Setting SKY+ Box Onto SINGLE FEED Mode

This video shows you how to set a Sky+HD box into single feed mode for when only one satellite cable can be connected to the Sky box itself.
This should be done so that the Sky box behaves as should do but please be aware that when you have the Sky box connected in single feed mode you will only be able to watch and record one programme at a time.

Just stumbled across this looking for tips on Sky-Q. When it rains I loose certain channels and a lot of the others pixelate, just curious can I use my old Sat finder (used for the old sky & sky+ lnb’s) to align my dish with a wide and LNB as I suspect it was moved during strong winds?

Hi I've just came across this video. I previously had a sky+ hd box with 2 cables in bedroom. I have just changed the box to a smaller sky+ box but it only has one input for aerial. It keeps on saying no signal when I put either of old cables in. I also got a Y connector from eBay and this doesn't work either any help would be great thanks.

Hi, question for Tom or anyone else who can help, what is the maximum number of aerials I can attach from sky dish to sky boxes around the house. I’m looking to have at least 5/6 rooms around the house to have satellite connection with the double aerial input. I’ll move the boxes around each room for when they are needed to be used in that room.

Hi, you could install a Octo LNB on your satellite dish and this will allow 8 cable connections. But if you wanted twin connections at your 5/ 6 rooms you would need 10-12 outputs. To do this, you would need to install a Quattro LNB on your satellite dish and run the four cables into a multi-switch amp - from here you could pretty much run as many TV points as you want, but I would get a 16 way for what you want to do. Hi there, I have 2 wires coming from an old Sky dish that I don't use anymore. I assume (if going to use Freesat) only one of those cables will carry a signal I can use? Would standard coax cable be used along with a F connector to connect it to the Freesat box since the wire has been cut from the outside, so I need to extend it.

If both cables are connected to the satellite dish then you could use either or both for your Freesat box, providing that you don't have a Sky Q wideband LNB on the dish in which case you would need to change this. Yes any coax that you buy nowadays will be fine as long as the cable is 'double screened'.

Hi Tom. We sent back Sky Q box today and connected up an older one just to get the free channels. I am getting that no satellite signal at the start of the video, but there is no channel name or programmes showing like on yours few mins into vid. I am also only able to control the box using the buttons on it. The remote, besides being able to change volume, does not do anything. For example pressing any number combination just results in a not available message from the TV (Samsung telly error message not sky TV box). Any advice on how to fix this. Thank you.

I run an old HD+ box in single feed mode as without a subscription, the second input seeves no purpose anyway and having it connected just wastes a feed. I guess that the difficulties in converting large apartment buildings and other multipoint ststems to Sky Q is good news for those of us who still use old Sky HD and HD+ boxes as FTA recievers as it means they should work for a while longer (and similarly that Freesat services are unlikely to be turned off imminently either). Both important considerations with the long-term future of terrestrial Freeview now under threat due to phone operators wanting the frequencies. It also means that i can continue to use my Sky Gnome portable speaker for a while longer, which is a very cool piece of kit despite dating from 2006!

Great video. Since the last SKY upgrade, my box has been playing up on the single feed (I use the other lead/feed for a my Open box). I wasn't able to see more than one or two hrs ahead on the EPG, now after following this video, This WORKS !! I don't suppose that I can record on this box now that I have stopped my sky Subs? Hi Ben, thanks. No afraid not, recordings are encrypted to the HDD so as soon as you cancel your subs you won't be able to even access them anymore.

Hi Mark. You could split the satellite signal. You could have a join that where you disconnect one room and connect the other as and when you need it. Using the single input sat cable from the LNB to the box, and connecting the HDMI cable to the TV, is there any other cables I need to access the Freesat channels or just follow the video. Unfortunately The Sky Q satellite dish has a completely different LNB so the sky + box won't work. You need a sky Q box.

Connecting one of the two cables will fine, but you will need to change your LNB on your satellite and your TV won't be compatible with the Sky Q one,

Your videos are really good Tom and you helped me out on your blog a while ago. We've got a DSCR system in a block of flats and I recently helped a guy put his Sky Q box into SCR mode which worked. Today I did this on a Sky HD box for someone and changed the channels to 9 and 14. I thought it didn't work because you couldn't record and watch a programme at the same time. After watching your video, you confirm this isn't possible so it begs the question, what's the point of putting it into SCR mode? I must be missing something here.

Hi Paul, thanks. SCR mode and Single feed mode on the Sky+HD boxes are different things. If you're setting up a Sky+HD box in SCR mode, you need install a SCR splitter (not required for Sky Q) and then connect two cables into the Sky box. In order to be able to do this you need to be connected to a compatible SCR system. Your dSCR system should be fine but you will need the splitter. Single feed mode is simply where you have one connection going into the Sky+HD box, you won't be able to watch record more than one programme at a time but if you don't set it the boxes can be a bit erratic. You will need either an old style LNB or a 'hybrid' wide band LNB for the older Sky Digital, Sky HD and HD+ boxes, and for Freesat. I had this problem with my partner's setup, tried connecting an old Panasonic freesat telly to her satellite cable and got no signal - turns out that the dish was part of a Sky Q install so it won't work (unless I get up on the roof and swap the LNB.)

It's likely that you will need to get a new LNB installed on your satellite dish to do that. Sky Q uses a wideband LNB and Sky+HD uses a Quad (or Octo) universal LNB. If you didn't want to do that you could get one of the new Freesat boxes that will allow you to connect a Wideband LNB.

If you have a SKY box that can record 1 channel whilst you watch another or record 2 channels at the same time if you are out I can not see why anyone would want to change to a single feed, don't get it

Well, I've had to put up with some annoying issues, presumably since I wasn't in SFM. For example, if I wanted to have a well-functioning EPG, I'd have to switch to the other satellite input. Also, sometimes the input that was needed to watch & record shows switched (which's pretty weird) by itself. As I've just put the box in SFM now (I only found out about the mode today), I hope that I can record an episode on 1 channel ending at 21:00, with another episode starting on another channel at the same time. Either way, it makes sense to do.

Hi Tom I appreciate the helpful and clear videos. I live in a 2012 built apartment building and have SkyQ fed by a single cable from a wall plate. There are 2 satellite terminals on this plate. I did have Sky+HD with 2 cable feeds originally. I want to leave Sky and move to Freeview or FreeSat. I still have the Sky+HD box and ideally will use it again without subscription to just view live TV. Can I use the single cable to connect or is it likely that the engineer on installing SkyQ has done something to prevent this? Many thanks

You have to pay a Sky subscription to record programmes and watch recordings on Sky boxes. It's about a tenner a month that they charge for this. I advise getting a Freesat+ box if this is something that you want to do.

Can anyone tell me please can you get Freeview channels through a Sky+ box by just connecting it to your aerial. My Mum has recently gone into a care home and when I cancelled her Sky subscription they said you can keep the box and use it just as a Freeview box. A friend of my Mum's asked if she could have it and as I've no use for it I said she could but I'm not sure how to connect it up! We have a HDMI cable to connect it to the TV but she lives in old folk's flat and it's a communal aerial so what other cables or connectors do we need to buy in order to get the box to work?
