I never thought about how much I saved,but I have probably done this on regular basis. I learned a time saver working Home Health where you bundle all errands and visits on one day from farthest away to nearest. For an entire day obtain prescriptions, groceries, gas fill up, pick up orders, oil changes,MD appointments . Requires ice chest with ice for groceries. Then no burning gas all week until 7-10 days have passed then repeat. If cannot get to all errands you end up with closest to home last on list,so easy to hop out and take care of that following day.. works to save Home Health agencies money, as you also try not to back track using extra miles.

The one week spending freeze genuinely helps me because it reduces my food waste by forcing me to eat up things in the fridge and cupboard which might otherwise expire. Also I save because I am using inexpensive ingredients like beans and grains and veg I got on offer - whereas on a non spending-freeze week I can sometimes impulse buy pizza or ready meals which cost more. I love the idea of a no buy week vs month! That seems much more achievable than a whole month of not buying anything. I often think of money in a monthly frame of mind since I only get money once a month. It makes it hard to wrap my head around bring it down to a weekly level, but it makes so much more sense to break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks of time and money.

I started doing that to conserve gas & to see how I could use up what I had. I wouldn't load up the week before either. I love getting creative with my leftover bits. Also, Roku is a Godsend & I think your family will love it. Keep up the great work.

From what i understand, the no spend challenges is to encourage you to not buy excess. You can still buy your necessities-food, shelter, utilities etc, but you can tailor the rest. So either limit your grocery budget and shop your pantry to cut that cost, or shop your pantry alltogether. Some people cut out clothes and shoes alltogether, others allow replacements if things break. There are a lot of variations on it, but i have been trying it for the month of January and it has saved us a LOT from buying things we dont really need and finding other ways to make do.

I've done no-spend days, weeks, months, years....I'm on basically a no spend life. I still have to buy gas and groceries...but I'm extremely sparing on gasoline. I can go 6-8 weeks without buying gasoline...sometimes longer. I stay stocked up in groceries. That means I can wait 6-8 weeks without going to the grocery store as well. So far, this January, I've spent $3.50. It was unnecessary. I still feel bad about it. I could wait till February to go grocery shopping, but I'm almost out of cat food...so I'll go. Love you guys! ❤

@@UndertheMedian I so agree...use what you have! I've taken this to extremes in the past, though, and paid the price for it. I once went 7 weeks without going to the grocery store and wanted to challenge myself to wait one more week before going. My cupboards and fridge were almost bare. I had a can of bamboo shoots that didn't get used in a Chinese meal once b a can of pizza sauce, half a green pepper, etc., things like that. At 7 a.m. I felt a strong urge to go grocery shopping. I ignored it. I never shopped that early. By 9 a.m., an ice storm had come and it didn't leave for two weeks! There were no cabs or busses. Nobody was able to go anywhere. Period. Fortunately, there was a market in the building I lived in. Normally the market prices were about three times higher than regular stores, but it was good in a pinch. So, for two weeks, all my groceries had to come from that market. The only thing was that delivery trucks to the market also couldn't get through. They were also running out of food. I guess the moral of the story is that when the universe suddenly and oddly encourages you to go to the grocery store, GO! But how often will that happen in a lifetime?

My tip is utilizing rags to use as wash clothes, dish cloths. A whole lot of used clothing passes through our home as we collect used clothing to help the homeless. Some of it is not useful to give away because it stained. Or sometimes our clothing gets stained and is not longer usable. This tip works best with cotton items such as old t-shirts. I launder the items and then we cut them up to use as wash cloths and dish cloths. Since we have so many of these unwearable items coming in, we usually dispose of the cloth after it's used. This tip also works well for ragged, stained towels. We cut them up into wash cloths or cut them in half to use as a disposible towel. This tip works great for our camping trips as well since we're trying to minimize how much laundry we have to do while on the road.

The humidity level is then wonderful, with no static or dry skin!

@@lsfunk01 , Medicare is healthcare for seniors. It cover a large percentage of the bills, but seniors still have to buy a supplemental policy which covers items that Medicare doesn't pay for. Great video ; thank you for taking the time to share other viewer’s wonderful tips ! Here in Canada one of our largest grocery chains is the Lobllaw’s chain ( The Great Canadian Superstore , Shopper’s Drug Mart , Extra Foods , No Frills to name a few ) . Their points program is EXCELLENT ! We do get additional points by having it linked to their MasterCard that we use for EVERYTHING . Clearly I know many disagree with credit card use but we have chose to - we are shall business owners & live on the farm so even our gas usage alone makes a difference ( they give you 7.5 cents / litre off at the pumps ) & we spend about 5000$ / yr on gas so it obviously makes a difference for us . We always pay our bill in full & live debt free ( including no mortgage ) so we feel it is a good choice for us . We now work half the year & 2 years ago when we 1st went away for the winter we used the 979 $ in points I’d accumulated on the card for a good part of our winter grocery bill ! We are vegetarian & gluten - free & spend a fair chunk on groceries every month . One of the things I love about their program is every week with the app they send you new offers based on your individual shopping habits & they can be saved for the next week if you happen to not be shopping that week or perhaps just don’t want to budget for it for that week , or it fits better into next week’s meal plan ect . I really love it !! Also because we are very rural & our nearest Walmart ect is 2 hrs drive away i use the Reebee app to price match at our 2 local grocery stores . Last week I purchased 4 one litre cartons of cream for 1.98 $ each because that was Walmart’s price - our local store’s price was 3.39 $ - so a considerable saving on that item alone . Continued blessings to you and your family from your devoted viewers in west central Manitoba !!!😊❤️😊

You are right Hope, it comes out to 3 months of no spending in a year. As for the Roku box, our TV came with Roku built in and we love it. We also use tubi for free movies too.

