If anyone can't find the "c_cpp_properties.json", ctrl+shift+p and search for "C/C++: Edit Configurations (JSON)" then open that. In there, if you don't have the "browse" or the "path", put the code instead in "includePath". This works for me.

The latest trend in the developing world is a worryingly intense fetish with Visual Studio Code, which is a glorified Notepad++ with exceptional plugin support, fueled by a strong dislike of conventional IDEs for being "too heavy". Apparently 10GB of disk space and 500MB of RAM is too much to ask for in times where both RAM and disk space are dirt cheap, so these people complicate everything.

@tanker242
@tanker242 5 жыл бұрын
@@foster5902 miles? No... if your on linux you can run c++ code in 5 seconds. sudo apt-get install gcc vim main.cc ... write hello world program then save and exit the text editor vim... g++ main.cc ./a.out ... Hello World! ... Done! Windows is the same way but but not as fluid which it why many developers use linux. Vscode is just another text editor with code highlighting like vim, notepadd++ ect. Technically id you already havw minGW for windows installed you can write a c program in anytext editor like notepad then run g++ on your .cc or .cpp file from the windows console to conpile your peogram. You can make gcc compile for any operating system or architecture its able to even if your arent on the type of OS or architecture.

@@Dan.TheFriendlyGuy I've only heard of "code runner" from that other video on KZbin video on how to C++ on Visual Studio Code. "code runner" seemed sketch to me because it had few downloads compared to Microsoft extensions. Also, to you point, it seems "IntelliSense" is already in Microsoft's "C/C++" extension. I followed the first reply "Continue watching from 13:20" and managed to get it working without Code Runner. This process has been vastly improved with newer versions of VS Code: 1. To setup C++ for MinGW, follow this quick tutorial: code.visualstudio.com/docs/cpp/config-mingw 2. To easily setup C++ projects with tasks, configurations etc. setup for you, download this extension: marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=ACharLuk.easy-cpp-projects (I have not tried this personally but I am sure it works as expected) Due to the modular design of VS Code, this process is similar for setting up most "uncommonly used" languages with it. Once you realize the actual design idea behind VS Code, you understand that a relatively quick setup cycle is worth it for the simplicity and modularity you receive afterwards.

Can't you generalize the tasks.json build file for compiling ANY .c/.cpp file (which is currently open) which does *NOT* have the name "main.cpp" ? I mean, for your shown build method to work, your file name has to be main.cpp and not xyz.cpp. Any solutions?

I didn't follow the video that closely but in those cases you would insert a wildcard character into that part of the build settings. Also from what I hear vscode works on a project basis. For example if you are working on a project you run the command from the root folder and it will compile all c, cc, and cpp files into .o files then merge them into an output file

Just add the extension "C/C++ compile run" by danielpinto8zz6 and press F6. So much easier. Steps: 1. install vs code 2. install mingw 3. add the path of the bin folder to environmental variables as shown in video 4. add the extensions "C/C++ intellisense, debugging, and code browsing" and the "C/C++ compile run" 5. write download or copy&paste a hello world program, open it on visual studio making sure the file extension is ".cpp" 6. press F6 while the cursor is on the completed program, it should compile and build an ".exe" file

Thanks for the clarification. I had seen where someone had typed up these instructions, but they weren't exactly clear in certain parts. I got what I needed from this video. Thank you so much.

I followed the instruction to the letter and got an error in the command prompt where it couldn't find g++. Any advice?

@AS - 08RS - Sir John A Macdonald Sr PS (1540) It's not a VS Code issue, it's an issue with Microsoft's command prompt.

@AS - 08RS - Sir John A Macdonald Sr PS (1540) I don't think you understand. I'm NOT using the VSCode terminal. The error is in Microsoft's native command prompt, it has nothing to do with VSCode.

As I watch this video I tought: Must have a faster way. And it is, thank god! There is a VS Code extension called "Code Runner". Make the process a whole lot easier. I don't know if its resolve all the problems, but, at least to start learn, it helps.

First time create a simple hello world programme like shown in the video then this will become your template for other projects. The cpp and exe files' names will always be the same main.cpp & a.exe but with different content So copy the entire folder Change the name of the folder to your project name Then do ur work

Do we need to follow all these steps for every new cpp file we create? I mean always edit cpp _settings.json and task.json for every new cpp file?
@blueblue3301
@blueblue3301 6 жыл бұрын
No, cpp_properties.json and task.json is used to build project, but not which file. If you need to debug, you need to configure the launch.json file.
