or if I can tighten it so it snugs up the belt with that Torx bolt. Currently the belt is so loose that the alternator isn't charging and the Jeep is un-drive-able!!

It's shot - a "wrench" at Valvoline up-sold me a new serp belt a few months ago and must have cracked the housing when he did the change-out. Replacing today - hope not to strip that damn T-40 bolt!!

Hi Su su, The belt I used in the video is a Dayco Part Number: 5060883. Bought it from Autozone for $31.49. It is also a good idea to check your belt tensioner, and idler pulley while you have the belt off. When turned, they should feel very smooth. If the bearings feel rough at all, they need to be replaced. While you are buying the belt, check how they should feel when turned. Thanks,

Any advice mines is making a howling noise? Could it be it’s too tight?
@austin_semiconductor4153
@austin_semiconductor4153 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Rafael, I doubt that it is too tight, the force is set by the tensioner. Could be some contamination on the belt, or maybe the bearing. If you remove the belt again, and then turn the AC, alternator, water pump, and belt tensioner pulleys, they should turn smooth as glass. If any feel rough, have any wobble/play, it may be that the bearing is failing. Without the tension, bearings/pulleys may turn freely, but if it feels rough the bearings are failing, and will bind under load. Pull off the belt, and carefully turn each pulley, then go to your local parts store, and ask to look at each of those, water pump, alternator, idler etc. Feel the difference. You can do that check in their parking lot. Also make sure you don't have a coolant leak, or engine oil that may have gotten on the belt. That will also screech. Use break cleaner, or Starting Fluid spray, can easily wash off oils. BTW: If you are concerned about failing inspection, or a mechanic is trying to find something to replace, due to engine or, hydraulic oil. Spray it down first with a can of "Starting fluid," or "Brake Kleen" ( not a sponsor ; ) SMAC. It will just wash away, and the spray evaporates in seconds, leaving dry metal.