I have a sneaking suspicion that we need to ask our son who works in IT exactly what is on our television now. We just replaced our very old television with a smart TV about two years ago. We get some new channels now and I'm wondering if it has the capability to do this, too.

I use to shop at Walgreens a lot because that is where we got our prescriptions and it was very close to our house. The rewards are good, but you still have to spend money to get the points. In the end, I found that Kroger was always cheaper and Walgreens would lead me to buy items I didn't need.

Good advice to always double check prices elsewhere and not assume that the place with the coupon or the cash back is the cheapest.

Putting frozen bags of food things inside brown paper bags in the freezer - it will keep it "fresh" longer, without freezer burn! Especially if you have a freezer that automatically thaws a little to keep ice from building up in your freezer, the extra layer of brown paper bag does great. Brown paper bags I dont see much anymore, except Aldi!!

Hope and Larry, great video as always! One tip on internet streaming..Did you know that you can add additional viewers on one Netflix subscription? Our married daughter and son in law have Netflix and they added us to their account. So when we log on, we log into 'our' section and can watch all the content Netflix has available! We pay half and our kids pay half! It works out perfectly! I believe this also works with an Amazon membership too. But I have not tried it yet.

Thank you for sharing these ideas. I loved them! I downloaded the Supercook app while I was listening - what a great idea! One thing I've realized over the past few months is that I have been overspending on food. I justify it by saying food is a need, but really, I've bought way too much for one person, just because it was "a good deal." I have too much food stocked in my freezer and pantry - it's just a waste of money if I don't eat it before it goes bad. So, I'll be using the Super Cook app A LOT for the next while and being very mindful to only buy what I REALLY need!
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
Isn't that app great? I found myself playing around with ingredients a lot with it. I love it when a tool looks like a lot of thought went into it and it's actually usable in a practical way.

If you can tomatoes as I do (so that I don't get the salt in commercial tomatoes) for tomato sauce, I purchase my tomatoes at the farmer's market, cut them up and cook them part way and mash the pieces, leaving the skins on. I then put the pot into the refrigerator overnight. The next day, the juice will be on top of the tomatoes. I siphon the juice off and make it into my version of V8 for canning - great as liquid for rice. The tomatoes are run through a food processor and have much less fluid to cook down, so you get a thicker sauce in much less time. Two products from one batch.

Loved all the tips!! It is great watching you two interactive with each other! Since I have retired, I’m now receiving one check per month 😬😬 so my budgeting is looking a bit different nowadays. I am sure at the end of each month, I will be having a no-buy week 🤣 on another note, I recently did some on-line Amazon shopping and had put two items into my shopping cart. The prices were about $25 each. I then got pulled away from the computer and when I went back the next day, both items were marked down to $6 each! I could not hit buy fast enough. I think if you put items in your cart on a routine basis, you may not get the deals as much but I hardly let them sit there overnight so their algorithms may have caught my hesitation for not buying promptly and provided an incentive.

You got some great deals by waiting on that Amazon purchase! Making the final week of each month a no-spend week makes really good sense to me.

55 is a senior in the USA? Well I never................I am a senior..................At least I am not a pensioner yet. I undertook a no spend three month period. I purchased only fuel. No food. No clothes. NOTHING but fuel. I used everything in the house and saved a LOT of money. Our deep freezer was full and I baked for my childrens school lunches and husbands work lunch. It was fantastic. Saved a great deal of money and will always ensure that we have enough in our pantry to do this again, by purchasing bulk items when they are on special. Its incredible how far you can stretch food with vegetables from the garden, fruit from the orchard, and eggs from the hens. Wasting food is a sin in our home.
@UndertheMedian3 жыл бұрын
At 55 you qualify for some of the "senior discounts" offered by area businesses. Businesses begin to offer more discounts when you hit age 60 or 65. You don't qualify for social security (government retirement help) until a minimum of age 62 and medicare (senior medical expense help) until age 65.

About leaving things in the shopping cart. I do this to help quell any impulsive shopping. I leave it for 24 to 48 hours and oftentimes decide I don't need it. I can totally vouch for the Walgreen's member rewards, especially during your birthday month, when you get 10x points on purchases, ALL MONTH. They also have a weekly online coupon which gives you $5 rewards on over $20. They have better sales than the supermarkets on staples like cereal, coffee and tea, canned goods, ice cream and household items. And if you are a candle person, they have quality candles that go on sale often. They have also been a real lifesaver during pandemic shopping. Even in NYC, the stores are open and airy, and people seem to behave better in a pharmacy than other stores. Oh, yeah, you can get your vaccines there too. Overall, Walgreen's saves me hundred of dollars each year.

I keep the magnets that come off the plastic shower liner when I replace it. Of course, I have washed it to death prior to throwing it. In Alaska, we wrap our meat in plastic wrap and then either wrap it in freezer paper or put in zipper bags. This prevents freezer burn or your meat turning brown. This is wonderful for us who hunt and butcher our own meat. I also clean the shower while I'm in it to save on water.
