Freedom and Security is a song that does something I rarely see video game OSTs accomplish, which is double as both an unsettling, story-driven mood piece and still be suitable lo-fi for chill listening out of context. It seems hard to invoke both discomfort and ease in the same piece, but this song has always done that for me, and for that reason is always one of my favorites in this soundtrack.

5:28 I can't speak for previous Personas, but P5/P5R is set within major cities. You're constantly riding subways, it's crowded, and there is indeed a jazz club (in Royal), so I'd say it matches pretty well. Visually in game, most NPCs are shadowy silhouettes, and given some of the story themes, it always represented to me that we pass by thousands of strangers throughout life without really noticing them, even if they might really need help, but when we focus on them and listen they're given color and form. "Wake Up Get Up Get Out There" for example has repeated lyrics "Can we make a difference", and the overall jazzy upbeat nature is probably meant as an energetic push. Freedom and Security would maybe be an example of a counterpoint to that, which plays in a location where people have basically given up. Or maybe that's just me trying to gleam meaning after spending 500+ hours between them all.
@zecendiaАй бұрын
Iirc p3 is set in a decently big town,not quite literally Tokyo levels of p5,mind you,but still decently big.P4 in contrast to either of them is set in a town so small they have one whole grocery chain store that ran most other stores out of business. It allows p4 to have its murder/kidnapping mystery storyline seemingly without stakes quite as high as the ones in p5 and P3(seemingly is the keyword here,because much like the other ones,it does end up with some good ol jrpg shanking of some god adjacent entity). I cant comment on p1 and 2 locations.
@MagnyusGАй бұрын
The music absolutely matches the setting, because it's such a spanning story, the music also matches the mood of whatever activity or task you'll be doing. The only times you'll find that the music juxtaposes whatever you're doing would likely be user 'error' like something serious is happening but you leave the area and go do something silly in a sidequest or something, but for the most part they avoid that by making activities like that unavailable during serious parts.

To answer your questions, Persona 6 has been rumored to be in development for a long time. Personally, I expect it to be announced at the next Persona Super Live concert, which is May 31st 2025 in Osaka. Before then we have the DLC for Persona 3 Reload called Episode Aigis - The Answer, which comes out in a couple days. So expect some new Persona requests soon. After that we have Atlus's new game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, which comes out October 10th. It's unknown if Metaphor is a Megami Tensei game at this time. The lore nerds are gonna need to really dissect that one, though with what we've seen I lean towards yes. More importantly for you, Shoji Meguro is the composer for Metaphor, though the musical style is quite a bit different from his work on Persona. Concerning your other question about do the songs fit where they're played... It's very hard to divorce myself from my biases, but generally I'd say yes. To me, the music greatly enhances the individual scenes. There's a synergy there that's hard to put into words, especially for someone like me that has no background in musical theory. I think the craziest example is actually Battle Hymn of the Soul/The Battle for Everyone's Souls. As you know, that's an instrumental track, but during the fight where it plays, there's spoken word poetry throughout the fight, which effectively acts as the lyrics for the song. "The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate... Entrusting his future to the cards, he clings to a dim hope. Yes, the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed...Attaining one's dream requires a stern will and unfailing determination. The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... The silent voice within one's heart whispers the most profound wisdom... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Celebrate life's grandeur... Its brilliance... its magnificence... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Only courage in the face of doubt can lead one to the answer... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... It is indeed a precious gift to understand the forces that guide oneself... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... There is both joy and wonder in coming to understand the hearts of others... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... One of life's greatest blessings attained from the gift of life is the freedom to pursue one's personal goals... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... To find the one true path, one must seek guidance amidst uncertainty... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... It requires great courage to look at oneself, and forge one's own path... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Ever-present alongside time is fortune, cruel and unflinching... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... One needs strength to endure, and rise above suffering and torment... The Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... In the face of unavoidable disaster lies the opportunity to search for redemption. The moment man devoured the fruit of knowledge, he sealed his fate... Entrusting his future to the cards, man clings to a dim hope. Yet, the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed... Beyond the journey you have taken lies the absolute end. It matters not who you are... One thing is always certain: death awaits all." If you've never seen the Nyx Avatar fight I'd honestly recommend looking it up, as in this case more than any other, you haven't heard the "real" version of the song unless you've seen it in game imo. As for Life Goes On and Freedom and Security, Life Goes On is actually a fairly insignificant song in the grand scheme of things. It's the music that plays during exams. I think, as its name implies, it's meant to make you feel that despite all the crazy shit happening around you, the world won't wait for you. No matter what you did the day before, you've still got school in the morning. Life just goes on. Freedom and Security is the dungeon theme for the Prison of Regression/Depths of Mementos. This is the classic JRPG moment where the game shifts its focus to "Let's kill God." though this is a lot more literal in Persona 5 than in most JRPGs. Throughout the Prison of Regression, you see all the people in society have given up their free will and submitted themselves to God, content to be ruled over in blissful ignorance. The people inside the prison include all the villains you've defeated up to that point, implying that though they were criminals, murderers, rapists, slavers, etc, the villains were in a sense walking the same path of rebellion as the main characters, and by defeating them, you put them in the prison and forced them to submit to God, effectively acting as agents of the system you were rebelling against. It's meant to make you question if you're actually in the right, since the system oppressing you is the same system that puts rapists behind bars. There's a dissonance between your ideals and actions that may not be reconcilable. You espouse freedom as the highest virtue, but what about when people use that freedom for evil?
@MetroidFissionАй бұрын
Life Goes On, if I remember correctly, only plays when doing your school exams in the game so you hear it a couple of times and that's it. It doesn't have a version with vocals though I get why you think there'd be one lol. Freedom and Security plays in a very late game dungeon, right before the end of the game so that's why it sounds so tense. I might be wrong but I think the name of the song on the OST is "Freedom and Peace", you can find it under both names on KZbin so it's a bit confusing. Game is very good, though I think the one reason I wouldn't recommend it is because of how long a playthrough can be. I did a playthrough where I did about 99% of what was available in the game (no NG+ exclusive super bosses) and I have just over 150 hours in it.

You mention the difference in vibe between smt, and while some of that is because of the setting, (SMT is post apocalyptic usually) some of it that shoji meguro hasn't composed for SMT since Nocturne. So while SMT4 and 5 are definitely inspired by some of his tracks, over the course of those games ryota kozuka has been carving out his own identity musically? Which I think really shines through in the latest tracks in SMT5 Vengence. I mean, SMT5 basegame alone had 20 different battle themes for different locations and bosses, and vengence added even more, it's amazing stuff with a great variety.

Persona 5's soundtrack in particular is less about evoking setting (most of the time) and more about evoking theme. P5 is a tribute to the phantom thief genre (very popular in anime, such as Lupin III or Kaito Kid), which is known for having a lot of jazz. Individual songs, of course, vary in what kind of theme they're trying to represent, but as an overarching idea they want to keep the player feeling like they're a stylish thief even when they're in a classroom taking a test.

Contextually "Freedom and Security" fits well with its respective dungeon and blends two opposing feelings together; not an easy thing to pull off while making it cohesive. It's also cool how the song has the cadence of the scat singing from "Tokyo Daylight" but presents it in an entirely different light. The liveliness of Tokyo is just a facade and the reality is the bleakness below. On a storytelling front I think the song does very well and that's what makes it memorable, least that's my take on it. Personally i'd recommend the blend of Jaldabaoth/Our Beginning for something Jesse should listen to but most of the soundtrack be bangin in one way or another so aint a loss there.
