I grew up in suburbs of Richmond, Va and there is a medical school there, MCV--VCU. Classmates of mind got their braces from the orthodontist interns which was a great cost saver so check with medical schools if one is near by. Also we hang on to our cars forever. My husband believes in oil and filter changes, checking brakes every so often, plus checking tire pressure.

My folks paid for books, it was very helpful. Since my parents hadn’t started saving for their retirement, and I could get grants and loans, I paid for the rest myself. The added bonus to shouldering the student loans was that it gave my credit report a good solid payment history to carry with me out into the world.

Dental work. Always ask if your dentist offers a cash discount. Ours does--5% on fillings, exams, and cleanings! Not sure about braces, but it never hurts to ask, especially if you do not have dental insurance and are saving up to pay cash. Even 5% add up fast if you need thousands of dollars of work done!
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea. We save about 3-5% by paying cash for braces. We do have dental insurance and we find out exactly what our portion will be, save that amount, and pre-pay our portion. I've never thought about asking for a cash payment price for fillings. I think when Larry retires and we no longer have dental insurance, this tip will be very helpful in strategically planning how to pay for more expensive procedures. Thanks for your tip!

Our 2008 Kia optima has 145,000 miles on it. A lot of the mileage is from trips from Oklahoma to Wisconsin or to Florida for vacations. The ride has gotten very uncomfortable, actually hurts my back when I’m in it. So since my husband still has a yr to go to pay off his 2017 truck and we have loans on our carpet cleaning van & machine, replacing the 🚘is on hold indefinitely. So instead we are putting $600 into new struts and we’ll continue driving it for awhile longer. 9:03

I guess that I already made mine. I bought a used car for cash in July. I expect that it will last for five years. I only have $3500 saved for the next car. I expect to normally save $3000 a year for the next car. This seems a little short for the purchase of the next car. So, I plan to save $5,000 by June to add to the $3500 that I already have. I can get there. With $8500 toward the next car and $3000 more a year, I should have enough for a good used Subaru Forester. I find that there is a point that one keeps making expensive car repairs and they don’t seem to end.
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
We would agree. We always try for $10K for a good, used car. That seems to get us reliable with fewer car repairs.

Hi Hope & Larry- I showed you two to my husband as an example of a couple who always agree on financial decisions and goals- Do you two ever disagree when it comes to money?
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
Yes, we do disagree sometimes. Shortly after we married, we set a firm rule. If we disagree on a decision, we wait and don't do anything - until we can come into some kind of agreement. If one or the other of us has a "bad feeling" about a decision, there is generally a reason for it. We wait for a day or two to think and pray about it and then meet again to discuss it. Sometimes it takes a while, but eventually we reach a consensus. I'd say it's split about 50/50 on whether we decide to move forward on the decision or give it a pass.

Hello, When you meet your goal (for the car for example), do you stop putting funds there and reallocate the money in different goals? Or do you continue putting them there? For example for the car, you mentioned you start collecting for the new one immediately. Would you use the leftover for the next car, like say 100 d was left over, it goes for the new car? Or would you set it into short term goal and start from zero at the car fond?

I'm thinking of getting an electric bike to cut down on the amount that I use the car. The only issue is is astronomically expensive. It's half the price to get an electric scooter, but when that runs out of battery you can't just peddle. I'm just waiting for them to be done building this new bike track. Right now I'm saving for an electrician to put in some more outlets which will also mean an expensive switchboard upgrade. I think a normal bike is probably going to involve too much peddling which means I'll end up taking the car anyway.
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
Electric bikes are interesting, but, I'm not sure about the range. When we took a weekend trip to Madison, WI, they were incredibly popular and we saw people riding them all over town. Larry and our youngest son (Phil) were going to rent a couple of bikes for a few hours to give them a try, but the bikes in the rack next to our hotel were malfunctioning and weren't charged up. So, they didn't rent them.

Yes. Minor repairs are included in our "Home Maintenance" budget. It is a separate category.

Hi Hope & Larry- do you suggest paying off the house before saving for retirement? We are in our early 30s and have 10 more years of mortgage payments.
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
We paid off our home first. Had we to do it all over again, we would have saved for retirement and paid off our home using any additional money we gather to pre-pay the principle. Not saving for retirement early enough was one of our biggest money mistakes.

When you say you recommend 20 % down payment for a house loan, do you also include interest in those 20 %?
@UndertheMedian2 жыл бұрын
No, here's what we are suggesting. If you are paying $200K for a home, you are saving $40K as your downpayment and financing $160K as your mortgage. I hope that helps.

@@UndertheMedian Thank you. I think I understand it now. I live in Norway and we have to pay 20% cash when we take a loan in the bank. I’m working on paying my loan faster. Hopefully I will be death free in 8 years.
@UndertheMedian2 жыл бұрын
@@stinejohansen8342 , in the US you can pay as little as 3% down on a conventional mortgage. I can't imagine putting that little down, but you can.

If I’m trying to pay off my house am I supposed to still put away money for a replacement car?
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
Depends on how quickly you need to meet your goals. We prioritize every goal. If you can pay off your home in 24 months, then it may make good sense to put your car replacement fund on hold. But, if it's going to take you seven years to pay off your home, then you really can't put the car replacement on hold for that long. You will probably need to find a balance between those goals and compromise and it may take you a little longer to pay off your home.

I save at least $100 per month for the dentist and have dental insurance.

Do you have advice for someone who doesnt make enough to save at all? We make around 30k a year while hubby is in College and I am homeschooling our children. (We have 7 kids ages 9 down to 9 months) This is hubbys last semester in College coming up and he will be taking practicum and will need 100 hours of observation time... He works 6 days a week, so the best option for him is to take 1 day off a week and go and do his observation hours. This cuts our income by $500 a month. (So he will be making right around 2k a month...)

Is there a way for you to earn a little extra cash? Cooking or cleaning for an elderly person, working a few hours when your husband is home with the kids? Look to see if you qualify for food stamps, the SNAP Program. Also, see if they have any food pantries around your area. Check to see if your church has any programs to assist you? Food, clothing, etc. It would only be for a short time while your husband finishes college.

Have you looked into the website that allows English speakers to teach English online? I forget the name, but I’ve seen quite a few people on KZbin who made videos about it.

We have an old VW Golf 250.000 km and maintnance cost of approx 1.000 Euro per year. Thats it. The car is so ugly nobody would steal it or break in even when we left it open. There is no fancy radio or navigator in it. I do not need a garage to protect it. And if it gets in five year the status of an oldtimer we get a tax reduction (Germany).
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
Strangely our ugliest car was stolen from in front of our home many years ago. I had a bad paint job and it was peeling in big patches. It drove like a champ, but looked absolutely horrible. We, literally, could not believe that anyone had even bothered to steal it. Turned out, they were novices and had broken the steering column so badly that they only got about eight blocks away. We had to replace the entire steering column, but it was cheaper than a replacing the car.
@cc-by8uk3 жыл бұрын
@@UndertheMedian Oh bad luck. Well we have this car for since my gf became 18 (now over 40). And even my mother in law want to give us the money to replace it. But to protect a new car would us cost 250 Euro a month for a garage. It just makes no sense to us to have a fancy car for 20.000 Euro and paying extra money for keeping it save. So we just say no thank you.

Yes, we had a black lab/golden retriever mix for 16 years. It broke our hearts when she died. We haven't had the heart to get another dog since then. We still both dream about her and the feel of her fur. I guess when it's time to get another dog, we'll know.
