Yes, I have set my style-intentions about five years ago. I started with deciding on only to buy natural clothes (whool, cotton, linnen, silk) no more synthetic. Then I stopped shopping for a long time, I decluttered a LOT of clothes and made wishlist. My style kind of developed by this. I Really like your content and get inspired to continue. Especially to look more for second hand. 💕

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 not synthetics is a great one! It sounds like the work you did really helped you develop your style more. That’s awesome! I can already see it helping with mine too 🥰♥️ thank you for watching a supporting 🙏🏽 xx

Great video! The comment about buying for your real self versus your imaginary self is spot on. I’ve really started as well to differentiate between the beauty of a garment versus would this actually suit me and above all, do I need it. Looking forward to the next episode. Good luck on your journey!
@EmilyElizabethMay3 жыл бұрын
Yes!! You get it. It’s nice to admire pieces and other peoples styles without thinking you need it all. It’s all about knowing what suits you and what you feel great in ♥️

Your intentions are mine as well. I too often buy for my imaginary self. Fashion that doesn't fit my lifestyle.

My mantra from now on: Shop secondhand first; be mindful of what im liking and to NOT indulge in my fantasy self; and if I am to shop, shop only for my lifestyle,making sure that whatever I'll buy, it'll fit in my lifestyle. Thanks so much, this video is really helping me a lot. Take care and God bless you. Keep safe!

I made my first second hand purchase last week, and I’m so happy with it! I had been looking for a trench coat for two years and just found them too expensive. I got a perfect one for me, high quality fabric and tailoring for a bargain price on Poshmark. Creators like you inspired and motivated me to open my mind to second hand, thanks Emily! I look forward to following you on this journey, and I’m excited that you will present sustainable and ethical brands as well. Cheers!

Omg! This makes me so happy!! A trench coat is a great piece to get 2nd hand! 👏🏽 I’ve heard Poshmark is amazing 😍 I have been using Depop as it’s a bit more popular in Aus but will have to test Poshmark too 🥰🙏🏽 xx

I just recently learned that blended-fiber fabrics can’t be recycled, I had never thought about that, and often bought blends that were about 70-80% natural fibers, the minimum for comfort. Fast-fashion is full of these, almost every natural fiber fabric is bulked up with cheaper synthetics. This is really going to change my purchasing habits.

I'm sick of black too although I still own a couple of basic pieces that I wear, particularly in the colder months. However, over the last two years I shifted my color palette focusing on earth colors, especially browns, camel and beige. This summer I only bought beige garments and some of them will hopefully transition well into early fall. I might add another beige sweater or long sleeves shirt but overall I've never been happier with my wardrobe.
@sheilakosoff58063 жыл бұрын
I have tried to add more color and less black, but I have come to realize in my style journey that I rarely get rid of my black stuff because the are the most versatile for me. I do wear a color ( blue or olive in a variety of shades as a third piece or I add a yellow or red bag accessories) I discovered that in my style journey that colors overwhelm me as clothes and I never reach for the beautiful colors of dresses that I love . Even in the summer I will grab a black tank dress and throw a super long whiter turquoise shirt over it . I don’t want to wear black but I really do reach for it.

The way you’re explaining this process is brilliant! I’m going on a very similar journey and one point that really stands out to me is that I may love a piece on someone else but it might not work well for me (even if it’s a “wardrobe basic”).

Hi Emily, intentions #’s 6,7. really resonated with me. I have a closet full of clothes based on scenarios I’ll never experience because they are not congruent with my lifestyle! And that’s ok. I need to value MY life when I am cruising Pinterest or Instagram, ( this is just me personally) and then shop according to the life I lead and the things I do regularly, so I have the clothes I need. Thanks Emily.

