I've been trying to figure out something along these lines for my ever spiralling audio files, project sessions, samples & especially drive backups 🤕 Carbon Copy Cloner has been my tool of choice for the past 10-15 years & I found it more workable than time machine. The recent APFS thing has slightly thrown a spanner in the system I started building but have been considering backblaze for making a temporary cloud backup while I rearrange the copious data I'm sat on although I'm dubious about the integrity of cloud security across the board

hello, I couldn’t create a partition, this option is forbidden in disk utility, do I have to erase the disk and use a fat32 initialization?
@OneByteAcademyOfficial3 ай бұрын
Hello, if you are fine to erase the whole disk it will probably solve all the issues, it's good to do it from time to time, but not many people commit to it. I am not so sure about the fat32. I am myself using APFS format. You can check my video about these formats. It's really old video but nothing has really changed about this topic so based on that you can probably make your decision about the disk format better. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKLZeIuNbNp5adE

Good video, thanks. I'm adding 3 partitions; 1 for Mini, 1 for Macbook Air, 1 for files. Unfortunately I only got 1TB HD but I think it's OK. Split it 400GB, 400GB and 200GB.

Should have 1,5 .. 2x of your computers SSD for timemachine. If it's full, it'll overwrite older backup files!

And what about divide it in APFS volumes (no partitions) and use one for Time Machine? Thanks for the useful video!

Is this procedure usable for installed apps as well so that when getting a new MacBook it will simply "paste" all apps installed in the previous machine (besides files) ?
@KristofKorcsog3 ай бұрын
Yes, when you setup a new devices theres an option for restore it from time machine. Also restores settings etc as it was on the backed up device.

I have a new samsung 2TB external drive and when I try to use for backup time machine it gives me a red exclamation symbol and give me a message Time Machine cannot back up to this disk. I have two of these external hard drives both Samsung both 2 TB both new. Time Machine refuses to back up to either one of them. Any ideas please?

Same issue. Went with a new SSD. Maybe re-partition with APFS?

I have a WD portable hard drive. I TB is Time Machine and 4TB is other data. The other data partition has become corrupted. I contacted WD and they said they do not advise using a partition for Time Machine and all I can do is try data recovery. FYI.
@OneByteAcademyOfficial11 ай бұрын
Of course they will always tell you the opposite just to avoid responsibility for the damage. It didn't get corrupted because of the partition. If you didn't split the disk you would loose everything. This way you have at least some data available.

IMO it's not a good idea to use your Time Machine Backup drive for anything other than backup. How do you backup files in the non-time machine partition for example. Yes that partition can be backup by Time Machine but if the disk fails you have a single point of failure loosing both the file and the backup. Also because Time Machine saves every version of a file as it changes the backup with over time grow in size to be much large that the amount data being backed up. Better to have a secondary external drive that can also be backed up by Time Machine. External drives are cheap and that will avoid a single point of failure.

Sorry, I could understand your accent but the audio quality was very poor.I hope you can improve your audio quality. Perhaps you had your microphone set to the wrong pattern type.
