How did the Portuguese Jews in Early Modern Amsterdam relate to African slaves, servants, and non-white community members? Mark Ponte will share the history of black people in Sephardic households during the Dutch Golden Age. One example, Hanna Vas was a black slave who had children with Moses Moreno-Monsanto, and later married him. Moses wrote four Wills, testifying to the complexity of the situation. Who were the black people involved in the life of the Portuguese Jewish community, what was their place in the family, and what is their legacy?
