Great repair, Don do you use KWM or Bergeron bushings? Matt
@dperry428

Bergeon or make my own on the lathe from brass rod stock. Since I'm not in the business and only do a few clocks per year, I can't justify the larger inventory of KWM. Thanks for the comment.

I have 2 Sessions clock movements from Black mantle clocks both in need of work , I'm tempted to take one of them apart and try my luck and cleaning them up and going through it before I start on the restore on the clock housing .

Butterworth Clocks sells miniature ball bearings that are used to replace bushings especially in Hermle movements made in the 1970s.

Hello Mr perry have you ever thought about putting some brass polish on a brush for the gear faces while it’s on the lathe?
@dperry428

I do that with a brush on my workbench. I don't want to be cleaning splattered polish off my lathe.

Another successful great service work of a poor clock that was drowning in grease. How long do those pivot buffing sticks last before you have to replace them ? I am trying to purchase a pack of them with different grit sizes. Thank you for sharing your work
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
They have lots of surface area and are fine if you're not doing a lot of work. I only fix maybe half-a-dozen every winter. What works well is to buy fine grit sand paper, cut strips and glue them to popsicle sticks. You can get grits to 5000 or 7000.

Hello Mr. Perry! I thought I was doing alright with my repairs, but they're cobbler's work compared to yours! I just need experience, I suppose. I've got a clock in the workshop right now that's definitely been in the hands of a shoemaker; riveted rathbun bushings, solder on the lantern pinions, it was a wreck. One of the pinion shoulders has a chunk taken out of it, I think someone replaced the trundles at one point and that's the only way they could think to get the old ones out. The shoulder definitely needs to be replaced. What's the best method for removing lantern pinions?
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
Amazing what a mess some people can make in the name of repair. To remove the lantern pinion, support under the shroud and, using a punch with a hole that fits over the pivot but sits on the shoulder of the arbor, drive the arbor down and the shroud will come off. The support I use is either a crow's foot or a split stake like this 2.imimg.com/data2/GT/HJ/MY-3662529/split-stake-250x250.jpg Use a vise to hole either the crow's foot or the split stake.

@@dperry428 Thanks! I got a punch set and a foot ordered. I've managed without them this far somehow. I have a other question for you. When rebushing an anchor, which part of the hole is generally worn? I'm having a hard time visualizing which side to file.
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
It's not really important here as the anchor is adjustable by moving the tabs that the holes are in. Just ream the holes and put in a new bushing. It will be close enough.

Just wanted to give you an update! The clock has been running flawlessly for a week or two with the new shroud. It's about to go back to its owner tomorrow. I wanted to thank you again for your willingness to help amateurs like myself. Were it not for you and your videos, I never would have gotten into this incredible hobby, and if I had I certainly wouldn't have had so much knowledge of it. So far I've fixed dozens of clocks and have had lots of people asking me about their clocks. All thanks to you! I really appreciate it, and look forward to new videos.

Mr. Perry, Have you ever worked on a Embree grandfather clock movement weight drive ?
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
I've not worked on that specific maker's clock movement, Effingham Embree, who made tall case clocks in the late 18th century and early 19th. I have worked on clock movements of that type and, in fact, have one of my own.

@@dperry428 Do you happen to know how you adjust the escapment on this movement? The crutch on this is a flat stiff piece made of brass with a half moon toothed piece at the end with a pin sticking out that goes through the pendulum extension. The crutch doesn't seem like it should be bent. I would send a picture but don't know how. Any help would be appreciated. I've learned a lot from your videos and hope you can continue. By the way I've checked everywhere for a video on a Embree movement and can't find any.
@dperry428
@dperry428 Жыл бұрын
Usually, there is no adjustment except for beat. That is done usually by moving the tight friction fit of the crutch to the arbor or of the anchor to its arbor. Post pictures to your channel.

Well, I'm 80 and don't know what the clipboard is. Only one I know of is on the computer and not on the internet. You can upload video to your KZbin channel. Use your phone to take a short video of the movement. In the upper right corner of your channel page is a little box icon with a plus in it. Click it to upload your video.

I would like to contact you about service to my 1875 Seth Thomas Wall Clock movement. Similar condition to the Sessions Movement. It may not need as many pivot repairs, but springs were over greased. I hoped I could just clean the pivots and oil, but the more I learn, the more I realize it should be professionally cleaned, and serviced with proper tools. I can tell you more in email and send pictures for your consideration. I can't figure out how to contact you except on youtube. Please let me know.

My wife inherited a Sessions mantle clock that is over a hundred years old but didn't run anymore. I took the movement out and soaked it in mineral spirits for a couple of days. Then I lubricated the entire thing and put it back in the case and it started to work again. After adjusting the beat, it started to run just fine again. I knew if I took the movement apart it would never go back together so try the simple thing first, it just may work.
@dperry428
@dperry428 6 ай бұрын
The problem with the "simple thing" is that, while you might get initial functionality, the pivot holes have NOT been properly cleaned and the pivots themselves have NOT been polished. You may find that the clock will run for many years but, in the end, the remaining pivot hole contamination will turn into a grinding paste that will cause extensive wear. Next time the clock doesn't run, it will require extensive rebushing and/or repivoting. On the other hand, if you don't know how to properly clean the clock, taking it to a clock shop will be very expensive, so, if you made it work, you made it work, for how long, no one can predict. You take your chances. I don't.

@@dperry428 Please don't take what I said the wrong way. You are a true craftsman and I admire the work that you do. I know just enough to be dangerous. If I would have taken that movement apart I'm not confident it would have gone back together the right way. I did learn a lot from playing around with it. Getting it to run again and then trying to get it to keep time was another challenge.

I'm not taking it wrong. It's just that others read the comments and will often take advice from those comments. I just like to caution those who do that there are possible consequences following that advice. You can't believe how may times someone has made a comment of how they "just sprayed it with WD-40". I usually just delete those comments as I've had to undo the damage in many clocks that were "just sprayed with WD-40. Thanks for your comments. I do understand not wanting to take apart a movement. Been there and done that. I also understand how expensive it is to take a clock to a shop. Labor is expensive. My advice is, if you do the shortcut method, buy some "parts only" movements on ebay, gain some confidence in taking apart a movement with them and, sometime in the future, do a proper cleaning of the family heirloom.
