I wish so, but Jared said yesterday that with the new patch cycle things may take longer. So if 3.23 comes in April then next 4.0 should come around September considering the polishing that will be needed for 3.23 and 4.0 testing, which would better be delayed for Citcon, otherwise 4.0 as end of year patch looks far more realistic.

According to what's been mentioned about the design, this is going to be solved by the fact that jump points aren't going to be a point-to-point thing, but rather a main point and also a whole bunch of temporary smaller points spread around the main point. So if you're worried about an ambush, you should be able to take one of the branches instead, and end up a couple of thousand km off from where the ambush would be waiting - at the main jump point.

I wonder if they could have the wormholes give off radiation that at first slowly brings down your shields and then later starts doing damage to your components. This would be intended to stop people from just camping out otherwise the campers ship would eventually be disabled, while the incoming ships would be at full shields? Might not work though because could you have 2 shifts of campers stay for a little bit until their shields go down and then the next group would come in. However it's still a lot less viable than just camping out at the gate. Could also make the radiation much stronger at the gate? obviously it'd need to be balanced carefully but maybe it might be a solution for gate camping?

I was busily testing this last night. The first run up to the jump point in Stanton was challenging as it wasn't clear what steps to follow. Specifically the "punch it!" part that isn't in the patch notes. But once chat explained how it worked, I did a trip from Stanton --> somewhere in Pyro (...) ---> somewhere in Stanton in a single play session. Lots of bugs, the most annoying being if you swap the QT drive in your ship, you can't go through. But the the key point is: it works! And for what it's worth: the "bouncing off" happens if someone gets into the portal before you do. It's a one-at-a-time system right now, and if you and your buddy both get clearance to go, and his ship is faster than yours, he'll make it into the portal a half second before you, and you'll then get YEEEEEETED!!! away.

The *dynamic* part is the crazy-hard part of the dynamic server meshing they have planned, but as far as the player is concerned, that just gets rid of population limits. Even if it takes them years to figure out the dynamic part of things and let each system have more than 100 people interact at once, just having the ability to move around the verse and allowing the game to expand by leaps and bounds is going to be amazing for players. I'm really glad they're getting static server meshing done so quickly, it really implies that they've finally figured out their back end object container streaming/location caching (whatever they're calling it these days) in a scalable way and can now make progress on things the user can see.

I assume the open/closed mechanic of the jump drive is to fix the lore they wrote years ago. Previously they said that Jump Points will vary in stability, where they may open and close between systems, essentially altering the shape of the verse. Some Jump Points have been rock solid, while other could bring new opportunities. This is also one of the gameplay loops of explorers, finding jump points and selling the data, creating a more dynamic universe.

I don't think it was alignment it my case but rather approaching with the wrong timing between the "Gate Opening" and "Entering Tunnel" phases as indicated on the HUD. Jump gates getting camped is going to be an _incredible_ opportunity for a dynamic event... UEE puts out an alert to all "militia" members that a sortie is being organized to eliminate the threat on the other side of the gate. Easily triggered by a certain number of deaths after jump in a window of time and a certain threshold of deaths per jump over that same timeframe.

I don't think they can be camped the way people think. The videos I've watched explaining how they work indicate you get spit out at random places in space. So it will be incredibly difficult to camp their actual locations. You would need a very organised group with long-range scanners and quantum interdiction traps.

If i recall correctly, they've stated they have the in system server meshing damn near ready. I assume the inter-system jumps needed additional testing because it's less "You are in server X at your current location, you can go to 6 other boxes in real space, and quantum to a different location in the same system so here's a list of locations you can jump to." and more "You want to go to a different system? Let me find the jump point server, prep a list of quantum jump destination server ID's, figure out what you'll need to see in the local area that (to your game client) didn't exist 5 seconds ago, and spool up the whole "wormhole" mecchanic's variables and information so all of the people on your ship see the same thing." within a star system, you'll just be handed off from server to server and the relevant information for moving into the next server is likely already pre-loaded from having to render what's going on in the neighboring "box" so to speak. with how quantum currently works, i'm assuming anywhere with a quantum point on the map will have it's server tagged as a destination and indexed so the game can find that quickly when you jump. with how dynamic the servers are going to be, I doubt having one unchanging list would work. When changing systems you probably have to unload the old list and load the new one, then connect to your destination and stream the information. To hide this transition time, there's the wormhole tunnel, which means at some point your ship is definitely its own server as you're handed between the two systems. least that's my guess. I have no idea, just an understanding of computer networking. Gods that must have been an absolute bastard to code...
@resresres1
@resresres1 6 ай бұрын
@@zerumsum1640as a programmer/developer I can guarantee they are not tagging quantum point destinations by servers. It would more likely just be done on the fly for a truly dynamic server meshing. That is the bounding boxes that each server controls is kept into an array/list. Then the assets to display and server your character will be on is done by location of your character in relation to those bounding boxes. As for jump point transition, it's probably purely more intensive because they are deciding to unload all the assets out of memory from one system and loading in assets into memory the next system.

