Wonderful - clear and straightforward. I hope to get my father's retirement clock running the afternoon when visiting my locked-down mother. Fingers crossed! ;-)

Relying on your video, I leveled and set the beat on my grandfather clock that kept stopping - sometimes days after being started. Thanks much for your useful video.

Hello Can you help me to fix my Howard Miller grandfather clock kieninger movement which stopped working around 10.30 am or pm. It has night silent option which make it silent from 10pm to 7.30am. It was working until my last windup which I dont know what I did wrong. The clock is oiled just 3 months ago professionally. Thanks for your help

do you need to take the pendulum off the leader? first try to install a new spring? then do this?

One of the cable threads which feed through the pulley came free from the anchor. I cannot snap in the end of the cable back into the anchor. Is there a way to snap it back in?

Most modern Grandfather Clocks have a self-adjusting beat, as does that Kieninger, just give the pendulum as big a swing as you can, and it will automatically adjust itself. If a self-adjusting beat clock won't stay running after you swing the pendulum as far as you can without hitting the side, then most likely the clock needs to be cleaned & serviced properly or has wear. You shouldn't have to manually adjust a self-adjusting beat clock. You have to distinguish whether or not you have a self-adjusting or manual beat, you shouldn't be able to push the pendulum hanger on a manual beat clock that easily. If you continue to run your clock without cleaning and servicing it properly, it will cause wear and require restoration, ie, bushings.

tgifford thanks for that tip on the modern grandfathers. I've been searching for a while on adjusting the beat on my recently inherited clock and found lots of demos and how to's, but nothing looked like what I was seeing in my clock. I was reluctant to try anything for fear of making matters worse. I tried your tip just now and the beat is perfect! Easy Peasey

Brilliant! I have a Howard Miller "Lewis" model wall clock that I absolutely adore. It is just over a year old, and I brought to commemorate our 35th wedding anniversary. However, recently it stopped keeping good time, and the pendulum would stop swinging after about three days (normally runs for a week at a time.). I found website that had this video on keeping beat. After listening, I quickly realized that was my issue. I adjusted the clock pendulum by moving it slightly on the wall, but it was off balance. I was a bit apprehensive about doing the procedure mentioned in the video. After running across your comment, I knew my clock is a Kieninger key wound. I leveled my clock and tried your procedure and voilà! She looks and sounds beautiful with a nice even beat and level appearance. Thanks for the heads up!

@@rogercolon2633 I’m having a problem with my 35 year old Howard Miller. It is slower and slower and eventually stops. Ideas?

@Cody J Miller Have you ever had it serviced? Best thing to do is to take it to a Howard Miller service store.

I have a 35+ year old grandmother clock. A pro came and got it working (previous clock guy used WD-40 and messed it up.) However, it won’t keep time. It keeps getting further and further behind. When I messaged him, he just keeps telling me to spin the dial on the pendulum tip to the right. I kept doing that and it never improved. Eventually, it just stopped working. I moved it back to the left and it worked again… but still slow. Ideas?!

With the pendulum off of the movement, the crutch moves rapidly - seems strange. When the pendulum is hung it runs for about a minute and quit.

So, you move the pendulum leader until the anchor touches an escapement tooth, then move it slightly more, this is the adjustment that slightly rotates the anchor on the shaft, correct? (With pendulum removed) I have been holding the pendulum leader in the straight down position and reaching inside and trying th rotate the anchor very slightly, that is sooooo difficult to achieve it in beat, I was shifting the anchor on the shaft, which is exactly what is done in the above description, but this method is very crude and too easy to over adjust. Would you expect all grandfather clocks with the pendulum removed that the pendulum leader would continue to move back and forth when it was in beat? If it doesn’t continue to move back and forth quickly then something is wrong with the clock, correct?

Here is an unaddressed issue, the wheels have come off the cable, and the ends with the stops on them aren’t seated where they should be seated. How do I seat the stops so the wheels are on the cable correctly? I know to thread the wheels back onto the cable but I can’t see where the end with stop seats

When you initially push it are you slightly rotating the shaft on the anchor?

What it does is moves the anchor a little bit

This definitely did not work for my grandfather clock and it felt just wrong. I am going to try it not as leveled and see if that works. When it was originally un level it seemed better. Everyone said to level the clock and then it was out of beat.

I know this is an old video but mine doesn’t seem to stay moving at all. It looks like if I manually move it the gear it hit just keeps hitting back and forth in the same spot - any ideas
