I love the interaction between Andy & Kim. 2 former top players and obviously good friends enjoying discussing the sport they love, fantastic! I'm very happy that Andy said at the end that you didn't talk enough about Sinner because you definitely did not. You are not alone nearly every other tennis pod and/or website has also focused on Zverev's problems. Jannik Sinner is one of a kind, he is a great tennis player with a mental strength that is simply phenomenal. In addition he seems to be a really fine and well grounded human being. Please Andy find the time to give us your thoughts and opinions on how he handles himself both on and off the court. Thanks again for best tennis pod/show there is ❤

The crowd at the Australian Open has gradually changed over the years. One of my first times going was actually to see Andy and I was sitting in the corner behind the services box watching and trying to read the serve from behind the returner. It was so great. We were going yearly but the cost now is so high and very unaffordable. Especially early in the week when you're seeing nothing but walk overs on RLA. The actual tournament has changed a lot also with more access to drinking around the grounds where you see more of these sort of booing instances with the changing crowd. I guess it's good that there are more people that are getting involved but this is the flip side with bringing in the newer wave crowd I guess.

Kim is so sweet! Sinner indeed looks unbeatable, but remember that we use to think that about many players that was very dominant for a period of time - Hewitt, Courier, Medvedev to mention a few. They were all greats of course, deserved their slam trophies and NO.1 ranking. But things can change quite quickly. Sinner won his first slam only a year ago and being dominant even less. Don't put too much pressure on him. There is no guarantee he will win 10 slams or more just because he had a great year. And there are A LOT of young teenagers coming out of the starting blocks as we speak..

Incredible episode. I love it when you and Kim nerd out and share your insights. I related to everything you both said. Particularly of interest was the human frailty of a young player in the moment and those of us who are observers often saying things that are short-sighted at best or insensitive at worst. Zverev need to get out of this mentality that he has to win a GS. Listen to what Keys said. At one point she said she just has to accept whatever acchivements she made and be happy about it and not to put pressure and stress about winning GS or whatever. And listen to Monfils, he is/was not playing to win a GS. Not to worry about what other people's opinions or ending up as never win a GS in history or whatever. That is the key (no pun intended) When you put the burden down your mental, the win is going to come. If it never comes you can still be okay with being the 10 GS semifinals. That is an achivement to and not many of players acchive that.

Great job as always, this is truly one of the best sports podcasts, let alone tennis. I have to say it was a little disappointing that you title the episode "AO Recap" and you barely mention the men's winner. I get that it's an American show and first time winner Keys deserves the majority of the chat, but leaving what Sinner accomplished to a discussion on "what can Zverev do differently" and to a question in the last minute on "what would you do against Sinner?" without even answering it, it seemed a little disrespectful to a player who won the last 2 major titles.

This is not about Djokovic. The crowd shouldn't boo or shout insults at players, interrupt their game. The players work hard to perform to be treated like that. Also, the players shouldn't shout at the referees, break rackets and cameras, hurt themselves, men players shouldn't change their clothes on court when women are not allowed to do the same. Really, what behaviour do we expect when organizers, media and players want a match to be also a show?

Kim is right being too young and not ready. Look at Emma Raducanu. She's ranked 50 something, which is in the top 100 so not that bad, but Leylah Fernandez is ranked higher around 27. Granted Emma has been ridden with injuries but was she really ready to win? It's possible. I hope for her sake that if winning before ready wasn't good for her, it doesn't keep her from rising back up the rankings.

Always nice to have Kim on the show - look forward to the one with Maddie. I think perhaps only JW had her to win but she really did take those matches away from her opponents - really pleased for her. Treatment of Novak was possibly the most disappointing thing I've seen on a tennis court. Some people just don't get it: these players aren't there to run themselves into the ground for you imho. And as a BTW; Roddick's post-match interviews were epic!, whether he won or lost. Sometimes his post-match was better than his performance on-court... 😁

Rafa accepted his fate, his mental strength is unmatched Being born with a congenital degenerative disease made him deal with more than other players. His career was on borrowed time and knew it could end anytime. He couldn't make long term plans He missed 18 GS, +\- 40 events and had to watch his career pass him by, a few times. His rivals kept playing You have to respect his mental strength. Living with constant pain which you don't get a break from. The disease weakening his joints and body. He is incredible.

