The most interesting part of Sesshomaru's character development is that he doesn't so much warm up to his friends as he does open himself up to playing along with their goofier activities. Compare how he shuts Rin down when she was screaming over his harvesting Goshinki versus him just chilling out and playing lifeguard while Rin and Jaken goof around fishing in the river. He never stops being himself, he lets others be themselves around him.

Nah...not until he accepted his father's death at least. If Kagome hadn't distracted him by pulling out tessaiga, he would have killed Inuyasha in that episode where they were inside their father's corpse. And then we would have a very short series. I wouldn't say he loves him. More...tolerates/kinda likes by the end since he started giving Inuyasha warnings of when to not pick a fight (he said he wasn't feeling magnanimous in one episode) and he killed the guy who was probably trying to rape Kagome (the poison master from the Band of Seven). I doubt he cares about Kagome much but he seems to come to tolerate Inuyasha and by extension his friend group.

In the original language he's smiling because he's musing about the joke his father played on him since he gave the hanyou a weapon that can become more and more powerful over time and gave the pure blooded yokai prince a sword that cannot kill. Thats the running theme, he feels his father shunned him over IY when he gave him Tensaiga. It was only over time that he realized how powerful Tensaiga could become if he just understood what his father was trying to pass on too him.

He got a 'funny' way of showing it. Didn't he gouge out one eye (manga) and nearly disembowel him? Or at least put a hole through his torso. Also, if he cared about his brother's well being, he would have made Inuyasha his ward similar to Rin, when Izayoi died when Inuyasha was a kid. I think he spent ~ 200 years blaming Inuyasha for their father's death (in the movie with the demonic stalker, he says that Inuyasha and Izayoi were responsible for his [their father's] death).

He EVENTUALLY came to care for Inuyasha, but naah. The only reason Sesshomaru didn't kill him is because he either needed Inuyasha alive or Inuyasha was able to fend him off until he had to retreat for one reason or another.

I don't think so.I am 100% certain he doesn't like him,his father and all and he being an elitist,also most of the reason why he is alive in the first place is because he isn't really hellbend on killing him ,you know? If you remember the only reason why inuyasha fought sesshy in the tomb because he can survive the battle if he loses but kagome will die so he needed to fight 100%.. I am fairly certain Inuyasha isn't his favorite character but c'mon he wouldn't just kill his brother off like that ,he never was that heartless. That doesn't mean he can't beat the shit out of him until he almost dies.. Also his attitude is pissing him off he's much weaker than him yet speak like a punk to him to add salt on the injury created by his father.He is just an elder brother trying to teach inuyasha his place.I don't know the manga but in the tomb he himself statet that he wanted to test him to see if he really can wield the sword,also that episode's original title is sesshy vs tetsaiga . So sesshy doesn't go from wanting to kill his brother to loving him.He goes from really really disliking him and wouldn't care if he droped dead or not to okay it's a shame you had to die kind of character.It's a huge change but again if it was like complete hate or some shit he would have come off as a villain which to me idk he never once seemed like one....

Brianca Provoid You really think Sesshomaru was more concerned about Kagura and Jaken than Rin? Regardless of the scene in question, evidence does not support that, lol. If Kagura hadn't been there he still would have gone to save Rin, it's not like he would have just let her drown. He always protects her when necessary, and he's much more gentle and measured with her. While Sesshomaru has saved others besides Rin, he doesn't hold back his personality and is still brazen and dickish when helping and being a good guy. His attitude toward Rin is the exception.

Brianca Provoid I know he wanted to save them all, I think it made sense for him to do so. But I commented because it seemed as if you were saying he was more worried about Kagura than Rin. I think he probably would have saved anyone else in Kagura's place in that circumstance too - unless he really despised them or he figured they could take care of themselves. He did feel sorry for Kagura, and I imagine he liked her fierceness. As far as his attitude towards Rin goes, that's just because Sesshomaru is Sesshomaru. I think it's obvious he cares for Rin more than anyone else (I don't ship them btw, that's gross), but he'd never express it very openly because that's just the way he is. If that weren't the case, his Tenseiga wouldn't have been granted more power. Sesshomaru has developed feelings and empathy more than ever before, but displaying them like every one else would be totally out-of-character for him. For Sesshomaru, the tenderness he's displayed towards Rin is major for *him*, even if it's not compared to how others would act. In the end, I don't think Jaken had jack to do with Rin being revived. For one thing, Sess is the one who went into the Underworld to save her, regardless of consequence, and he even renounced Tenseiga and said nothing was worth her life. His mother clearly knew Rin was important to him, she *knew* he was sad. She was just being a bitch and playing games. Sess was probably uber pissed as well as sad and didn't want to say shit to his evil, manipulative mother - understandable. Sesshomaru is pretty messed up in the head (I imagine his mom is a contributing factor), but he has so much character growth throughout the series, and that's almost entirely fueled by Rin.
