@embrya263 жыл бұрын
@Caliber8250 Doral hated and mistrusted the Aes Sedai for shunning her at 13 and Nynaeve took on that hatred and mistrust for herself without having even met an Aes Sedai. She still holds strong to that despite being proven wrong time and time again yet she calls herself a Wisdom. And you're right, she never offers a solution other than "I don't want to" or "We don't want to". The latter of which drives me up the wall because she always tries to speak for everyone which is ironic and hypocritical because that's exactly what she blames Moiraine for doing all the time. I'd also like to throw Rand in the mix because he's a b*tch too. He lashes out at everyone simply because he can't have what he wants in the way he wants it and to hell with everything and everyone else. Talk about being selfish. He too has been proven wrong time and time again and yet remains petulant. Every time he blames or lashes out at Moiraine or Egwene because he can't deal with his own feelings I want to punch him in the face. Mat is a product of his upbringing so his attitude and behavior don't surprise me at all. He does have a darkness in him but that was seeded by his parents and his need for self-preservation is strong because of it. Of the problematic/annoying af characters, he's one that I don't necessarily blame for being how he is. He's still annoying but I get it. Nynaeve and Rand I can't stand.

warning SPOILERS AHEAD: In the books, the boys (who become men) from two rivers have many reasons to not trust aes sedai. They aren't just "foolish boys"... one of the reasons not portrayed in the show (and an inconsistency with the book) is where Matrim found the dagger. He took the dagger because he grew up poor, and thought he could sell it during their travels. The dagger in the book was found in a treasure room with Rubys and gold piled to the ceiling and chests full of gold and diamonds. The environment enticed and enchanted him enough to take something. Thats not a foolish precedent, even though in the book they were warned not to touch anything, they were never told why. One very important reason Mat and Rand don't trust aes sedai (we find out later anyway), that the tower has a faction called the black ajah, and the red aes sedai are primarily concerned with bringing down all men (all false dragons and the dragon reborn) who can channel. The bond portrayed between the three two rivers boys, and even between the two women from two rivers, does not translate whatsoever to the screen. This superficial dynamic where they all hug each other doesn't feel heartfelt to most of us watching the show because there has been no character development to establish the bond they are all supposed to have with each other. It also becomes an interesting conflict later too, when Rand develops his talents as the dragon and begins to fulfill prophecies, he agonizes over using his closest friends as pawns to prepare for the final battle because he cares about them too much. Without the character development to establish that bond, it raises a big question as to where the TV adaptation is going. Also in the books, Mats evil persona builds very gradually. It gets really bad, and this condensed version through a few episodes does not do the gravity that evil portrays in the story justice at all. It takes a group of aes sedai to only partially heal Mat and sever him from the dagger. He develops holes in his memory, and to say the least he is never the same person after that. The great thing about Robert Jordans storytelling is that he personifies the struggle that the characters are forced to go through, and the idea that even with channelling, not every conflict is resolved completely. The evil in the books is that great. So when Moiraine prances into that room and heals Mat from the dagger in 2 minutes, its a huge letdown because it cheapens the story dynamic. Rafe Judkins does not know how to tell a good story.

This show has a strong rating so far, that means the TV adaptation is doing something right. Since I haven't read the books, I don't know if this first season covered one or multiple books. But given how many novels there are in the series, there's plenty of material to get through which should equal several seasons. I get what you're saying about the bond between the friends not being fleshed out. But the showrunners have to be careful not to slow down the pace of the storyline or viewers may lose interest.
@allenburton76813 жыл бұрын
@@Concepcion30 I wish the ratings were truthful, but its well known that people can be hired to write good ratings for different websites (metacritic and rotten tomatoes to name a few) in order to increase hype for a show. With the amount of money that Amazon has, it would be unusual if they didn't hire an ad agency to conflate the numbers to make the show seem better than it is. So don't think they are doing something right just because people (supposedly) like it. The first season completely butchers the first three books, changes character arcs, story lines, and makes several mistakes and omits or changes the story dynamics to a point where it will be nearly impossible to tell an even better story later in the tv series without doing either some serious damage control or changing the story even further to fit the dynamic. At this point I think its irredeemable. I wish the developers for this show actually used the material from the books to make this series, but its obvious they didn't. I encourage you to read the books, as they are a thousand times better. People generally don't lose interest in a good story, even if the pace is slow, as long as it's developing into something emotionally and tangibly meaningful. I am afraid the show is so fast paced and filled with irrelevant story arcs and plot holes, that the characters have no time to develop into what they are supposed to be. I for one have already lost interest. And it's without expecting everyone to know or have a degree in storytelling, or for those that have taken a good writing class. The screen adaptation of the story is in shambles. I think I form that conclusion from reading a really good book that I see being torn to shreds on the big screen. I think if it takes more than a month for season 2 to come around, nobody is going to watch it. It's that forgettable because there was nothing in the first season that emotionally pulled in the audience and kept them hooked.

