Good lessons and woodcraft for the newbies and the experienced. The tarp set up shows how to improvise. On my day hikes I carry a daypack that has all the items I would need in case of an emergency. My MLD tarp is blaze orange in case I need to be seen. An alcohol stove with at least two full meals + energy bars. I've seen the looks of folks that thought I'm way over prepared, even for a 2-3 hour walk in the woods. At my age, I want to be fully prepared until the InReach rescue team can get to me when I fall down and can't get up. 😉

Agree. So many tragic outcomes could have been prevented or made less tragic by carrying a couple emergency items. Love the blaze orange tarp idea!

I went on a hike last week with seven people. Only one other person carried the REI 10. Some carried NOTHING, wore cotton sweatshirts and laughed about it. Yeah, it was "only" a mile hike, but geez. Frustrating. Good thing I was prepared to take care of them all, bare minimum, just in case. One person asked me. "Oh wow, are you carrying a knife?" Yes, you doorknob, I'm carrying a knife.
