In this video we create a simple serving tray using Locust wood for the sides and give the tray a bit of a WOW factor by adding Holly Inlay strips to the bottom and creating box joint sides for strength and beauty.
The perfect woodworking project to show off your woodworking expertise.

That inlay is a nice touch, gives it a classy look. Good project (with a long 'o' sound for you) to do. Thanks.

Nice one Colin. The combination of the box joints, wood selection and inlay makes this a great little project I will build myself. Thank you. Derek

I like the jig you have for cutting thin strips. Very ingenious.

Thanks for commenting, yes that is a handy jig and I use quite a bit. I can't take credit for the concept though, but I did modify it to work better for me, and it works very well for thin strips,

I love your videos, they really inspire me to build stuff. I made a couple of trays but nothing like this. Just beautiful. Greetings from Portugal

Hi Colin, great video thank you. When you were gluing the inlay you were worried about the squeeze out. I used the blue decorators tape along the edges and just removed when dry!

Very nice tray and the breakdown instructions for each step makes me want to try. I would try it with mitered corners and routed all around since I don't have a box jig. Thank you again for the project idea, I'm sure " we " here can use one too :-)

Very good point, yes, like a lot of things in woodworking there are many different ways to do things. Hopefully your "we" will give you a bit more notice lol. Thanks for commenting and sharing an important point. Colin

Hi, Colin. Love this project. What is the thickness of the plywood base which contains the inlay?
@knecht105
@knecht105 9 жыл бұрын
Rob I Gosh ... of course the tray has gone to a new home now so I can't check it, but I believe it was around 3/16" ... I'm sure it was not as thick as 1/4" Hope that helps Rob
@robira1313
@robira1313 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks Colin. With only a 3/16 thickness, was it hard to find room for the depth of the inlays? Should the depth of the grooves be about 1/2 the thickness? Thanks again.
@knecht105
@knecht105 9 жыл бұрын
Rob I Yes, as I recall it was. The inlay pieces I cut were really, really thin and I had to make sure they were cut from straight grain wood or they would break apart too easy. As I recall, I think I just cut a wee bit below the first layer of plywood, and even then the inlay pieces were still a bit proud so had to hand sand them (gently) to get them down to the proper depth. If I were to do this again, I would use a slightly thicker wood, in the end I don't think it will make a big difference in the weight of the tray, but will be much easier to do the inlay.

when you say *_"I'm just gonna saw that off camera..."_* for us it's like to watch a porn and hear the actors say *_"we're just gonna do it off camera and we'll be right back"_* =)

Ha Ha Ha ... wow, that is quite the description, thanks for sharing that. I guess we just can't win. When we do too much, people tell us that it is too slow and click away, when we don't do enough people tell us that too. Oh well, hopefully some day we'll get it right, in the mean time we will keep working on it. Thanks for the amusing note ... :)