@@allenburton7681 I've read all the books but haven't yet watched the series. I agree with you on the point that the books sort of explain why the Two Rivers folks don't trust Aes Sedai. Aes Sedai always have their own agendas going on. But even when I was reading the book, I did get irritated at them (especially Nynaeve). For some reason, Robert Jordan's characterisation of female characters started becoming pretty skewed and annoying (mostly the fifth book onwards). And the pace started slacking as well, almost as if he wanted to stretch the story to several books. So I'm not sure if an absolute book adaptation that follows the characterisation and pace might be a good idea. But yes, just this clip sort of disappointed me. The show's characters don't do justice to the characters in the book.

I keep forgetting (or blocking out) how bad this 'adaptation' is... for anyone considering reading the books, be prepared - this show is Wheel of Time in name only yet will probably somehow manage to spoil all the best parts of the books. You're better turning it off entirely until you get through the entire series. Seriously. A deep dive was done and they figured out that roughly 7% - 9% of what happens on-screen actually happens in the books, and even that bit of it is often misrepresented.

The show runners stated that this is a different turning of the wheel than in the books, the books are also too elaborate for them to do it exactly the same in the show. It would cost billions of dollars and cgi that just doesn’t exist quite frankly. I think this was a safe and pretty good adaptation of the books
@Ellis_Hugh8 ай бұрын
@@marquisewilson7335 Nobody - NOBODY - ever expected them to do the exact same thing as in the books. That's not what this is. The showrunner said from the beginning that one of his biggest goals was to 'fix' Jordan's 'problematic writing', specifically his embrace of the binary nature of masculine and feminine roles in society. If you have a philosophical problem with that, why on earth would you adapt a much-beloved series of books where that was the foundation of the entire narrative in the first place? I could go on with countless examples of why this is a bad-faith 'adaptation', but that's granting the premise that's it's an adaptation at all, and quite simply it's not? It's been determined that between 4% and 7% of what we see on screen we saw in the books. Think about that - not even 10% of the show is what Jordan wrote. That's not because over 90% of it was too expensive to film. They didn't make Mat's dad a drunk because it was too expensive to do otherwise. They didn't make Nynaeve and Egwene Ta'veren because it was too expensive not to, they didn't make Warders cry at the drop of a hat and cuddle together by the fire due to budgetary reasons, they didn't repeatedly take key moments away from the male characters and give them to the female characters because it was less expensive to do so. The simple fact of the matter is that this show was made by people who hate the books expressly for people who had never read the books. It was both an insult and an assault on Robert Jordan's work and the people who have loved it for decades, and it was done for ideological reasons alone.

Ugh this makes me so mad. This show could have been so great and still could be. I honesty love the actors even if some are a bit stiff. They really feel part of the world. In another timeliness HBO got hold of it and gave it the first few seasons of GoT treatment. Such a rich world. Such juicy lore. It feels like an uncleaned and unpolished gem. But its worth still shines through in some parts like here. You can see how dangerous and just plain nasty the the taint of Shaddar Logoth is. Chills. The actors and us fans deserve better! It absolutely would not have. There are so many boring chapters and pointless parts in the eye of the world (a book which i love) hell the audio book alone is 36 hours long, you cant make it 1-1 into a telivision show, hell i am a super fan and i wouldnt watch it if it was 1-1 with the book, they did a great job making it into an actual show the majority of people (and not the small bunch of whiny book fans) would actually enjoy.
@allenburton76813 жыл бұрын
It really would have! If they just strictly took the best elements from the books and adapted them to screen it would be a thousand times better. This garbage with inconsistencies and character arcs and cameos that will go absolutely nowhere is disappointing. Rafe Judkins needs to go back to storytelling 101 and first develop the characters, explain the conflicts, build to the climax, and resolve the conflict. None of that is established in the tv series. We don't even know what the dragon reborn is or why he has to exist, because nobody has bothered to explain it in any context that does it appropriately.

@@alexanderrose1556 "There are so many boring chapters and pointless parts in the eye of the world " so replace it with worse parts that were not in the books instead? The whole Steppin storyline was absolutely not necessary, the whole "who is the dragon" mystery was boring, dragged out and ruined any character development the characters would've had. Book fans aren't whiny, they are utterly disappointed with how much they spit on Robert Jordan's story. The "1:1 book to show" argument is such a straw man, that literally NO ONE claims they wanted or expected. That's such a disingenuous argument to defend how bad the show was, and you know it.

Well, it seems very....diverse....if nothing else. I won't be too hard on them though since the source material is so generic. I started reading this series years ago and it was just too cheesy and lame and predictable. It is the same as a thousand other books. Same book, same plot, same characters but with different names. The Witcher...Wheel of Time......why do they keep making shows based on crap books? Why not make a show on a good series instead? The Malazan series would be an amazing TV show. Instead they pick something corny and unoriginal like WoT. Then to make it even worse, they make a woke version of it, just to insure that it fails.