47:45 -- yeah but did people question Rafa or Roger over injury? The 90s were all about Courier, Sampras and Agassi, but we never had this question over these men (dating myself here). With Novak, it's because he fibs all the time; how many tactical medical timeouts has this man taken?? It drives fans crazy that he does it so frequently, and comes out from the back a different player!
@Zain-mg3yk2 күн бұрын
It was always easy with Rafa as he spent a lot of time off Tour. Missing big events means you are dealing with serious issues. More so when you are still winning titles when you are on Tour It shows you are missing out on events which you could possibly do well in. Roger played through his back issues and hid them earlier on. When his knees were bad he went tour. He couldn't hide those. He was relatively ok healthwise until 2016. After that, he faced serious knees n back issues The performance during the injury period is scrutinised. They had noticeable differences. That helps with the criticism. Mostly going off tour means you are healing, takin care of the issue
@707ladyteeКүн бұрын
Spot on! I’m glad someone said it! For those who followed tennis about 15 years ago or so (like myself), knew of Djokovic’s retirement from matches. Much so that ppl because suspicious. No one should be booed if they cannot continue playing, however in his case it made one wonder if it’s legitimate or not. I guess folks did not forget those days.
@BOZ_113 күн бұрын
53:00 - Roger never quit mid-match in 24 years. if you can't play, withdraw between matches. that way people can get refunds
@parkercrossland4103 күн бұрын
It's not any different than if he sprained an ankle on set point and couldn't continue. It's just about how people perceive the injury. If it doesn't look to the crowd like an injury is physically affecting you, the crowd assumes you're fine and should be able to play. Retirements are generally super uncommon deep into slams because deep runs are so rare for most players. Djokovic is one of the few who doesn't need a miracle run to reach the same point again, and wasn't willing to risk possibly missing a few months as the injury started to affect him more and more. In his position I likely would've done the same thing. I, the player, absolutely am going to prioritize my needs over you, the fan. Is it unfortunate for fans? Sure. But a player doesn't inherently owe dick or balls to fans in terms of match length. Djokovic thought he had a decent chance to be physically capable enough to win, but as the match progressed and injury become more troublesome this changed.
@tylerEN2 күн бұрын
Also, might I respectfully add, Tennis Australia isn’t a charity. They aren’t expected to hand out refunds to patrons willy-nilly just because a player retired mid-match. There was a mixed doubles match that I recall was played just before the No-Zv match. They also scheduled a legends doubles match after to try and mitigate the crowd. Hypothetically, if all the matches were washed out due to rain (unlikely given we have many arenas in Melb Park with retractable roofs), then sure, a refund may be on the cards. I’ve been going to the tennis for over 35 yrs and frankly, I can’t remember the last time I was given a refund simply because a match couldn’t be completed due to injury. “Fans” really need to grow the fk up and realise the health of the players comes first, and not their hissy fits at being unable to get their moneys worth.
@ShaneGrecian3 күн бұрын
I think Zverev not winning a GS is not as bad as everyone is saying. Since Zverev made his first semi at 2020 Aussie Open, 14 of 16 winners were Djokovic, Nadal, Sinner and Alcaraz. Go back 10 years, 35 of 40 were won by Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Alcaraz, and Sinner. Wawrinka had 2 while Murray, Them and Medvedev had 1 each. Zverev has had opportunities, but he's also faced the best players in history. Worst thing to do is to turn this into a something.

Yup, the athlete's are treated as gladiators by the sport of tennis and probably any sport. So the sappy stuff that the commenters talk about to fill time is sentimental drivel. Doesn't even touch the state of the the athlete as a person, much less the psychology of the player that the commenters can't really know. Good show with Kim. Thank you.

The Zverev Sinner matchup is interesting. Zverev doesn't have the forehand mechanics to dictate direction under rally pace with Sinner. I think Zverev needs to up his risk profile on the backhand. Backhand to backhand doesn't bother Sinner so instead of the goal being to get into that exchange he needs to sometimes go big down the line or angle out to try to get an advantage. If he stays cross you give sinner the ability to dictate. That's really the only realistic thing I can think of without changing what Zverev has to work with.
