In this video we're deploying the free and open source openmediavault software. We'll examine hardware requirements, go through the installation process, and set up and configure the Network Attached Storage. Then finally we'll look at accessing the NAS from a device on the network.
Note. While I didn't mention it in the video, please bear in mind that RAID is not a replacement for a good backup solution. While it will give you some protection against drive failure, it will not bring back files that you have accidentally deleted, for example. For this reason, always make sure you have a decent backup strategy in place. If you'd like to learn how to do this, you can watch my "Back it up - Easily automate and secure your backups (for free)" video by clicking on the following link:

Thanks a lot to guide me through that installation/setup (it took me nearly 6 hours) For those who want to install it here are a few problems i ran into and how i fixed them: Etcher failing to put the iso on the thumbdrive and seemingly destroying the usb stick in the process: format the drive with the xommand prompt and switch to a pc where windows defender isnt active. PC wont boot into BIOS and freeze framed before startup menu (HP): disable fast and secure boot and change usb thumbdrive with the iso. Cant find the storage drive to create a filesystem : wipe the drive under "disks" Edit: In order to prolong the life of the thubdrive with the OS, i installed the flash memory plugin, and did what was under "optional". This way i ended up with the drive set to read-only and sice i didnt figure out how to fix it otherwise i ha do redo a clean install and lost all data in the process. I guess all in all, it was a grat learnig experience :)

SSDs are cheap enough to be used as an OMV OS drive. They also can use their extra space to extend the drives life. I am going to use an old PC and a Pi 4 for OMV. The old PC will be a testing box and a backup server.. The Pi will be my primary server, for 7/24 use. OM?V also supports many other services beyond simple file storage. My Pc based OMV will explore several of them. It is very strongly recommended users sick with the Sable OMV versions. Betas such as OMV 6 are a large source of user and support headaches. I read this on the OMV website. OMV seems like a great NAS / Home Server platform. Many thanks for another great video

Another excellent tutorial after just watching your Turnkey Linux Zoneminder set up. Any plans to run through that on an OMV Docker system and Shinobi too? Which is better? Any plans to also do a TV backend like TVheadend or Media portal?

Thanks. I'm planning to look more closely at Docker in a future video. It won't be on OMV, but since Docker is platform-independent, the content should still be applicable. I set up TVheadend in my PiPVR video, if that's any help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnKpZ5qZjqypnqM

Hey, this has been what I'm looking for an easy setup video best I've seen yet. thank you for this, However as for example here we are using USB for running the omv, and yes we know that disks fail. if the USB drive with omv gives up and fails how can we recover from this?
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 2 жыл бұрын
No problem. Your best bet would be to clone the USB drive. You could use something like Rescuezilla to do this. I did a video on this software, if that helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGG6oYl4qtmHjZo If you don't want to do a straight USB drive to USB drive copy, you could use the same software to create an image of the USB drive instead. Then, if disaster should strike, you can copy the image onto a new USB drive :)

Thank you for explaining easily about NAS and OMV, while i am eager to know that what if I set up my NAS device then how to connect it to the Internet? Since OMV is a ful OS for NAS device how can we integrate NEXTCLOUD to it and use that storage from Internet. Although I have seen your video about NEXTCLOUD as well but I am still wonder that how to do that since I could not find that on any platform, Please help us to explain... thank you I like your videos I am new to linux based OS switched from windows recently so i am learning every day, your videos help alot in networking since i want to set up a home network but i had to plan a layout for it . You're welcome. If you're wanting to run Nextcloud on OMV, you'll need to look at first adding Docker to OMV, and then using the Docker image of Nextcloud. With regards to creating access from the internet, feel free to take a look at my ZeroTier video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bXSVcnqkp56EY9k Hope that helps :)

@@atomis585 Yes, Docker can be a little overwhelming at first. You don't need to bother with Kubernetes, as that is for larger enterprises. Portainer makes Docker a lot more user friendly. My video on setting up Airsonic covers some of the basics in Docker, if that helps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6KZYn9ves-MrJI

Perfect video to follow, and works great, But for some reason probably because i'm using a mac , transfer speeds are painfully slow, not so from my android tablet to the pi share, i'm sure it shouldn't take almost a day(24 hours) to transfer 1.2 TB, i'm guessing its a mac problem
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does appear to be an issue with Samba and the Mac. There's a post in the OMV forum about this very topic, if you'd like to have a read: forum.openmediavault.org/index.php?thread/8751-slow-transfers-from-mac/&pageNo=1

@@bytemypi2918 Thank you i will have a look, Have or will you be looking at dockers in OMV ?
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if I'll be looking at Dockers in OMV specifically, but I am thinking about doing a future video on the docker service itself at some point. One of the great things about Docker is that, once you have it up and running, it's basically platform agnostic. So you can utilise the same containers, no matter the underlying operating system.

Thanks for a great tutorial. I am getting ACPI errors on reboot. Someone suggested using NO ACPI command, but I don't know how to do this. Please if you know the cure let me know. Thank you.
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
No problem. If the ACPI boot errors are preventing the system from booting/working correctly, I'd try resetting the UEFI/BIOS back to default settings. If that doesn't help, check if there's a BIOS update available from the manufacturer of your computer's motherboard. If there isn't, or that doesn't work, there could be a fault with the motherboard. If, on the other hand, your NAS is working okay and you simply want to hide the ACPI errors during the boot process you can do the following. Log in to OMV's command line (Terminal) as root and issue the command: nano /etc/default/grub Change the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off" Hold down the Ctrl key and press X. Type Y and press Enter to save and exit. Now update the bootloader by typing: update-grub Then type "reboot" (without the quotes) to restart the system. OMV should now spin up without displaying any ACPI boot errors. Hope this helps :)

Isn't better to set the static IP address via router settings??
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
If you're setting up Amahi as your home server using the recommended approach, it will take over the DHCP role from your router. Once this happens your router will no longer control any static IP reservations, so just as your router requires a static IP address so to will Amahi. Hope that makes sense.

Can you use/manage external hard drives with OMV?
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 4 жыл бұрын
You certainly can. If, for example, you connect an external USB hard drive then go into "Disks" (under the "Storage" section) in the OMV web panel, clicking "Scan" should add the drive - just as it would an internal disk. A quick note, if you're going to use external drives, it's advisable to leave them permanently connected once you've set them up. Enjoy your NAS.

The installation partitions and wipes the drive so unfortunately I don't think that would be possible.

I think you can install to the full drive initially, then shrink the partition with gparted, designate the rest as a new partition drive, and…BAM!
