Thanks for the kind words. I would be happy to throw up a video on pushing out icons to desktops via GPO... I actually recently set some icons up at a local school district I do side work for, and can use that as an example. I thought I might have put a video out already on this topic, but I am getting old, and probably forgot to. Make sure to subscribe to this channel, and check the site regularly for updated tutorials - keep an eye out for the one you requested!

Nice video. I like the fact that you are not afraid to make mistakes and then correct them on screen. It helps with learning to troubleshoot and also shows it's okay to make mistakes as long as you fix them.

Thanks for the comment! Yes, I will add that to my "videos to produce" todo list (it's somewhat of a large list at the moment). The good news is, the next video series I'm going to start working on this weekend will require a 2nd server in the domain, so I can pump that one out in the process for ya!

Thanks - appreciate the comments! I never tried mapping an FTP drive before. I did automate a certain FTP transfer by writing a batch script many years ago but never thought about mapping a drive with it though. Something I would have to mess around with. I am not sure right this minute.

How do you handle multiple people needing multiple different shared mappings via GPO? I have done it via login scripts and telling their account in ad which script to run. Wondering if there is a better way
@davidcunliffe29867 жыл бұрын
You can use groups and item level targeting or even use users or computers to direct who or what gets a drive.

How do you set different sets of mapped drives for different users. i.e. John needs drives "F", "Y" and "Z", But Yola needs only "F" and "I"??
@PC-Addicts11 жыл бұрын
Great question. One way would be to create multiple Security Groups then make the users members of those groups. Those groups would have Group Policies setup with the appropriate mapped drives.

Sweet! Congrats on the new position/job! I would highly suggest setting up a mini lab at your home if you are able to. Download the trial version of Server 2008 R2, and have a couple of client computers setup (1 with XP and 1 with Windows 7). Basically, follow along with the videos on my server basics series (or similar videos, you don't have to watch mine), and you should be covered as far as basic sys admin stuff.

brilliant series, just out of interest can you have home directories/network shares and roaming profiles automatically for new users or do you have to configure it manually? thanks

The actual process of joining a server to a domain is identical to the process of joining a client. The only minor differences is that I would set my server's IP static, and place the server in my "servers" OU.

How do you create map drives for each user so that they can backup personal information?
@rrrussell10095 жыл бұрын
For this I would probably create a network share the map as the users “home drive”. Enter the unc path (\\server\shared folder\%username%\) in the home drive field within in the active directory user account.
@PC-Addicts13 жыл бұрын
@thestig888 Thanks! Yes, you can configure all of that to happen automatically. When I worked at a school district, we had roaming profiles setup, and during new user creation, all of the stuff happened on the backend.

I tried both methods as shown and it kinda failed...not because anything was wrong in your video. I had previously done it through GP and it didn't show the mapped drive. Using your method via Batch Script I guess highlighted the issue. '\\servername\NETLOGON' CMD.EXE was started with the above path as the current director UNC paths are not supported. Defaulting to Windows directory. Any idea why that is occurring? Haven't found much help on or solutions on forums that help.

Good video as always! I have a small request that goes along with this video, and that is - can you make a video on how to use group policy to manage certain/specific desktop icons for users. My company uses the public desktop to have a few select desktop shortcuts available to all users on a PC. The path of these icons can change, so to update them I currently do it manually because with windows 7, the users can't change the icons themselves (they are not local admins).

You shouldn't need to run net use.... If you want to have them map a 'home' folder, you should set this up within Active Directory Users and Computers. If you already have a ton of users setup and running with a home drive, create a new user and configure the homedrive from within Active Directory Users and Computers. Then look at the way AD automatically configured the folder permissions for that user. Match those permissions with the users that are already setup.
