Had an incredibly successful APRS Track while on a SOTA activation on Sunday thanks to this video. Especially helpful setting comments for the XYL to follow since I was in a remote area in sub freezing temps and snow/ice terrain. Was able to continuously relay my position, status and ETA while out of cell service. Even used the radio to Self-Spot to SOTA. Great feature on the radio, but not user friendly (especially with cold fingers) and lots of opportunities to screw it up with one wrong setting. Definitely want to preset settings and test before heading up the mountain.

I have a FT1D and run a FTM400DR in my vehicle. To clear a Memory channel in the FTM400, I programmed the APRS frequency into one of the "Band Limit Memories". You just have to program the Tx and Rx frequency in seperately. I actually have it in there twice and run tone squelch with one labeled APRSVA for Voice Alert w/100.0hz tone and a second entry labeled APRSMute w/141.3hz tone (you can pick any other tone you like) That way, if the data packets coming across the network become a little overwhelming, I can switch to Mute and don't have to listen to it, which can be a good thing in larger cities. For some reason Yaesu radios have problems decoding packets when compared to my Kenwood TH-D75. I own the FT-2dr & FT-3dr. Putting both radio side by side with the same antennas both stock and later aftermarket, you can hear it received a signal, yet no packet/s were shown or recorded. Adding the TH-D75 next to them (Stock antenna) within a minute or less, it begins receiving Packets. On the other hand, when the Yaesus are taken to a higher elevation than my 2 story house, APRS works fine. Does the chip on the Kenwood have higher sensitivity? I used your video and compared your setting to my radios. They are the same. Thank you for the instructional video. 73

@@jjsemperfi Hello JJ, I love my VX 8GR. Its been bombproof. There are different models the VX8, the 8GR, the 8DR. I have the 8GR and it been a great HT for me. GPS can take a long time to acquire. APRS messaging can be a struggle to use because the menus are cumbersome. If it helps I am planning on upgrading my 8GR to the FT3DR because the GPS is faster and the ability to send APRS messages is easier with the menu and touch screen. It won't be as good as the Kenwood thd74A but it is a stronger radio with better battery life.

Just bought my FT3DR yesterday... 1. Could APRS work in A band? Why and why not? (The reason behind?) 2. Is it a must to mute the APRS? I tried mute the APRS and it happened to be muting all VFO channels on B band. I therefore did not hear anything coming out from B band. 3. My local APRS frequency is 144.640 MHz. Is it a must to bring this frequency up on the display? If I change to another frequency (in VFO mode) or change to another channel (in memory mode), will I still pick up traffic from the APRS frequency? 4. How exactly does APRS work? I mean, where is the APRS beacon and why I can see your location and vice versa, even though we may be 300 km apart and may use different APRS frequency and beacon?
@briangroh4443 жыл бұрын
To simplify - If you're running APRS on B then that's the only thing you can do on B. Yes there are exceptions but, trust me, easier to set your aprs up and leave it alone till you turn it off. The "Mute" option is just another way to stop hearing the annoying digital gargling from packets. You can always just turn the volume on B way down.

There is no command to query a list of local repeaters. But if you use one of the APRS applications like UIview or APRSpoint, you can set them up to beacon objects, such as your local repeater, at regular intervals. These objects would show up on the FT3Dr's screen.

When you look on APRS.fi, are there digipeaters in proximity to you? When you press the Beacon TX button (press Fmw and then BCN-TX), does the radio transmit a beacon and do you receive a response? A digipeater may not be hearing you, which is possible as it could be too far away and the rubber duck antenna does not give you much advantage. Try changing your location and see if that makes a difference.

@KB9VBRAntennas2 жыл бұрын
APRS with a handheld is rough; especially if your community doesn't have the infrastructure to support the handheld radio. Here's some things that can help. First, check APRS.fi to see what is available in your area for digipeaters. If there is no or little coverage, you may need to add a fill-in digipeater. I have a link to a video on that in the description of this video. But most likely your issue may be the antenna on the handheld. Check out this video on the ABBREE antenna, I do a comparison in receiving APRS packets with the stock antenna and the ABBREE: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnfCdKuLeplrj8U If you need more help, drop me a line.

The APRS VFO B signal strength meter and blue light atop the radio are constantly going. Does this mean the APRS is going nuts in my area and I should turn it off? It's non stop.
@KB9VBRAntennas4 жыл бұрын
It could be due to a couple of reasons. Sometimes there is a lot of APRS activity in an area‚ especially if you are served by two wide area digipeaters. You could be receiving the packets from both and the radio is filtering out the duplicates. The other reason may be that one digipeater is stronger than the other and the radio is unable to decode the weaker station. The signal will register on the meter but the signal to noise ratio is too low to decode the information.

I had a rough go when I started with APRS. But I've finally got it dialed in. Check your Squelch level. If it's too high, you're only getting powerful Beacon Signals. If it's too low/open then it thinks it's "busy?" (sorry don't know the technical term) and you won't get tx/rx. That was my experience. I had to build a check-list for all the settings or else I almost always screwed it up but now I'm stunned at the beacons I'm hitting even when I'm in a canyon. Lots of experimenting with the Smart Beacon and Interval Settings as well.

So with this radio, do you need to leave the B channel set on APRS in order for it to auto-beacon? Or does that happen somehow in the background, like with other radios I've seen?
@KB9VBRAntennas4 жыл бұрын
In order for APRS to work on the FT3DR, you need to dedicate the B channel to that task. Other radios that are doing it in the 'background' typically only have one VFO so they are breaking away from the main channel to transmit the beacon.

Thanks! I have the FT2DR. I might have to sell that one and upgrade. A while back I requested you make a video on setting up a two way APRS igate. I did a one way with a Bearcat scanner using an audio cable to a computer sound card input port. You had said this wasn't a good idea but to use a transceiver to setup a two way APRS igate. I think the software I used (AGW Packet Engine and APRSISCE/32) to do this allowed for two way communications with a transceiver and no need for a TNC. Is this correct? Can you please consider making a video on this? BTW I passed the Extra exam last Saturday. Thanks! 73 KA0KAE

The APRS functions on the FT3DR and identical to those in the FT2DR. So the only thing you'll be receiving in upgrading the radio is a color screen and a little more user friendly layout. I still have the iGate video on my list- I just haven't gotten to it yet as I was planning to use a Raspberry Pi as my iGate computer. I think I have too many things going on right now.
