A couple things I think you're missing, Nerdy. In terms of why the RCE mercenaries follow Murtry's plan, it isn't that they've looked over and judged the plan themselves. To them, he is their superior officer during an active conflict. They don't question his orders because it's not what they've been trained to do. He gives the orders, they follow the orders. That's it. Wei is the exception only in that she's shown personal loyalty to him beyond that, but generally speaking, there's no reason to believe the other mercenaries need any kind of loyalty or affection for their commanders to carry out atrocious crimes. That's how PMCs like Blackwater operate. Also, the UN did not send RCE to Ilus. RCE staked a claim under UN law, but the UN has no presence on the planet outside of Holden and the Roci crew. It would be RCE ships with more RCE mercenaries with every incentive to cover up their crimes who would be coming to back them up. And while the Belters' messages broadcasting Murtry's crimes did reach Earth, think about how common it is for us today to see and hear testimonials of crimes committed by armies, companies, or police, often with video or some other kind of irrefutable proof, and then nothing happens. RCE is described as a major corporation in this universe. They would have more resources, more lawyers, and more political influence than anything the Belters could even hope to oppose, and they would use it all to suppress, diminish, and obfuscate the Belters' claims until they got ground down by the legal system. Avasarala might have some sympathy for the Belters at this point in her character arc, but she doesn't control the courts and she can't go to war with the equivalent of Haliburton. No doubt it would cost her some political capitol with Belters with whom she is trying to maintain a peace, but championing the Ilus Belters' cause at the expense of a legal corporate claim would destroy her at home.

I think in the early part of the season Nerdy was too busy looking for production errors and missed half of the story. RCE are goons with a government stamp of approval, like Blackwater, the Dutch East India Company, the conquistadors, etc., etc. Murtry didn't need a long sob story to earn his team's loyalty; if he didn't have it before they arrived, he certainly had it after Belters killed 23 members of their crew!

@@N_F414 What else could it possibly be? Except for the protomolecule itself, and perhaps the Epstein drive, everything else in the show is an extrapolation of real things which exist. Obvious military contractors are obviously military contractors. They weren't UN marines or soldiers, so that kind of narrows it down to them working for a commercial interest. The entire visual motif of doing the super wide cinemascope format when we're on Ilus is meant to reference westerns. The old west was filled with land grabs and political maneuverings over controlling who would get a charter to what during the westward expansion. In one way, the authors are being subtle about it, but in another way they're beating us over the head with it. Why would they have to spell anything out? Assuming that the audience is not smart enough to catch your references is insulting, and none of us would be fans of The Expanse had they done this. But in order to catch these references, you have to *pay* *attention*, and reflect on what you're watching.

The show changed Murty a bit; it wasn’t about money for him. It was about doing his job to an absolute fault. He literally tells Wei and the RCE Security Team that he is fine with everyone dying as long as the can build a semi-permanent structure to maintain RCE’s claim on New Terra (not Ilus because that’s the belter name for the planet.) He’s a grim dude who represents the cold nature of corporations and the decision-making process of capitalism.

Holden's word is very important. He has made it clear he will support the belter's claim to the planet, and if that happens Murtry will lose out on a lot of money. Like, a crazy a lot of money. The only thing truly standing between Murtry and his payday is Holden and the belters. With Holden and Amos gone, he can make any excuse he wants to justify either killing the belters or forcing them off the planet. The part about the shuttle is a good point. It's clear he wants to destroy the Barb thereby cutting off the belter's wealth they've mined as well as their ability to get supplies, but I have no idea how Murtry would make it off the planet unless they planned to wait for a supply ship (which would be months)

Wei thought she had Amos figured out, but she didn't understand him at all and she died because of it. Murtry will kill every belter on the planet and blame it on eye slugs, and since he planned to kill Holden and Amos there would have been no witnesses to disagree with him. The rest of the RCE crew on the ground could have been killed as well along with the belters. He told Wei that the value of the alien technology on the planet was worth far more to him than even the millions of dollars of lithium. Murtry isn't thinking ahead like you are Nerdy, he is thinking of the eventual payday. Even if he and Wei and the other RCE folks have to wait weeks/months for rescue from the planet's surface, they will be beyond rich for the rest of their lives. The planet is a gigantic machine that Holden interrupted the reboot cycle for and the power plant for the entire planet exploded. Whether its active or inert, the payday will be massive for all of this tech. Murtry obviously would prefer Holden stop meddling with it before he breaks something valuable. He likely would have killed Wei to keep the money for himself.

Remember in the seasons's second episode, they showed that the railgun could impart a significant thrust to the Roci. Notice that Proto-Miller was blind to the "eye of Sauron." This was pretty much the most exasperating of all their cliffhangers. Murtry was always the head of security, and thus the commander of the security people. They're private corporate security, not unlike all the stealth ship crews and the Protomolecule hybrid scientists that worked for Mao. There were people turning children into monsters....you think corporate money can't buy ordinary henchmen? There are no laws in space, just cops. You have to keep two things: 1) Employment on Earth sucks. This has been established many times. It sucks to be on Basic. So people are going to bend over backwards when their employer (or immediate superior) tells them to do something. Corporate control is stronger than ever. 2) Because cororations are so strong, they have political backing as well. Just look at Jules-Pierre Mao. So, if Murtry comes back to his corporate masters with a pile of dead bodies behind him, but a silver platter with a planet full of lithium and working protomolecule, they're going to have his back. He can spin whatever story he wants. Anyone who can say differently will be dead. It doesn't matter that Avasarala sent Holden. There'll be na inquiry, but enough money will change hands that nothing will happen to Murtry, and based on comments he's said before, this won't even be the first time.

