You make this look so much easier than I did it, haha. My tiny planes took hours to figure out how to hold the blade to sharpen correctly without rounding the bevel.
@AdrianPreda4 жыл бұрын
Crazy things happens here also :)) If the 1 and 5k went pretty smooth, when I've reached the end of sharpening at 8k I decided to give another 25-50 final strokes, but Idk what happened, maybe hand was tired, I have made a tiny round bevel...so again back to 5k, again to 8k. But the worst was this, after all kanna tuning finished, I was anxious to try it without filming, so I found a scrap pine piece lying in the shop and give it a try. After a few shavings some weird high pitch noise sound...because I'm doing a little renovation in my workshop, so construction materials there etc, a very tiny, let's call it itsy bitsy like in the title :)), piece of cement thing was stucked into that wood and made a damn hole in the blade's tip :) So there I went again resharpening the blade.

Hello. I admit my ignorance. I did not know that the table behind the blade was higher than the one in front on the Japanese planers. Nice video. Thank you for sharing.👍
@AdrianPreda4 жыл бұрын
From what I've learned too, if the plane is used for fine finish or rough work you only need the surface in front of the blade, and there also just 2 contact points, in front of the blade, and at the end of the sole, same I did when I've used the miniature western plane to create that hollow. For intermediate work, trueing boards of woods, you need 3 contact points, those 2 mentioned before in front of the blade, and one on the back/end of the sole/plane, behind the blade, the part that I have recessed completely, since I'm using the plane just for smoothing.

Can you explain why the plane bottom has to have a lower portion in the middle of the material in front of the blade and also the portion removed behind the blade? Is it so it slides easier? I think of steel hand planes and I thought their bases are completely flat.
@PlanB_design14 күн бұрын
It's commonly said to reduce frictions between the plane and the material, and not picking up small high spots, but fundamentally, the composition of Japanese plane won't allow the whole surface to be flat. As the blade goes deeper into the wooden block, the block around the blade gets pushed away, and the surface gets distorted. So let's say the whole surface is flatten within 0.01mm at a certain blade depth. If you can replicate the setup exactly the same, then it could work, but it's possible it stops working by the change in moisture or blade wear outs, which reduces the amount of stick out. More blade stick outs, more distortion, no shavings. In real life, we change the blade depth by situations like roughing and finishing, and the plane must be set to work at those various situations. Wood can warp, twists day to day, so just having the essential spots to be in the same plane is just easy to maintain.