Emily, I sat watching this video nodding away in agreement with you 😊 I have a small journal that I note down outfit ideas for each separate season. This has greatly assisted me to mindfully sort and cull items from my wardrobe. Your comment about your fantasy self certainly resonated with me as I have moved from a management position back to hands on nursing 😍. As a result I now spend most of my week in a uniform. I have also reviewed my preferences regarding which individuals I follow on social media. They now reflect my life choices overall and give me the confidence to keep moving forward on my journey. I am really enjoying your process of self discovery. Thank you as always for your honesty and integrity. 💜💙💚

🥰♥️🙏🏽 thank you Kate! Love the journal idea!! I am going to do something similar and keep it with my wish list. And I am also doing the same with following the right people on social media. It has such a huge influence. I’m also looking for people who are positive and make me smile 🥰♥️ Thanks for supporting me here ⭐️♥️ x

wearing colors that go with our skin/hair/eye tone is so important i think too, and not many fashion bloggers talk about it... btw what i found is that one of the crucial things to check when out of touch with our style, is to get in touch with our true self spiritually! ;)

Yes, and my style intentions are documented in my Don’t and Do Buy lists on my phone. I stopped buying synthetic fibers a few years ago, and have recently decided to concentrate more on the light neutrals and pastels, like powder blue, that I love. Even though they’re “In” this autumn, those rich, saturated colors don’t suit my coloring and I find them harder to style. These lists are highly personal, but some of my other Don’ts are dark items in summer fabrics, loud prints and 3/4-length sleeves(they’re too hit of summer, but my arms get too cold for them in fall, winter and spring, so they don’t get worn). My basic rule is most items must be classic. I do allow a few trends in, but in neutral or basic colors, like navy or khaki, and always choose the least extreme versions.

I think you can try another approach to decrease your wardrobe anxiety. I used to organize my wardrobe by category so I can "shop my closet" everyday. But it didn't work that way. It just make me feel anxious every time I open it. So I try the wonder wardrobe method and keep only a few "A game" pieces that I want to wear right now in at least 5 different ways in my wardrobe and store all the rest in another closet. That did change the game and really keeps my anxiety low.

I found your channel today and I love it. Be well!!! And by all means, no need to count anything, just be thoughtful. Could not agree more on minimalist point. Everyone has different goals and priorities. But fashion is an art and should not be squeezed into made up limits.

Agree! I could never reduce my wardrobe to 3O, 50, or whatever pieces. I love fashion too much!! To me, it is a form if art. I have, however started to weed my wardrobe down to more timeless and quality pieces. It definitely is a process but I am making some progress. Fashion is a passion!

I'm going to join in with this journey. Your style intentions resonated with me apart from wearing less black. I just love black clothes 🙂. In addition I have a style intention to only buy items that go with lots of other things so I buy less things I can't wear as they don't go with anything (this is something I'm guilty of doing a lot). And only buying natural materials so I don't wash plastic into the water system. This series is brilliant, thank you x

I love your second hand cardigan that you are wearing! I’m the same, I like a mixture of second hand and try to buy trendy pieces second hand at high street stores such as H&M and Zara. I’m short and pear shaped with a smaller waist, so I have to have some things tailored but my neighbor can sew and has a great machine for tailoring. So it helps her and me for her to make some extra money and she doesn’t charge high prices either. You have a great body shape for anything, I love the Levi’s you found second hand, Levi’s are not the best for me. Enjoying your videos so much Emily! 🙌🏻🇺🇸💛

Haaaa, I just bought black jeans today Emily!!! Not an impulse buy. I actually don't have any. I looked at online secondhand shops and local ones but found nothing suitable. My question: how do you go with purchasing pre-loved clothing online? When shopping in person you can really see and smell the quality and cleanliness of the item you're considering. Do you have many returns? Thank you, Tiina xx
@EmilyElizabethMay3 жыл бұрын
HHaha I actually want a pair of wide leg or flared black jeans 🤭🤭🤭 but just want to wear less of it in general. It was my “model” uniform for years, and that’s behind me now 🥰😌 Really good question about 2nd hand shopping. It can be really hard, I know. Firstly, I take my time with 2nd hand shopping and don’t rush into anything. I don’t worry about missing out, because there really are SO many clothes circulating around the world already, I’ll find what I want eventually. Next, I ask the person selling SO many questions to find out more about the item, I always ask for measurements too, to make sure things will fit me, like leg length and shoulder width etc. And I’ve also asked for more photos if they’re not clear enough. All in all, I know that I am taking a risk buying online 2nd hand so I weigh that risk up with the price and think about how hard/easy it might be to re-sell the item if it’s not right. I bought a pair of jeans 2nd hand, fit me in the waist perfect, length was perfect but hips were a tiny bit too big. I got them taken in and now they fit me great! ♥️ I’m gonna make a video about this soon with all my tips I think ⭐️

