Classic Sesame Street film - Rhythm of the World (full version)

From Season 1 (1969). This film, in its more familiar abridged version, has been known under the title "Steel Drum Rhythm", where steelpan player Victor Brady talks about the rhythmic aspect of nature and human activities, and plays some happy tunes to the sounds of sawing, pile driving, and a horse pulling a carriage. What a beautiful surprise to find a fuller version of this film that brought delight to my childhood.

The man playing the steel drum in this video is Victor Brady. At that time (1969) he was a popular musician based in New York City (hailing from St. Croix, USVI) and would continue to be a popular draw from the 1960s to the late 1980s. He gained early fame in Greenwich Village’s Cafe Wha? where he headlined above other up-and-comers like Bob Dylan, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, Jimi Hendrix, and many others whom he helped to get their shot on a big stage.
Brady is a major proponent of the steel drum art form, having toured Europe, Asia, Africa, the U.S. and the Caribbean for many years, lecturing at the Smithsonian, performing and advocating for the exposure and recognition of this ingenious instrument from Trinidad. He would eventually reappear on Sesame Street around 1980 in another feature segment, demonstrating a much more evolved version of this instrument; an evolution to which he contributed substantially. Unfortunately, much of his important story has not (yet) been spotlighted in the internet era, but tidbits of information can be found on him via Google search and newspaper archives.
This particular clip, which was all filmed in New York (Central Park, Coney Island/Long Island), was a significant achievement in 1969, as it was a very early attempt by Sesame Street in its first season to not only feature a black man with natural hair during a pivotal time in the US, but also to highlight Caribbean culture on a broad and educational stage.

This was great! I was whistling this tune this afternoon and here I am looking it up. I had no idea there was a an unedited version. Victor Brady is a great steelpan player and it's a shame I can hardly find anything about him online.

I love the song in this. They are the original full video on sesame Street Way long ago. I heard it a couple times after that but it had been cut down to just simply the music portion and not quite following all of the rhythm aspect. I'm so glad somebody brought this to KZbin. The only are the fully once and I caught it and I haven't seen it since (obviously) and I'm so glad that ctw did not lose the footage

Bless you for uploading this! This is a treasure! Years ago when a video featuring the truncated version allowed comments, I left one asking if anyone remembered that it used to be longer with footage of pile drivers and hammers beating in time with the music. I was told rather condescendingly that I was confusing it with another SS video that was exclusively about pile drivers. But I knew what I knew... "So remember, no matter where you are, or where you go, you're in the rhythm section."

1:22--Wow; this has to be one of the catchiest tunes you could ever hear on steel drums. To this day, it is one of the first tunes that comes to mind when I think of Caribbean steel drum music. What a treat to find a longer version of this classic film!

I've heard of there being a longer version of this film, but it seemed to be more of a memory that couldn't quite be counted on to some fans, although a couple people remembered the carriage-ride part being longer, and now I can see they were right. The shorter version played on the show, well into the '80s, and was always a welcoming and tranquil little piece. For something from the first season, unlike a lot of the short films from the same period, this one doesn't seem dated at all.

I am pretty sure that if a scientist were to untangle my DNA they would find this very steel drum melody forever encoded there somehow from seeing and hearing this on Sesame Street when I was very young! Thanks for providing this wonderful video to now go with my vivid musical memory. 🙌

THANK YOU for posting this, Monsterpiece Theatre! I remember being 4 or 5 years old and watching Sesame Street. Not sure if we watched it from its premiere or if my Mom may have come onboard to let us watch it later. Like so many have said, I don't remember seeing the longer version ever. Never saw the pile driver, or the hammering. I love horses so the horse bit, and the music that went with that bit, are indelibly etched in my brain forever. As others have said, this was one of the ones that didn't need to be edited, BUT I must give props to the editors, because they did a good job. I could however listen to that horse's "drumming" with such a nice metronome beat forever. Thank you again!

Sometimes I wonder if I ever did see this version. I know Ives seen all that’s in the shorter version but I’ve seen it a few times over the past 14 years or so and wouldn’t know for sure if I ever saw the long version. I suppose it depends on how often it aired in the 70s compared to the short version. I’m any case: thanks for positing!

I'm heard many of these 1st season films were cut back because they felt or discovered they were too long for the audience. Case in point, the film on sounds with kids talking about them. Think all of the city sounds, including the vehicle pieces were eliminated. However, I can't see why this one was edited because it wasn't that long and the info in this one was useful. Also I try not to ask about other uploaded but why was the Through segment with Kermit & Cookie removed?

I never knew I was watching a truncated version all those years. Nice to see the original uncut of this. Now of any of you want to see another rare longer version of a familiar video, watch season 1 episode 3, it contains an approximately six minute short film, featuring a narrator talking about beginnings, like saying a rooster was was a baby chick, and how kids love to climb trees, and that the birth of a baby, is the most wonderful beginning of all. You guesses it, it was later cut down to just under two minutes and Joe Roposo's song A Little Bit(At The Beginning) was added to it Here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKioYYh9a7uDhsU It appears about 20 minutes in.

It concerns a young African American boy who's so lazy that he imagines his clothes putting themselves on him. He quickly learns it's best to put the clothes on himself. BUT.. as soon as he's full dressed , he goes outside to play his bed makes itself up! Usually this was followed by an unrelated Joe Raposo song Little Weaver Bird.

Honestly, it could be any beach in any country, but my guess is that it was set (and probably filmed) in one of the New York area's beaches.
