Always 5 steps ahead. Love the variety of posts and handrail thank you soo much excellent work. I was intrigued on asking on the pipe rail . Glad your showing it.

Lookin good. One way to make the blocking stronger is to make the blocks as a tee. One piece as you have it, then glue and screw the "tee" to the first block and the floor. Then you have bracing going in both directions. 30 years carpenter passing it on. Keep up the nice work.

Nice job. Looks good. I too use PL Premium. A tip for those who don't know.... PL Premium will expand as it cures depending on the humidity. So if its humid and you use too much, it can "move" your workpiece as it cures....."Don't ask me how I know that"

My arsenal of tricks grows with every video. Thanks.I have a trick for you if you're brave. from a furniture maker like me to a great finish carpenter like you. I assume you used a torch of some kind to age the wood and a wire brush of some kind. the issue is the ax marks the're fresh looking. They should be darkened as well to show age but rather than stain, there are dark waxes that will work rather well by just rubbing some dark wax into the cut. I know it's scary but it will add to the authenticity. maybe try experimenting on some stuff. You'll thank me later.You're the best!

The Newel post on the landing. Interested to know why the vertical pine brace piece isn't doubled up in thickness or machined from a thicker section of timber to add more rigidity?
@markb46564 жыл бұрын
I was also wondering the same thing and realize that most of the movement will be sideways (the width of the board) so doubling it up will most likely not add much additional support and the top rail will limit the movement in the other direction.
@InsiderCarpentry4 жыл бұрын
Yep. Nothing is added by beefing it up in this case.

Where is the floor joist in relation to the edge of the flooring? Is it set back a few inches? Im confused on how you attached that middle post support through the drywall. Thanks!
@peterochester23204 жыл бұрын
Why did you extend the blocking down only about 4" instead of the full depth of the floor joist/truss? The added distance greatly increases stability.
@InsiderCarpentry4 жыл бұрын
It is 12” down. It’s just the screws that I left high so they would be covered. The board was covered in PL.

It’d be good to see how you price some of these bespoke jobs up. It’s hard to get the price right without overcharging
@jrsuk11704 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. A pricing video would be really interesting because it doesn't matter how good a carpenter you are, if you can't price you won't make money.
@benchippy80394 жыл бұрын
Well said! I’ve underpriced jobs before and it’s cost a fortune, plus it’s hard to stay motivated when your not earning enough. On the other hand if the jobs overpriced you struggle to get referrals

Aren’t you concerned that gluing the caps in place will cause the caps or the Newell posts to split during the change of seasons? What are the dimensions of this particular Newell post? If they’re sufficiently small, I wouldn’t be too worried. However, if they’re 6 in.², I would be worried.

Did you use a real hewing axe or did you cheat it with a normal axe? I am always impressed by your job sites. Seems like all the builders around here like to stack trades so everyone is always in your way and it take 3 times as long to get anything done ever.

How long does it take you to complete a trim job that size? Do you ever lose potential jobs because of the time it takes to do them alone?

Yes, I definitely lose jobs because of time but that's fine. I like to work for builders who are willing to wait a bit for better quality. The super fast production jobs aren't my thing.

The only thing for me about the glue is, in the future if someone wants to change the look it’s going to be impossible to remove the posts. Otherwise, those posts are not going anywhere.
@InsiderCarpentry4 жыл бұрын
Generally with newel posts I feel they should be very difficult to remove. Reason being they are a high risk install item, meaning if they come loose when they aren't supposed to its going to be a major pain to fix it after the fact. Nothing worse than a wobbly newel post.
