P2P is usually not encrypted and even though torrents can use encryption it's apparently not really good encryption and it's not good at doing anything more than avoiding traffic shaping. And ISPs can tell you're using P2P because you're connecting to random people and sending loads of data. But of course, if you're using a VPN then your ISP doesn't know what you're downloading or what your PC is connecting to. And even then, if you're using the right VPN they might still be more trustworthy than your ISP. Keyword "might".
