If we can be honest, some serve bot matches can be boring to watch. Ace after ace until you look at the phone and match is over. But it doesn’t happen all the time, depends on the circumstances such as if we get a good returner turning the match into a battle of the wills. But I think the reporters were not malicious on asking the question just pointing out on what makes great tennis matches or in this case bring more “entertainment” However, should it be banned? It’s really nice to hear from this guy. Thoughtful, articulate and from my perspective a young guy blessed with an inordinate height advantage but cursed with the disadvantage of that height but possessed with the wisdom and work ethic to be willing to put in the hard miles to overcome the disadvantages. . Changing direction, low balls, injury potential, balls hit at him. Etc. Reilly really appears to be on a quest to build and refine his game and fitness to a very complete level. It’s obvious he’s not going to be satisfied with the big serve and first strike style of play that we’ve seen from the almost 7 ft tall players so far. I’ve watched this guy play grinders and hang with them from the baseline for hrs and prevail. Just like Diego Schwartzman has risen to the top echelon of today’s players in spite of his height disadvantage I’m looking for Opelka to have a big breakthrough slam soon. Finally, his behavior and attitude on the court plus the other traits I’ve mentioned make him a great role model for the young boys I coach. GO REILLEY!!

I like the commentary on the state of American tennis. They are definitely being unfairly compared to an era that was impossibly good. The media and we as fans need to get out of this mindset of always comparing the newer generation with the great accomplishments of the past. Not every American player can win 14 slams like Pete did. Or even one slam like Roddick, especially with the insane depth of the men’s field nowadays. Everyone works their asses off and strives to make their own unique mark on tour, we can’t take that away from them by constantly comparing them to legends of the sport.

Artistic shotmaker? I think that term would be a better fit for other players. Tsitsipas has zero variety against players that offer something different. He plays in the exact same way and expects to win. Good forehand, average backhand that's getting exposed and is not near the level of other OHBHs on tour. Two things. While one may not enjoy watching "Servebots", the thing is that they are a necessity. Hitting such serves does force the competition to try to become better. It allows the top returners to also shine. As for the media, I can agree that they are too harsh. There's this sense of impatience for the next great player from the US, due to past success. What they don't understand is that aside from the game evolving, is that they also contribute unnecessary pressure onto players.
@diegosotomiranda41073 жыл бұрын
Thats my take in this, "servebots" are part of the variation to the sport the same with "pushers", the contrast between a great server and a good returner makes special matches, i agree 2 servebots playing eachother its boring specially in fast courts, but at the same Time 2 pushers or heavily baseline style can be a snoozfest when every point last 20shots specially in Clay

The problem with US tennis is not the athletes. Their potential is muted because they mostly grow up on hard courts all of which dictates a power game. Clay court players out of Europe and South America learn a wider range of skills and develop better strategy and better patterns since the power game does not work so well on clay. Their defence is much better. They also develop more patience and strike when the point is more obvious. Clay court skills transfer better to hard courts but not the inverse. The new style of play that has evolved in the ATP that now dominates comes from red clay court culture. American tennis will continue to suffer especially on the ATP because it has a foundation on hard courts. On the women's side the Williams sisters have done well with the power game but that is changing as more WTA players are opting to emulate the ATP style of play. Coco Gauf is rising on the WTA but she grew up on green clay surfaces in Delray. I think US tennis will have limitations until red clay gets discovered.

@@jackwilliam5341 but that goes back to Opelka's point of it being a different era with better opponents who have equal access to training facilities, physio, diet, etc. America's wealth & military budget means nothing when we factor in other nation's relative stability & equitable training programs. As for population, kid's sport programs in the U.S. typically favor team sports.

Nice guy, good player. Too bad about the Red Bull commercial that he's selling, not a healthy product.
