Breaking News: Man who grew up with the Genesis prefers the Genesis soundfont Jokes aside, in a soundtrack where almost every song has a chiptune (8-bit) version and a Genesis soundfont (16-bit) version, it is interesting to hear which versions people prefer. As someone who didn’t grow up on Genesis music, I prefer the NES sound on the majority of the soundtrack, but there’s definitely a handful of songs that I think benefit a lot from the Genesis sound. And when every song is a banger, I’m not going to complain about getting two versions of each one, lol.

You NEED to play this man. Its retro goodness at its absolute best. The soundtrack has literally 2 sides for every track. An 8 bit version paying homage to the 8 bit era of games, and a 16 bit modern one, to show the improvement of sound capabilities over the years. This is even reflected in graphics in the game but I won't spoil anything more! Its so seamless and its amazing and it fits the narrative 100%, and it SLAPS so much too. Insane game. Some of the tracks will truly leave you in awe. Truly a game the devs LOVED to make, every single moment of it, there is even great humor on it and pure fun in all its entirety to be had. Mustplay! You won't regret trying it ! PS: This game was easily the best love letter I have ever seen to the older shinobi and ninja gaiden games !

For some context on the area these songs play: the Rivière Turquoise is a grove that was burned down and the river poisoned after the demons invaded. You get to use the mechanic of travelling back and forth between past and future while you traverse it and that's how you get to experience the 2 songs. The future version of the level (and the song itself) both seem cleaner since a powerful Messenger came in and defeated most of the demons, bringing in the Butterfly Matriarch to take care of the grove and keep it green and clean. It's actually a really beautiful place when you see it in its restored state.

The Rivière Turquoise is one of the sickest areas in The Messenger in general; all the other areas when traveling between past and future are _relatively_ the same, design-wise? Autumn Hills is more notably different than some areas, but even then its not a huge difference, but with the Rivière, its _night and day_ when you swap and its soooo cool

The Messenger was 100% composed by Rainbowdragoneyes (Eric Brown), the next game this studio made (Sea of Stars) is the one with a few guest tracks by Yasunori Mitsuda but was mostly Rainbowdragoneyes As for the two versions, you switch back and forth in time in the same area when the river was poisoned and when it isn’t, and most of the time spent in the level is the “blue river” with brief dips into when it was poisoned if I recall correctly

This game was such a treat. Shame it never got more dlc. It's worth a playthrough just to experience how seamless the music transitions are.

MORE THE MESSENGER

Yay more Messenger! Yeah, the first version suits its area, which is very unpleasant but it isn't a song I'm too fond of hearing on its own. There's a lot of momentum too though, so it does fit in all the ways

Personally, there are so many other tracks from this game I'd choose you to react to, but hey, can't get wrong with more The Messenger. Tho I guess in case it means many of the greater tracks aren't spoiled for you, bc goddamn are they worth waiting for until you play the game. In this case the Mega Drive/Genesis version is the clear winner of the 2 by a land slide, while the NES variant is somewhat underwhelming (normally I end up liking the Genesis ones more just like you but usually the difference in quality isn't as striking imo)