@@zerumsum1640 I believe that the entity transfer process between the two 'zones' we have as solar systems right now is identical to the local handoff based on how they've described it. Maybe that's me being too hopeful, but that's how they've been describing it.
@zerumsum1640
@zerumsum1640 6 ай бұрын
@@RN1441 It would be similar, but I reckon the local zones are pre-loaded to some degree so it's seamless to travel between them, and also enable us to see across the zones seamlessly. Meanwhile, we don't have to see across a jump point, but we will be moving from the local pool of servers to another server pool entirely. I bet the jump points act as designated arrival zones, that can be streamed in quickly as we do the transit, and then the clouds around the jump point will hide the system loading in as we arrive. It would make sense to have designated handoff servers to enter and exit the server pool, these ones won't change while the general pool of servers can spin up/down a lot more dynamically. if it was just anywhere to anywhere i can see there being issues with the handoff having to find a valid arrival zone.

But maybe having the alignment be this complicated is a good thing? Maybe it will make travelling to other Systems more challengeing and, in the end, rewarding? I think it could be a good option to balance the Jump Gates and make travelling to other Systems more difficult which would balance the Jump Gates more. But thats just my understanding xD Anyways Its awesome to hear that the tests have been going good and I am really excited to see this in the PTU and PU soon!

Why? You could live your Firefly fantasies in *sniggers* Starfield. If Firefly went on for 20 more seasons, all the crew left and a bunch of monkeys on typewriters started writing the script.
@Kehvan
@Kehvan 6 ай бұрын
@@All_Hail_Chael *_Why?_* Because the basic story outline of Firefly could fit into Star Citizen lore. Basically, there's some gaps in Star Citizen lore that haven't been rectified, especially as it pertains to a human's desire to assert independence from a meddling bureaucracy, which is a persistent feature of human history. I can find Star Citizen lore regarding conflicts with pirates, political rivalries, power struggles, and factional conflicts, but nothing like the scale of Independents fighting the Alliance in Firefly. If Star Citizen lore wants to reflect the reality of human beings *_being human_* there needs to be something like the _Unification War_ in Firefly. Additionally, there's some gaps in Firefly lore that don't explain how humanity went from Earth to the quintuple star system, which the Firefly series takes place. That gap could be explained by jump gates retconned into Firefly lore. It just seems to me that CIG could team up with Disney (The current owners of the Firefly series) to retcon Firefly and Star Citizen lore, which could bring about more than just a video game, but tv series and movies too. To start, they'd most likely have to retcon the United Planets of Earth (the precursor of the UEE) into the Union of Allied Planets (the Alliance). It would be easier to change the game than the series, because the game hasn't officially been released. Then they could retcon the reason why people don't use of jump points in the Firefly verse was because the Alliance keeps tight control over the existence of jump points in that particular region of space, with the vast majority of people living the quintuple star system we see in Firefly not even really knowing how they got there in the first place. That could easily be retconned in with just some new shows based in the Firefly _Verse._ Place the Unification War (2511) between the Independents and the Alliance from Firefly as part of the history prior to the First Human-Tevarin War (2544-2546) from Star Citizen, which will help explain the real-politic that explains how the UEE could have come about in the first place. The Union of Allied Planets becoming the United Empire of Earth is a more natural progression than the United Planets of Earth becoming the UEE in Star Citizen lore. The First Human-Tevarin War could be the backdrop for how those living that quintuple star system from Firefly found out the Alliance had been hiding their jump point. In telling that story, they could make more concrete the political reality where one person, Ivar Messer, could seize control of the Alliance, as a result of the Human-Tevarin War, and turn it into the United Empire of Earth. I want to see Star Citizen to become the biggest video game ever, that ultimately transcends the computer screen onto the movie and tv screen... and melding the two lores seems a good way toward that.

I think of CR's Wing Commander movie when the Kilrathi jumped in and the fleet was waiting for them. To everyone that's surprised that things are suddenly moving... don't be. I've seen everything that's happened with SC before in other places I've worked. Smaller scale, but it works in the exact same way. I know it feels like nothing has been fixed or worked on since 2018/2019. I can guarantee that all the problems we've been experiencing? They've been working on them every single last day for the last 4-5 years. I'll go as far as to say that they've likely all been *fixed* and have been so for many of those years and that a lot of dev time has been spent on features and tech we've not seen. You might wonder why? I think it should be obvious - server meshing was the "Backend Goal" for 4.x and the 3.X series just never had that backend (and still doesn't). Everything is designed for the new backend which has a whole bunch of new interfaces and new systems. And backporting these features to the old system would be horribly painful. But they've likely done so to get feedback for a lot of the things we've been playing with in the 3.X branch. What 3.23 is going to be is a pre-release for 4.0. As much as it sucks, sometimes one piece of tech that nobody outside the devs will ever see holds the whole train up. And when that happens - nobody stops working on things. In fact, I'll wager that people were working much, much harder during the last 5 years because of it. Because they not only had to make sure things worked for the new target environment... but to get debug feedback they had to backport stuff to the old environment - which would have caused a bunch of false-bugs to pop up because the old environment really just can't handle it. I've seen this so many times in network software development/deployments. Its painful. Until its fixed when it seems like the dam just opens up and everything rushes out into the world. Just remember - they didn't hold up all this time because they were twiddling thumbs. Your bugs probably *are* fixed... for the 4.0 target. There's going to be *new* bugs that might be a thousand times worse than the old bugs. But I think CIG knows that if they have a viable backend now they need to get to shipping it asap. I think we're going to see that 12 years of work *has* been done on things. And its going to be the BDSSE.
