Set Fishing Reel Drag (Spinning, Lever, & Star) the RIGHT WAY | BoatUS

If you're like most folks, you give your fishing line a tug and guess whether your fishing reel drag tension is set correctly or not. But, hold on! That's not the RIGHT way to set fishing reel drag. Since we're talking about drags, my understanding is that you should loosen the drags so that there is no drag at all when you're done fishing for the day.

Hey Bruce - you're quite correct, you should always loosen up the drags for storage, because the drag washers can get "pinched" if they sit tightened down for extended periods of time. After that, they aren't nearly as smooth. Thanks for watching!

My friend, I'm new using star drag reel. They were no much fishing rods where I come from. I bought a dtr 40L reel, one Quick question, in the oposite side where the star drag is located, there is a buttom that goes up and down...what this buttom do?. It could be a stupid question, but I just don't know its use. Thanks for anybody help.

Thanks for the question, Amaldo. You're almost certainly looking at the clicker. When the button is in one position and the spool revolves, it will encounter little to no resistance and spin silently. But when you push the button the other way, the spool will emit a clicking noise and provide some minimal resistance to spinning. This is usually used for an audible alarm when you leave the rod in a holder and get a bite. If you leave the rod in a holder with the drag disengaged, having the clicker on will also help prevent backlash. Hope you find this helpful!

10 lb drag is a little light on 30lb you need more drag to turn the fishes head. 20lb drag is fine for 30lb especially if you are using fluorocarbon its a little stronger than mono and little bit more abrasion resistant. The other tip is to use a circle hook so it sets in the corner of the mouth.

Good way for people who like to be exact. But having to do this every fishing trip for 5+ set ups is very tiem consuming. Normally if youre experienced enough you would know how much drag by pulling.

It wouldn't be time consuming unless you were changing the test on your lines. I would set on a day that I was cleaning the boat and not going fishing.
