Sesame Street - Where the Garbage Goes - Peter Schickele (1970)

From 1970, did ya ever wonder "Where the Garbage Goes"? Yeah, me neither, but here's the '70s answer anyway! ;-) FULL version of this live-action film of where all the trash goes. Awesome music by Peter Schickele (aka P.D.Q. Bach), who also scored three riddle films ("Tomato", "Skin", and "Tire", linked below along with the edited version of this). Later airings not only cut the film for time, but removed the narration, took out the ending with kids climbing the tree ("A few years after it's covered, it turns into good land where people can live."), and changed the song, too, sheesh! Lyrics and changes below.
Similar problem with the "Tire" film. The one linked is definitely from Joe Raposo's series, "Look At This", used for many close-up films (same as Peter's films), so maybe they remade the original? Only tire film I could currently find.

I can't believe that Peter Shickele (aka PDQ Bach) wrote this song. At the same time I'm not surprised he did it. I watched this program in my youth.

Peter Schickele made other contributions to the show in its debut season, such as the underscore for the films that would later be rescored by Joe Raposo in the "Look a Little Closer" series. What I marveled to learn was that Schickele and Robert Dennis (a more prolific contributor to the show) had collaborated in a band called The Open Window. P.S.: I'm listening to episodes of Schickele Mix as I'm writing.

A few years after it's covered, it's turned into good land, where people can live! Ha! It's turned into the flea market in Englishtown NJ, where you're walking along, minding your own business, shopping for bargains, and you trip over a couch or tires that had been buried, but have filled with methane and are now working their way out of the ground!

Absolutely it did. It was horrifying. I clearly remember thinking the world was insane if adults thought dumping our trash in the ocean was a good idea. Some parents must have complained and they cut another version. Notice the kid says the barge goes down, not up, the river. Next the kid says out to the sea -- where he originally said "far from the city" -- and they show it all being dumped! I still shudder at this memory.

I guess they shortened it because in this case the garbage wasn't going to the country, it was going to Staten Island. And Fresh Kills wouldn't become park land for at least 30 years after this film was made.

+ariel films inc It's not new because I remember that "baaa, bup-ba-dup-ba-da". That always grossed me out; I felt they were making lite of the humungous mess. Yes I also remember that "goodbye garbage" song. Little did us naïve kids know that they were going to dump that trash into the sea! I'm sure glad they've come up with better ways to deal with excess garbage since then. Rats can't be too happy about it though, LOL
