The key to the story: Keep things simple! The number of hook styles that are out there now has gotten ridiculous. Sticking to four basic hooks styles sounds great! Great video! Thanks for sharing.

Probably one of the best overall synopsis videos about hooks to use for soft plastics. It reinforced that I’m not far off from what the pros are doing.

I never considered altering the angle of the hookset depending upon what style hook was used on a texas rig. Did I hear that correctly?
@yamiatem54093 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s right. But more often than not I’m just gonna rip tf out of it
@Wired2Fish3 жыл бұрын
Yes, in part. The main thing that determines hook set angle is distance to the bait. The closer you are to the bait/fish (short casts, pitches, flips), the steeper the set angle relative to the lake bottom or water surface. The opposite is true on a longer cast. More distance to the bait/fish lessons the set angle relative to the bottom. In addition to this, technique can increase or decrease set angle based on setting straight on or side-setting the hook. For example, it is most common to set the hook straight upward when pitching, flipping or short-casting close to cover, as the bait/bass are often in an among cover, and your goal it to extract them vertically from the cover (think punching matted vegetation). In this scenario, Seth is saying the flipping hook design delivers the best hooking percentages.

Great content! I always just default to EWG Offset hooks for my soft plastics, but am thinking I need to change that up! Thanks for the vid!!

You bet Wishin4Fishin. EWG a good all-around but Seth provides a useful instruction guide to try some others. Good luck in your experimentation.

nothing wrong with EWG, remember simple is just as effective, and cheaper

Seth has great logic on hooks. This might give me the opportunity to finally try a offset round bend.

Its crazy how a slightly different hook can mahe a huge difference one way or the other on landing bass. Im a guy who all brands of all styles and I choose my bait then choose my hook on which one matches the shape the best. Each brand has slight variations from eachother in the same style of hooks.
@Wired2Fish3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. Treating the hook as the bait too. Pick a confidence hook then fit a bait to it, instead of the other way around. Interesting stuff to think about.

Peep the split ring on the ewg 🤔👀 good idea

It’s actually a welded ring. Comes on the VMC Ringed EWG hook. Link in description. Beneficial for hook ups.

🤔 maybe for extra action..like ties to the split ring instead of the eye itself 😲

He explains the reason in detail with this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f53cZaBuhMeWY7M Its for better hooks ups and less leverage long story short. But no one can tell it like Seth so ought to watch that vid lol.

It looks like a split ring attached to the eye of the ewg hook -why is that
@maxb19853 жыл бұрын
I remember reading that it makes it harder for the fish to shake the hook because the hook can pivot on the split ring and it kind of separates it from the weight
@Wired2Fish3 жыл бұрын
Its a welded ring and as maxb1985 is saying, it for better hook-ups and less lost fish. VMC makes them and they are called "ringed wide gap hooks".
