What does initial timing matter if you you get pinging with too much advanced timing when the advanced timing from the distributor kicks in? Seems like total timing is more important.
@MrJonny22773 жыл бұрын
Yeah, would think he would of at least check it while the light was hooked up lol. Idk guess was on a hurry cause it was getting dark? Probably should of tightening distributor bolt when was done, unless I missed it, was hard to see anything without any light. ANYWAYS, Setting Initial timing, is more of a base line or starting point to get engine started and running and timed at idle. Then you want to check total advanve by increases rpms to around 2500 to 3000 and check the total advance around 36 to 38° or so and fine tune until engine is happy and running smooth. At higher rpms the more it'll advance to compensate with engine speed.. He also probably should of said something about tightening the distributor bolt when done lol and maybe checking that the rotor is point to #1plug wire at tdc but guess if he didn't change it so figure no need. But if someone didn't know to make sure it was #1 plug wire or wires were off, it would be a big freaking headache. But there's are tons of youtube videos on it. You could always watch some videos that covers it. Just seemed like you would cover everything at once while you are taking the time to do it, maybe lol.

set your initial idle and timing in gear with brake applied or parking brake or against a curb or pole. the engine will idle smoother after the vacuum advance is reconnected to the hose.
@FEDERALBOYSENTERTAINMENT2 жыл бұрын
So put car in drive are reverse with brake then set the timing is that correct I been having problems when I put in drive are reverse sometimes car cuts right off have to give it gas to stay running are when I give it gas sometimes has a stumble before take off thanks

Hey there I have a question so I’ve got a c10 with a 454 bb and it’s backfiring through the carburetor when accelerating at a good rpm, I opened up the valve covers and there is one rocker arm not functioning as the others and I checked the rocker arm to see if there is any play but it is tight . I did a fresh tune up including oil spark plugs and wires. What do you think it’s failing? TIA!

@@mechanicsinherited7079 did some messing around with it, possibly still mixing water and oil with need head gasket, doesn't idle but starts and can floor it but dies when going to idle, might still be carbon filled, oil when I got the truck was purely mixed with water including filter so changed the oil and filter and added water in the radiator but it slowly goes down when running because it wasn't hooked up, has compression in all cylinders,
@mechanicsinherited70793 жыл бұрын
@@LeroyJenkins666. I would do a leak down test on the engine. I would also pick up a "spill free funnel" from a parts store. The funnel will have radiator attachments. Once hooked up, fill the funnel full of coolant, and start the truck. If you get bubbles in the funnel while the engine is running. Then you have exhaust fumes getting into the coolant. Which very well could be a bad head gasket.