Basically she feels like she owes him her life, but she's kind of offended Murtry would even make it about money. She also doesn't really understand Amos, thinking he feels about her like she feels about him and would never harm her - he doesn't. He's arguably incapable of romantic love. He likes her, but that doesn't mean for a second he won't kill her - something Wei doesn't really get until it's way too late. I agree about the last light shuttle - maybe they have one more heavy shuttle? They certainly don't have enough supplies to wait another 8 months or more. Nerdy, your logic is sound, but I think Claroux's skepticism over legal action is warranted. Avasarala is a queen in this story and can swing some power around. But no one rules alone. The bonds that let you wield power also chain you to their support. Often the people put into high office can be indebted on a scale you can't even measure in dollars. To take action they first need to measure how the impact will have on them through those ties. If you can afford to do a little pruning to excise or compensate any important supporters for their failed business venture and lost opportunity, then maybe. But if the person in office is spread thin or too many of their supporters' jimmies are rustled then they may deflect and let the issue drag on out of sight in the hopes that it resolves itself and goes away.

Great reaction. I don’t know if this explanation will help and I’m not here to defend the writers and show runners. That was not their last drop ship. It was their last drop ship that didn’t use fusion engines. It used old solid fuel like our rockets use now. Now I agree that since fusion wasn’t working it still wouldn’t make sense to activate the plan then because they are still stuck on the planet. As far as killing belters I don’t think you understand their place in the Expanse universe. They are third class citizens. Plus those particular belters technically aren’t supposed to be on the planet in the first place. They ran a blockade. The RCE has a UN charter and on landing their craft was hit from a sabotaged land pad that killed a portion of their crew. Being head of security and with the commander killed Murthy had operational control. The security crew are going to follow him one because he is their immediate boss, two they agree with his tactics and three human don’t really like belters in the first place. Even the doctor scientist has bad things to say about them when they were headed to the structure and she didn’t know Naomi was a belter. Finally, it takes over 8 months to get from Earth to Illus. The RCE was supposed to be there for years and even if they were supposed to just go there and then head back you are still looking at a year before they get back. Minus Holden making it an issue it wouldn’t be an issue. Which is why Murthy needed to kill Holden.

Murtry is willing to lose his last shuttle if it eliminates both the Barb and Roci. That leaves him with no contestants to RCE’s claim. Then he can hunker down and wait for back up from Earth.

The final shootout between Holden and Murray in the books is FAR more Wild West-y. I love this season. But the New Frontier theme I think was executed just a bit better in Cibola Burn.

I think that nerdy simply does not understand how low the morality of a private troop of mercenaries can get, and how corporate money can ensure them legal immunity.

In the books, the dude on the ship that warns the Rossi was Miller's partner from season 1 that had joined the RCE but that actor got the gig as Magnum PI so... Just wait till Season 5, it's my favourite. literally 6 different storylines and you thought you loved Amos before...just wait lol You want more depth of characters? You're about to get it in spades. Wait till you meet Tiny ;)

Also, there's not a chance for this to happen in the show, as it is, because it got cut short, but Elvi Okoye is actually one of the most important characters in the whole story of The Expanse! Keep reading the books, you'll see! ;)

If you have any doubt about RCE following Murtry's orders, just look at some of the misdeeds committed by any private military contractor operating in Iraq or Afghanistan in the past 20 years.

Murtry is a company man. He doesn't care about his own fate. He just wants the company be able to have the only right there. Murtry has kept them safe so his people trust them. This is much more fleshed out in the books and it's great and frustrating. People do a lot for hazard pay.

The only thing i got to say on the murtry rce thing is look at ALL the people doing what they did for jules mao. People are terrible, especially when they can "other" the enemy, even more so when you add money in the mix. The truly sad thing is that all your issues here are currently happening around the globe right now. Let alone months away on another planet. Edit I wish I had your faith in humanity

I will say that the few mercenaries I've met were pretty stupid.. I think that is a requirement for the job. For me Murtry's rampage is motivated by the killing of his teammates. As a merc voilence is not a big step for him anyway. The rest is just chain of command.

"I just don't buy it." No, you just don't "get" it. I've given up hope that he'll spend more time actually paying attention or accepting that the show is full of people who act on motivations, personal history, in-bred biases etc that don't jive with his personal world view without it detracting from the show. Better to stick with the "that's what she said" and "oo, are they gonna screw now?" content and then just spiel about the things you've missed or don't understand at the end of the show. It's like he's completely unable to even try to insert himself into the context the show is presenting and accepting that the writers know what they are doing, despite it having been repeatedly demonstrated that they do. She does a much better job of discussing things from the context of the show, instead of how she prefers thing to have happened, or want people do, though she usually ends up just giving in and letting him rant.

Nerdy, You have said many times that you do not understand a military mind and you're proving it again. Even among the bad guys. They clearly identified early on from the get go that Murtry's Security force contingent was a long standing functional unit with tight bonds built in battle. Somehow you seem to think it's an ad hog unit of all mercenaries who never met each other and have no obligation or commitment to anything but the credit. The whole unit has spent time shedding blood together. Doing black op dirty work for the company. They know what they are expected to do. Short-term or long-term. Their presence was always going to be the strong arm of the hostile takeoverhaul new tarra/Illus They are blackwate, they are Umbrella UBCS not spetznaz, and not STARZ. They don't have to answer to the government their company does. And if they are the only ones alive to bring the record, it will reflect their story.

RCE and Merty are way worse in the book Merty is a guy the when you meet him he shoot a belter in the head unprovoked first scene he is in. Amos should have killed him day one and see what happened after that.

yet you just can't quit him. 🤣. there is definitely a large amount of "I don't understand it" because "I wasn't paying attention when they said it". The Expanse is not a show that explains something multiple times. Nearly every single line of the show is there for a reason.
