I love the 2nd song because it's the theme of accidentally aggroing a lv80 monkey and dying immediately, or hearing/surviving past the first 15 seconds of the song and realizing you actually stand a chance, so it starts to sounds kind of heroic.

@@NeilMarshall6same here. I think it’s mainly because I don’t like the beginning as much and fights typically end before you reach the good stuff, while that’s not the case for most other battle themes in the game.

I love Exploration. But it's that one battle theme no one talks about. And it's actually insane how the ost is strong enough to overshadow even this banger.

Yeah the fight always ends before you get to the solos and freestyling at the end, it's a shame, that's one of the best bits of the whole OST

Fun fact in the original sound track version of "those who stand against our path" they have a synth instead of a guitar, and the song is also slightly different with different parts added

Yeah like with trumpets, more drums, and even slightly different additions when it does the synth and second guitar playing over each other it extends that part it plays after it

From what I remember, Exploration only plays in two areas. One of which you can't go back to in the beginning of the game.

Those Who Stand Against Our Path is easily the biggest example of how Unique Monster themes let you immediately know you're in danger. I've seen people hear You Will Know Our Names for the first time and go "why do I hear boss music?", I've never seen someone hear this song and not go some variant of "uh oh". Even if you're familiar with Xenoblade, hearing the name and realizing it sounds just like Xenoblade 1's boss theme An Obstacle in Our Path can tell you it's bad news before even hearing the actual song. Exploration is a sick piece that is severely underrated, and mainly because it's severely underused in the game. Even in the few areas it appears, the worst part about it is that its exclusive to regular enemies who don't live long enough to hear it in full.

As far as the different vibes between 1 and 2, it's worth remembering that there were many years and a whole separate spinoff of sorts (with a different composer, but still) in the series in between them. It'd be sort of odd if the soundtracks weren't this different from each other.

Hot take: Those Who Stand Against Our Path >>>>>>> You Will Recall Our Names. You Will Recall Our Names is great, solid piece, but it’s too…heroic throughout if you ask me, especially against UMs who can one-shot you. Those Who Stand Against Our Path feels more like you’re up against something that on first glance is insurmountable, and you usually don’t get to hear more than the first few seconds early on in Gormott (home to four of the strongest UMs of the game, mind), but once you make it past the first verse and get to the buildup to the chorus, you feel like you can do anything at that point long as you keep your flow going and don’t mess up. There’s actually two versions of Those Who Stand Against Our Path. The first is the one most people are familiar with, the version you hear in-game and in Smash Ultimate (which IIRC also uses Exploration. If so, glad Sakurai included that hidden gem). Verse 1 and 2 sound nearly identical. However, the OST has a different version with synths for the second Verse and a different buildup into said Verse. Give it a listen on your own time. I won’t say one is better than the other, but I can see why the in-game version forewent the synths.

The first time you hear You Will Recall Our Names is garunteed to be through the story after the first major power-up. The fact that it doesn't play until Chapter 4 explains why it's more heroic throughout; by the time you hear it for Unique Monsters, you've already had time to get used to the battle system and would generally have more confidence going into battles, and your first reaction to a Unique Monster wouldn't be to run screaming in terror anymore.

@@angeldude101 I guess? But that makes less sense for Torna where that’s the first UM theme you’re likely going to hear (and you’re going to get wrecked to) but the main UM theme for most of that game is Those Who Stand Against Our Path.

@rodrigobarrera2281 As someone who's 100%ed XC2 twice? ...I can totally understand his frustrations with the game. I have many of the same ones myself. Sometimes, I can't help but want to help him out a little since... well, the game ain't gonna do it! I do hope he gets past the uphill climb it has in the beginning, though, since when this game gets good, it REALLY gets good.
