RIP LYLE MAYS... you were an American original just like Pat....words cannot express how I felt when it really hit me that I'd never hear Lyle play live again. But I take comfort in the amazing body of recordings left for us to cherish for the rest of OUR lives. Rest in peace, hope you're flying high -- like you always did here on Earth! 💙

@@renlessardHuge. I saw Dave Brubeck and his band, with his son on drums, small kit. Maybe 65 years old at the original taste of Chicago, on the lake front in old Navy Pier. Top 5 show of my life. When the drum solo kicked off, the lake front fire works went off. Like it was planned. Spoke to Dave 20 years later at a gig. 80 plus at this time. Said he will never forget that show himself. P.s. opening for him, Henny Youngman!

Back in 1977 when I was 16, I experienced this original lineup and tour in East Lansing, Michigan in the tiny Erickson Kiva setting. They opened with this song and my mind was musically blown forever. I can't express the emotions and movement and colors that I see and feel when this song plays but I know that they exist. This is one of the most powerful pieces of music ever conceived and executed in my opinion. I hadn't listened to this in over 30 years and something poked my conscience about it tonight. I was instantly transported back to that night 43 years ago and I felt the same feelings again... that's the power of this music.

PMG’s songs are always transcendent and timeless. I’ve been listening to Metheny since I heard the white album back in 1977. His music has not just accompanied my life but has been such a part of my life that it can reasonably said has been my life in a profound way. His music has been with me white water rafting the rio bio bio in Patagonia back when it was mostly class IV and V , it has been with me skiing untracked powder in the Rocky Mtns, it has been with me rock climbing, trekking the Himalayas and sky diving It always evoked the spaciousness , joy and the transcendent found in nature as well as beauty too deep for tears . God bless Pat Metheny. A lot of us would not have made it without him.

That Gibson hollow body and Pat Metheny made one hell of a great career together, not to forget the help of the toothbrush by any means. That is the toothbrush guitar in the bridge, sort of slantwise? How come Lyle Mays fits so well with Metheny? I think it's fantastic. A match made in heaven of sorts. You can tell that they think a lot alike when it comes to music. I bet they fight endlessly off stage. I'm just kidding, of course. It's my bands that fight endlessly, but they're not my bands so I just walk off. Or laugh at them. It's hard to imagine any vibes but ecstatic ones from any of these guys. That's what brought me to Metheny. Some guy came over with some records at college and we listened for awhile and said "wow, listen to that. That guy must be ethically pure to exude such vibes. " Then he looked at us and kind of looked embarrassed and said there's no way to make that assessment. Maybe, but it was already out there and I knew what he meant and agreed. There's a purity about Metheny and Mays. Their music usually cleanses and provides a safe, interesting, friendly, trustworthy, and powerful friend who will drive anywhere with you and never complain. My car only had a CD player. So I listened to Secret Story for 3 years straight. I kid you not. There was a song I began skipping through a part of, but for 76 minutes of glory, only a part of one song to fast forward through? That is a CD worth every penny, as are all his CDs and records. No tolerance for silence is an album that I set on the very top, alone. I wasn't worthy of it. Can anyone relate to that behavior.

This record changed my appreciation for music. 1978 wasn't really a watershed year for rock, jazz, or fusion. The Group album came out the same year as the first Van Halen album - which was, along with Bee Gees tunes and the Grease movie soundtrack representitive of the weak offerings that music lovers had to choose from. Most pop, rock, and jazz/fusion artists were releasing their third albums, or Greatest Hits collections. Most were phoning them in, as if they were contractual obligations. Punk was just beginning it's sempiternal infancy .. . Danny Gottlieb and Mark Egan played on the original studio Group album, as well as the next record, American Garage. Metheny and Mays brought the ideas but all four of them ceated the distinctive, all-inclusive PMG sound. When Gotlieb left, Paul Wertico built on Gotlieb's interpretations while creating a whole new level of magic (like on the title track of First Circle, where Wertico plays only his cymbals, never striking a drum head during the entire composition), When Rodby replaced Mark Egan the Group gained an accomplished film and audio producer as well as a superb musician. But neither one of them were game-changers at the time. Of course, the most profound paradigm change and lasting impact on the PMG sound was the addition of Pedro Aznar! Which is why I consider First Cicle to be Phase Dance - perfected.

@SynclavierMPDR Buena Noche, Profe,D!

Incredible Song. It makes You dream while Truly Conscious. Regretfully I only saw Pat once at the Mellon Jazz festival with Herbie, Dave Holland and Jack. It Was Fantastic!

I had the honor to go to 6 of PMG concerts at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater, FL. They played all their songs as good or better than recorded. They were absolutely amazing. Their music took me to another place and still does. Very sad that Lyle Mays passed recently. RIP.

Without Lyles keyboards this wouldn't be so excellent. Surprised pats arms are not extremely muscular due to his efforts.

There aren't words to describe the awesomeness and brilliance of these people and their music. I've been a fan for so long, then see this and my jaw is on the floor once again.
