In this video, top coach and service expert, Craig Bryant, explains how to use your serves to set up 3rd ball attacks.
This is where you serve, your opponent returns your serve and you take advantage of any weak or predictable balls with a strong 3rd ball attack.
In the video Craig explains...
- the importance of expecting your serve to be returned
- anticipating how your serve will be returned
- recovery position after your serve
- serving to suit your style of play
- ball placement of your 3rd ball attack
There's loads of great tips in this video to take your service game to the next level.

Yes, this is such a simple but important tip. I know some players who are great at doing topspin rallies, but always serve backspin, so find it hard to get into topspin rallies. They should serve topspin, so they can get straight into topspin rallies, which is what they are best at.

Good strategy. I see so many players doing a serve without thinking where the ball would get. I have a friend that gives a serve what would give him a backhand return but he is awefull at backhand :D. I say why you do this serve?

"Expect your serves to be returned". Somewhat obvious, but very important lesson. You see many players at amateur level who make decent serves, but can not even handle their own spin they have put into the ball if the serves came back.

Agreed. When you start expecting your serve to be returned and anticipate how it will be returned, you can really take you game to the next level.

Why do the forehand smash and forehand sidespin get neglected in male professional table tennis? Especially the latter can be quite annoying to have to deal with.

Relax the grip and all the joints. Then accelerate making the correct technical movemente, trying to get speed, not strength.

What is your opinion on deceptive serves to force a mistake, vs an easy to read serve that might result in a predictable return (as mentioned in the video)?
@craigyb22
@craigyb22 5 жыл бұрын
xTheRadioStar Great question. I think it’s for you to judge where you are having the success. If players a struggling to read the spin because of your deception then you’re able to take advantage of their weak return(s). If they are dealing with the deception, then it might be worth keeping the serve simple but trying to force a certain return. You could have a couple of amazingly deceptive serves but if they aren’t creating the opportunities for you, then there’s not much point in using it. Try and analyse how you’re winning the points / creating opportunities whilst playing the match.

My coach served me some backspin and no spin serves but he uses the same motion for both types of serves I can't read the serve so most of the time I push then the no spin serve comes then my balls pop up how do I read these tricky serves?
@Lewis08
@Lewis08 5 жыл бұрын
Jasper Low if someone does this serve and hits it at the part of the bat nearest to the handle, then it will have less spin that if you do a backspin serve but hit it at the point of the bat which is furthest away from the handle
@TomLodziak
@TomLodziak 5 жыл бұрын
You should also be able to pick out the rotation on the ball. For float serves, the ball is rotating much less. For backspin serves, the ball will be rotating more.

Hi Tom, thank you for this video. I couldn't help but notice at 1:36, you reflexed with what I would like to call a "back forhand reflex!!", where the ball goes to your forhand but you try to contact the ball with the back-hand side. Can you please give us an advice of how to improve to not to do that? I find myself in situations where the opponent returns the ball with a fast topspin to my forhand, but somehow I reflex with the "back forhand" move.
@TIEWCINDY

It's a bit ugly isn't it? I think it's a result of not recovering quick enough after returning Craig's serve. So I have stepped in, but have left my right foot too far forward. This means I now have a backhand stance, but the ball has come to my forehand side and so it becomes hard to play a forehand. So I play a weird backhand stroke. The key really is footwork and stance and making sure you recover quickly after each shot.

@@TomLodziak Hi What I am suggesting is that not all the people around the world are previlaged to get guidance of elite coach ,international coach etc By creating a group(channel) all coach and students will come under one roof and get guidance . People can ask doubts directly on group and get it cleared with coach or some other member.
