I'm curious why you wouldn't simply tie in to the 12V power wire feeding the tail lights as opposed to running the wire all the way to the battery.

There's a good reason for that. Newer vehicles use smaller gauge wiring to save weight and expense. Smaller gauge wire equals less capacity in each circuit. The taillight circuits have enough capacity to handle the load of the vehicle's taillights, but not those of the trailer. Also, drawing power from anywhere else but the battery could expose the vehicle's electrical system to damage caused by short circuits in the trailer wiring.
