… here he does not attempt to explain where the air fan pattern knob should be adjusted to. Wide open , half way or just a few turns out as the fan pattern adjustment has much to do with what "texture print" you will achieve with the paint once sprayed out on the surface. We can only assume that the fan pattern is open fully. But with that said, he demonstrates as the fan pattern is widened the amount sprayed out is thinned and lighter than if the fan pattern is reduced in accordance to where the fluid needle is adjusted to. This leaves us to believe that to spray properly and with an adequate "flowable" spray amount covering the surface being sprayed one would have to UP the hair pressure slightly to achieve more paint being atomized at any given fluid/air pattern needle setting or decrease / back off on the air pattern needle to achieve a denser yet smaller flow and pattern. Otherwise the end result will be a grainy or slightly textured end product due to either too much paint coming out and not enough dispersant of material between gun tip and surface or intermittent slightly dryer areas due to too much air and not enough fluid being delivered.

Hey zzzz I have a binks model 18 siphon feed gun. Do I have to worry about the tightness of what I call the "butterfly collar" thing that I screw onto the tip of the gun. I know it is used to change spray pattern from horizontal to vertical and all degrees in between--BUT does it effect flow rate? So far I screw the collar on all the way and crank it down at vertical or horizontal. Hope that makes sense. learning

All guns are different depending on tip size...so it will have to be set to taste upon painting. Not all guns will tune the same.

We made this video 20 years ago, on a shoe string budget. No script writers, constant time constraints, etc. Before this video, there was no comprehensive training program for the wood finishing industry, yet the EPA required Wood Product Manufacturers institute new environmental guidelines, which included an operator training program. Manufacturers had to train all employees involved in the finishing process be. We provided them with something that they found beneficial and allowed them to comply. This entire video is over 2 hours long and covers everything a PRODUCTION LINE finisher, Finishing Supervisor or Environmental Compliance Manager needed to meet the EPA rules. It was not intended to be the Ultimate Guide to Wood Finishing. That would take too many videos to cover. We did the best we could in the time available. I hope that you find some benefit in viewing just the clips, that I have posted. There is a portion of the video that covers overall spraying techniques and yet other sections on how to apply specific coatings, such as stains, sealers, topcoats, pre-cats, post0cats, etc. All you see here are just VERY short clips of SOME of the topics covered.
