This classic Sesame Street film was posted but it was in between a "Siskel & Ebert" spoof of Oscar and Telly discussing movies. This is shown from an early S.S. episode the way it was intended to be seen.

It's amazing the impact that Sesame Street has on people's lives in big and small ways. I remember this video so distinctly and loved the sound of the steel drum. I finally bought myself, just yesterday, a tongue steel drum (beginner level) and this video is the reason for my life-long love. Thank you for sharing this. This is the true beauty of KZbin.

Wow! I'm from Trinidad & Tobago, the Caribbean country where the steel drum originated. Saw this clip on Sesame Street as a child and felt so proud that they featured our steel drum on an American show. Trinidad had steel drums even before oil (petroleum) production began in our country. This video shows the making of a high-pitched drum (tenor) by hand, but the entire barrel is used to make a bass drum.The technology for making steel drums has come a very long way. There are factories now.

I miss these 'slice of life' segments. When I watched as a little kid in the 70's, children were always doing something constructive. Picking vegetables at a friend's garden, helping Mama shop for soup ingredients or Dad cook at his restaurant, and recycling discarded barrels into drums! They looked up to the adults that looked out for them, and the world around them filled the kids with wonder.

I loved the grittiness of the times back then. That area is right near 87 north the major deegan expressway (where they found the barrel) and obviously it used to be a lot full of weeds. You can see the Harlem River underneath the bridge. It’s all built up now, tall buildings, corporations moved in.

The locomotive has the Penn Central logo. The PC was in business from 1968 to 1976, but it could be from a little bit after that, since they probably didn't repaint everything immediately. It looks like the railroad bridge from Manhattan to the South Bronx, used by today's Metro North trains.

Old-School Sesame Street had that urban grit that you just don't see nowadays: Kids hanging out in a vacant lot, nabbing a discarded oil drum! And look how close they get to the hacksaw and the blowtorch-There was always an element of danger when I used to watch the show as a kid that kept me coming back for more (that and the fuzzy blue monsters).

Haven't seen this in 30 years. Fantastic. My kids watch Sesame Street now. It's still a really good show. They still have wonderful little bits like this, but most are shot on digital video now and don't have that wonderful film quality to them.

My kids were preschool age right around the time Sesame Street started shifting its focus towards Elmo and the “choppier” segments of today. My parents got them the “Old School Sesame Street” DVDs to watch, and that started them enjoying the classics. When they were a little older, I stumbled across the classic Sesame Street clips on KZbin, and the next thing you knew the kids and I both had proceeded to kill an entire weekend watching them! Both of them had the same opinion of today’s Sesame Street afterwards: “The new Sesame Street show is crap compared to this!” I couldn’t agree more!

I have this in a 1987 episode. I think of all the Sesame Street films I've ever seen (or can remember), this one feels the most "removed". There's absolutely nothing in this piece that even vaguely suggests that we're on Sesame Street. It's distant, no-nonsense, and blunt--almost cold. In the epiosde I have, it's a jarring contrast when this film ends and we suddenly jump to a Telly Monster clip. XD

People breathe in rhythm, too." The horse's trotting then segues into one of the catchiest tunes you'll ever hear played on steel drums. That tune is actually the one I was looking for when I was searching "Sesame Street Caribbean steel drums." For some reason I was associating THAT tune with THIS video, but then again, I hadn't seen either of them in decades. To this day, the tune from that "rhythm" video is one of the first tunes that comes to mind when I think of Caribbean steel drum music.

I was thinking something like that as I would have been around 4 at the time. As a kid growing up in rural Australia, Sesame Street was the only way I saw people of colour. This particular episode has always stuck in my head. I remember being fascinated by the people, the landscape and the sound of the steel drums. Good memories.
