Hi all, this time I take a look at the Aiwa HS-G-35 MKii - a mid-range personal stereo from 1987. This one would have been in immaculate condition were it not for the corrosion which has eaten away at the paintwork and potentially other areas. Corrosion can ruin the best-preserved electronics if they are stored with batteries still in place, so please be careful! This unit is partiularly 1980s as it has a graphic equaliser built in. This is a compact yet heavy player and it oozes quality (and a bit of corrosion)

This series ( G35MK2 / G36 / T06 / T06MK2 and so on .. ) is a bargain if someone wants a "walkman" today. The tape mechanism is sturdy, electronics without smd and the overall build quality at a high level. I have nearly all of them - including color variants - and they are usually sold cheap. Once i have them open i change all the capacitors. I check all old caps and in only two of 15 machines some were out of spec. On the other hand all SMD capacitors in the HS-PX and the older "high end" lines ( HS-P/G/J 07/08/09 ) usually went bad after decades ... and sometimes even corroded underlying traces on the boards. Long story short - i love these player and can recommend them anytime to have fun with some tapes. As always : just my 2 cents.

me too, it still has some 80's style but it's definitely starting to look more 90's. But thankfully it's not black/plain, like the majority of 90's personal stereos :)

Hi could help me on my Aiwa HS-G34 it has the same feature like yours. the speed is so fast when playing tapes. I already tried different sizes of belts and adjusted the bias it still fast what do you think is wrong with it.

Did you ever get around to making a scan of the label for the controls? Mine is missing and I'm struggling to find a copy anywhere... :(

Drop some IPA into the volume wheel and wiggle it around a few times. Or spray some contact cleaner

My father has one of these and when he brought it out the other day I instantly fell in love! I love the mechanical buttons, especially the auto-reverse buttons that switch on their own (I don't know if this is standard for portable cassette players, I'm very new to this) Sadly after trying it out it seems that the audio connection is dodgy, only producing sound in one ear, and after my brother tried to fix it by opening it up, the auto-reverse function now seems to be malfunctioning as well. I'm very heartbroken about this and quite angry with my brother for opening it up even when he doesn't have any experience in the field. I want to take it to a repair shop soon, hopefully I can find someone in the area that can fix it up. I really liked your video btw! Congrats on managing to get your hands on such a beautiful one! I do have a question though, I was wondering this when my bro was opening my fathers player, what's the function of that copper(?) sheet on top of the circuit-board?

Hi, sorry to hear that, the copper is likely grounding to reduce external noise affecting playback. If you lose one audio channel, it's always worth reflowing the solder as continually inserting and removing the headphone jack takes its toll and you could have a hairline break in the solder. You can get a soldering iron kit and flux for around £20 if you want to tackle it :)

Wich diameters do you put for the new belt ?
@monkeysyndicate
@monkeysyndicate 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I just use trial and error with various belts, I do have a tape to measure wow and flutter with a constant tone recorded on it. I'm still learning more about belts and I think sometimes I go too tight, this can actually make wow and flutter worse. The belt should be tight enough to drive the mechanism with no slack, bit you shouldn't need to stretch the belt much to get it in place.
