Servicing this Beautiful Classic Jones Sewing Machine

My customer brought in this lovely Jones sewing machine because it was no longer sewing.
In this video I find the problem and service the machine.

No there is no check spring on the tension. It is a manual release so you should press it when threading. It does seem noisy and that is the same with the Jones CS I am cleaning up. A bit of play in the needle bar.

Hi Gary, thanks a lot for this video, who helped me a lot while servicing a Phoenix KI-10 found laying on the road. She works perfectly now! One question: did you know where in can find those special needles? The one on the machines is stamped with 12-80, and has the grooves like yours in the video. Thanks!

Very interesting. I would love to see how the bobbin winder works, is there a bobbin inside of the shuttle? It must have been tricky sewing with one hand.

So it seems there were multiple sewing machine manufacturers in Britain. Were the non-Singer companies consolidated as the American ones were by National Sewing Machine?

I have worked on a few of these machines for friends Jones CS 1896? a very old style odd bobbin winder the path of the thread over a bar in front of the bobbin it is very odd. Roses decals Jones VS 1916? there is no back stitch Jones CS 1925? this has reverse stitch - the stitch length leaver casting allows further travel to the top of the machine to back stitch Interesting these machine do not have a top tension take up spring all the best
