Just looking at comments and demonstration. What would be the disadvantage of pex tubing in below zero and 90 degree differences in temperature? If glycol is added?

great system. I've been looking for a way to make my system operational in the winter ( cold in Montreal ) and was starting to think that was a lost cause. Would this work if the ply wood was turned the other way ( the copper as well ) ? I would mount mine to the ground and don't want to exceed the height of our fence. thanks Paul.

As long as water can drain you will not have a problem. The serpentine tube must slope downward .

Thank You for that information. My mistake. I guess glycol would only be a problem with evacuated tubes under stagnation

Uhm... I was astounded that you were pumping from the bottom of the collector to the top. What if you pumped the fluid to the TOP of the loop (past a float valve) and let it go? The pump, when off, allows the fluid to flow backward (unless it's a piston pump?), correct?

You cannot effectively control a system that pumps top to bottom.

I'd also suggest the water in the collector flow from top to bottom. But it's common "agreement" to do it the other way. Many years ago I read a book in German that explained about 7 advantages of the "top down flow" in the collector.

@@solarman69 I think you didn't understand his point. You're right with the pump being above the collector doesn't work.

That collector would need to be dead level to avoid freeze damage.
