Yeah the coolest thing about these variants is that they'll swap back and forth seamlessly while going through areas, whenever you move in or out of the 8-bit/16-bit era. Messenger is a fantastic game with amazing music and art.

Ah, The Messenger. A game that is in contention for my favorite OST of all time, which I don’t say lightly. It’s actually really funny that you heard Sea of Stars music first, since that is the same studio and composer, he just didn’t use a pseudonym for that soundtrack. But yeah, The Messenger was made by the same studio and the music was done by the same composer as Sea of Stars, since it was the game they made prior to SoS. For some gameplay context, the game is a 2D platformer heavily inspired by stuff like Ninja Gaiden and has a central mechanic that involves going back and forth between the past and the future (which you picked up on somewhat). This involves switching back and forth between an 8-bit (past) art style and a 16-bit (future) art style, with an NES-style 8-bit soundtrack and Genesis-style 16-bit soundtrack to match. As a result, every area theme and some boss themes all have 2 versions to listen to. It even has a free dlc that adds an extra 30 minutes of music, which is just as good as everything in the base game (and I may have already requested music from). All in all, it’s a really fun throwback to old school platformers that still keeps things modern in many ways, and even throws in a god-tier soundtrack for good measure.

Oh not only are you gonna get more of The Messenger, expect more Sea of Stars, too. One thing to note is that the game goes back and forth between “past” and “future”, represented through 8-bit graphics and 16-bit graphics, respectively. As such the sound fonts also reflect their “era”

The Sea of Stars regular battle and boss themes are so good! Really need to play through it again.

Haha! I had a good feeling you'd like The Messenger, Jesse! Apologies for the added pressure from hyping this game up so much, but I'm glad you saw it was worth it. Let me know when you've run out of Messenger tracks - I'll throw some more your way! Great video, mate!

Take the feelings you get listening to this. Now imagine if an entire game gave you that feeling constantly. That is The Messenger (with a side of genuinely hilarious comedic writing).

Yoooooooooo, Glacial Peak! There's this weird touch in The Frozen Light I've always loved, RIGHT at the beginning of the song when it plays that opening melody, you can hear it switch seemingly at random intervals between two different duty cycles/"instruments", where one is a bit shriller and one is a bit smoother, and it always reminded me of like, when you're humming a complex melody with a big octave range and your voice cracks/you have to "shift gears" at points to keep the notes in a comfortable spot (even the way the instruments overlap a little bit as they switch feels reminiscent of those "voice cracks"). It's a really, really cool effect and I can never listen to The Frozen Dark without missing it bc in that one the whole opening line is just one instrument lmao

I played The Messenger for the first time last year and had such a great time with it. It has an incredibly fun/addicting gameplay, a genuinely great sense of humor, and a soundtrack that I never get tired of listening to.

Dude, Jesse you need to play this ! I can't overstate how amazing the retro platform feeling is here, its absolutely perfect even the humor is great, the game does not take itself seriously and you can tell with how much love the devs made it! Needless to say the soundtrack is nothing short of legendary. An experience to live. Love literally the whole of it. Retro goodness at its finest ! This is a game that is pure "fun" for people to have "fun" and nothing more. You will not regret playing this, its cool as hell! So reminiscent of some of the great oldies like Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden style! Ninja power! Rhythm in this music ost literally drives you to keep on going and having fun! DOPE. Definitely one of the most joyous and most amazing underrated indies to have come out during the last decade. Cheers! PS: Will be waiting for reaction to the rest of the OST as well!!

The chiptune soundtrack is definitely inspired by Tim Follin. I don't think you have ever covered any of Follin's music did you Jesse?

The Messenger is so good. I'm very hit and miss with platformers and I'm sure I have far more started than finished, but I finished this game twice earlier this year and I'm sure I'll play it again. It's so fun and then you get music like this. There are seamless transition between NES and SNES style both musically and graphically and it's so cool. The whole of this game (and Sea of Stars - same devs) are huge love letters to the genres the devs loved growing up. And definitely wear it on their sleeve.

I find it ultra funny how much they hyped Sea of Stars for example recently, and how much worse of a game it ultimately was, while Messenger the underrated passion project-perfection flew under the radar like it never happened. Its insane how underrated some great games are. Maddening even.

I love this game and it's soundtrack so much! There's like 30 min long extended versions of these songs and I never get sick of listening to them. My only complaint with OST is that the official songs don't have enough loops. I wanna listen to them for longer!
