SunnyMadoka Im so sorry for you loss. When my son was 10 years old, we found a white winged dove. We grabbed him before he became cat chow. We then hand fed him for a few months until he ate by himself. We tried to release him but he flew back in the house. One day I was cleaning and I left the door open. He walked outside and flew away. I called him for hours and days. Im thankful for the opportunity and I cherish the memories. I cried like a baby, unfortunately all things come to an end. Til this day my son remembers him. Its been 5 years. We will never forget him. His name is Birdie. Be well Sunny.

I love that you are thinking about going to Canada... Can't wait to hear where you are planning on going. I am in the process of getting a large mobility dog, and some sites say that "bracing" has been taken off the list of services a dog can provide bc it is too hard on them? I'm hoping I can find a dog who can perform similar stability functions to what Ollie does.

I recommend going to Nova Scotia. That is where my Mom is from. It's so beautiful and the people are so friendly. If you ever read the Anne of Green Gables books you can go to Prince Edward Island and go to the Green Gables house. You can go to Peggys Cove and see the ocean. I love sitting there watching and listening to the waves crash.

Nancy Stewart there is a tv show on netflix of this book! I am watchig it since Friday, today I'll end it. This is amazing! The places are beautiful, Anne is so funny! If Nova Scotia is 1% as beautiful as the places they film, this is TOTALLY worth it to go there, enjoy life, get inspired (after watching only one episode I "unretired" (does this word exist?) my watercolor kit lol)...

This is kinda weird but I think it's really funny but also kinda cute that when Mary is in a coughing fit the two of them kinda treat it like normal, like as Mary coughs she hands the phone over to peter and he keeps going. Or like other times when Mary is talking to the camera and she starts coughing peter takes the camera and goes on. It's so cute idk why LOL

As a person that is starting retirement transition, I found my SD who is 8 was just starting to struggle getting in the car. Took her to the vet and had her hips checked. She is just showing signs of arthritis in her hips. Even though she still has energy and loves to work however I know I shouldn't push her. The vet said she was okay to go short distances for a few years at most depending on how rapid the arthritis takes over. Seeing as it will probably take about 2 years for a dog to be fully trained, I have started to slow down with her. If I know I will be going to a place and walking a far distance I don't bring her(but I bring a friend or family instead). Our search for a puppy is underway. So by the time my SD is ready to completely retire the pup will be fully trained to take her place. So don't forget that grace period of about 2 years for training! It would be bad for anyone to be stuck with a dog too old to work and a little puppy not ready to be relied on for alerts yet.

We have had an interesting experience with 'retiring' my daughters service dog. We were given the option to let him stay with us as a pet or to have him go back to the agency and be re-homed. Of course we said we wanted him to stay in his home, after all his years of service we could hardly see ourselves just kicking him out the door. We went through the process of slowly lessening his working day and giving him less and less responsibilities and he did very well even after a new service dog came to work with my daughter. He definitely had slowed down in the last year and had some issue with arthritis and actually acted like he was a bit relieved to 'retire'. His arthritis seemed to be progressing faster than we and our vet through was good and so we took him to see a specialist who actually got him into a veterinary trail for a medication for his type of joint disease. He did amazingly well on the medication and in about 6 months, along with physical therapy was back to the activity level we had not seen in almost 2 years. At that point he suddenly decided he wanted his job back again. Although with retirement and that we essentially 'adopted him' he really was not under the agency's program anymore we consulted with them because we did not want to cause him any issues and we did not want him also interfering with the new partner. He would stand at the door waiting to be vested and while he never gave the new dog and issue he was pretty adamant that he was going to do a job whether we wanted him too or not. So he still goes along as a 'second helper' wearing a vest at least on walks and car outings and things so he still feels like he has a job. I felt bad thinking maybe we had done the wrong thing not having him re-home in a environment where he would not be thinking about working now that he felt better but after talking to a animals psychologist at the University here we learned that no, we actually did the right thing to not have him lose a home as well as a job, and some dogs just are not ready to retire even when they really can't do the job well anymore but there is nothing wrong with letting him do those parts he feels up to doing and enjoys. While he likes wearing his vest and being out and about and pays close attention to my daughter, he does enjoy sleeping all night long in my room now instead of hers and not having to respond to a monitor alarm. Actually if the alarm goes off and my daughters service dog comes to wake us up he end up giving her a dirty look for disturbing him, so obviously that part of retirement he is ready for!

First of all the camera didn’t shake, or maybe I didn’t realize it 😁 there were definitely some unusual questions, but still really interesting. I‘m going to get my puppy in a couple of weeks, it’s my third dog, but my first one to be trained as an assistance and epileptic alert dog. I’m so excited for getting back some of my freedom and also just for having a dog again, because my last dog sadly died in January this year. My husband is also very excited for all the new things ahead of us. My puppy is a Labradoodle, and hopefully will be as good as Ollie in his job. I know that you got Ollie trained away from you, but we are glad that our trainer is just a 20 min drive away from us, so we don’t have to leave the puppy at our trainer. I’m really happy about that, I can still remember, how emotional it was, when you got Ollie back at the airport❤️ What type of harness did you got for Ollie when he was still little and growing? And where did you buy the leather harness, Ollie is wearing in this video, I just love that one. Sending you a lot of spoonies🐶 Katy
