David - years ago you told a story, on one of your Twitch streams, of knowing a Japanese paper maker. Would you ever consider telling that story again for your KZbin channel? It was an awesome story and I loved hearing you tell it. I’d love to hear it again.
@SaiChooMusic2 жыл бұрын
He should do the story about the block maker/planer as well
@diloranmingus2 жыл бұрын
I don’t remember that one off the top of my head, but I agree! I want to hear any of the stories that he’s willing to tell and archive here. I think more access to stories like those is a wonderful thing. Especially in today’s world where so much story telling is a fast, flash in the pan type type of content on reels and shorts. Not to say I think those are all bad per se, but I love that David’s videos are longer videos. It feels like bringing the old and new together. Yes, it’s a KZbin video archived on the internet. But it feels like sitting down with a person who has lived far longer than me in a life far different than mine. Just a chance to slow down, learn, and experience.

I just realized that this channel technically falls under the Lost Media genre (which I like) and Dave and his Mokuhankan team are taking their steps further by recovering, preserving, and reviving precious lost art so they can be appreciated by today's and tomorrow's generation. That being said, I'm absolutely looking forward to this project!
@mokuhanga1 Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it was ever "lost" 😄😂 The old publishers are today publishing contemporary woodblock prints of very high quality e.g. Adachi or Watanabe. Hundreds, if not thousands, of artists are today self carving and printing, many at higher quality than 100 years ago e.g. Tachihara Inuki (ukiyo-e) or Miyamoto Shufu (shin-hanga) or Paul Binnie (contemporary).

As a student of Japanese art and a professional carver, I appreciate your knowledge and explantion of various aspects of woodblock prints. I obtained an excellent volume comprised of drawings by Hiroshige of everyday life some of which were projected to be part of a print. I share your love of this wonderful discipline. Your passion and love for the art will shine forth in any project you undertake. Best wishes from Virginia, Cork Camden

We are watching a legend carving his way into art history. He will be up there, among great ugiyoe craver and printer, as a modern revisionist who brought so much joy to the world. Gentlemen, ladies, subscribe to him as if u are given a chance to subscribe to Hokusai.

There's nothing better than seeing someone, who is truly wholeheartly passionate about something, sharing info about it. I watch some of your videos fro time to time and it fills me with joy. In a world so full of "everything" and that moves so fast with technology, news, apps, etc... and where people tend to be a little lost about what they like becouse they have too many options out there, it certainly is nice to see someone so passionate, well versed and meticulous about what they love, specialy something so artistic. Thank you so much for sharing, for taking the time to set up the camera and record and for letting us know and learn about a technic that may be difficult to know about living in countries other than Japan. (Excuse my English, I'm a Spanish speaker) Blessings and lots of love from Argentina!

Firstly, it's wonderful to see you happy and well Dave. I think this project is so interesting, you've always represented a bridge from the past to the future. You're a programmer, but found woodblock carving. You're using modern technology in your process, but documenting techniques that haven't changed for hundreds of years. It's really fascinating! I wish you and the whole team nothing but the absolute best as always ❤❤❤

Dave, regarding the audio....I think it's just the echo of the room. Perhaps putting the mike higher up on your shirt will help. In your Twitch stream, you are looking down a lot and the mike picks up your voice perfectly. I think in this case, it just needs to be higher. Otherwise, there's nothing terrible....we just love your voice so much that it's the only thing we want to hear!

I WANT one of Mokuhankan's prints. The next and first time I'll be visiting Japan I'll buy some and hopefully see you! In the meanwhile (beeing a student with no money for luxorious prints) I'll try to make my own prints instead. I have carved my first ever woodblock print on some plywood! The block is all bendy and not suitable, but it actually worked and i have a print of the keyblock!! Next is color 😁 Thank you and your community for beeing awesome and sharing your process and visions! 🥰
