You can only appreciate Japanese if you speak it. If you watch sub, you must depend on the English, where many references and jokes can and do get lost in translation. For native English speakers, sometime the Dub is far better for animes like Cowboy Bebop or School Rumble, since they perfectly translate the meanings into a way you can understand rather than just literally. Some dub voice acting is bad, but sometimes fansubs can be just as unreliable.