I also plan on going on a «find my own style again» journey so these videos will be very helpfull! 🤗 After working many years at a job that required an uniform, my personal style has become more «lazy» and «too practical». Why make the effort to creat an outfit if you have to change into an uniform anyway? 🤷♀️ But, in october I will start a new job at an informal setting without uniforms or dresscodes. This will give me the perfect opportunity to find my own style again and wear it every day! I am very excited and cannot wait! 🤗 Making a style plan sounds like a smart move! (I love making lists anyway 😝) I made a start already by finding my colour wheel that would look good with my skin tone. I plan on only buying colours that suit me.

Good topic. I decided to watch it twice and make a note of each number in the topic. I came unstuck at number one, I never buy second hand. Number two was easy as I have already sold it or given it to charity. It is not easy but I am not going to buy anything made in China. I will support my own country. I now own a lot less and it is so easy to dress myself without stress, in the season, for my lifestyle. Thank you for this. Xx

Just started to watch your channel yesterday and I love your videos so far. I have a question about the colors and how you found out what colors look best on you. I have considered a color analysis and wondered if you have ever had one. If so what is your color season? How has knowing what color season you are helped you in your style journey? I hope to purchase less and wear more by knowing and learning what colors and cuts work for me.

Emily, I love your videos and that you are so environmentally conscious. Except for things it is very chancy to do so (Pants and jeans), I buy most of my clothes on eBAY and do very well with that. Whenever I see an influencer doing a "haul" (just the word gives me the shivers now) I try to find a similar item on eBAY. You find many items that have barely/never worn and are in excellent shape, and I know the brands that suit and fit me, so it is not usually hard to do.
@kimberlyperrotis89623 жыл бұрын
I could never be a minimalist, or wear small capsule wardrobes, either. I love variety and selection too much. I just want to get my huge wardrobe under control. I am eliminating a few colors from my palette, they’re not “bad colors” on me, I just find them harder to style. I’m starting with the purple family, including the popular lilac and lavender. I’ve wasted so much time and money on things to wear with my purple leather moto jacket, for example, it’s just time to cut my losses, nothing ever seems great with it.

You can be a minimalist and still call yourself a minimalist even if you have ‘lots’ of clothes. Minimalism has nothing to do with the number or amount of any type of item in our lives. Minimalism IS a mindset and you have a ‘minimalist’ mindset. Being conscious and aware and intentional about what you have and keep and why. So please do not perpetuate the WRONG CONCEPT of what minimalism is by saying you aren’t a minimalist because you have and want to keep ‘many’ clothes. Hopefully this is an encouraging comment.

So Last year I did a lot of second hand buying on eBAY, and while I liked a lot of my purchases, I started worrying about all the energy it takes to send things from one place to the other (airplanes, specifically, which use a lot of energy) and also all the plastic bags it comes wrapped in. Do you have any thoughts about that?
@ashton48473 жыл бұрын
The thing is that would still happen with buying new. Weather online, or in store. The only way to really avoid it would be to go to local thrift stores. I would say its still an improvement from buying new, because a new piece of clothing has also gone through multiple shipments & factory processing. But it could be good to check any thrift stores nearby before you go online
@heidilanders98073 жыл бұрын
@@ashton4847 I do look at Thrift stores, but as you know, the odds of finding what you want is way, way lower than if you look on eBAY! On eBAY you can specify "pullover" "xs" "black" for instance and get all kinds of options, whereas in a thrift shop... but as you say, better eBAY than new.
