I liked that this video review was more than a unboxing and quick spin through the menus. Bob used the radio and showed the menus and screens while it was being used over the air and not hooked up to a dummy load. I appreciate the extra time and work it takes to make a review video in this manner.

Great video. I did the Mars Cap mod successfully this morning (same as the FT2). There was issues restoring my settings from the SD card. The frequency memory info transfered fine. Overall I'm very pleased. It's essentially a digital version of the Vx-8dr. It's almost the exact size and profile of the Vx-8dr/ gr and uses the same batteries and chargers. Along with a BNC adapter and Signal Stuff antenna, this is my new EDC radio. Now if only RT systems can hurry up with the programming software.

I'm in the market for an upgrade from the FT-2D and am considering this along with the Kenwood D74. Touch screen is ok but never really a deal breaker if not a feature. I've done DSTAR on the IC-51 series radio and consider that an edge for the Kenwood because the Wires set up with the cable kit isn't particularly great. Getting to the main point I'm trying to make; I'd love to see a head to head on the Kenwood and this flagship model Yaesu. In any event and as always, nice review. KK4TBJ Joe D.

@K6UDA3 жыл бұрын
The FT3 /FT5 Isn't a DMR radio. It does C4FM and analog. I'm wondering why DMR is part of your criteria for a Kayaking radio. Wouldn't you be better off using a Baofeng in a baggy or a dry bag? I have an FT2D that has an SD Card in it with all my settings. If I drop it in the FT3D, can I recover from the backup so that I have moved everything over? My complaint - should use Bluetooth for data. The connected device should be able to access/manipulate the SD card files. I’d like to see an FT-3 sans mic/headphone connector, power connector, even SDCard slot. No reason to have any of these anymore (with Bluetooth, built in memory, and drop in charger). That would be fewer things to break/leak/let dust and dirt in.

First, No, the FT2 formate SD card will not work on the FT3. Bluetooth for data? most BT devices are for simple HF audio. getting rid of the SD card slot would not be a good option. suppose your in the field without a computer and you need to reload your image? You're stuck. and as for the drop in charger, until it becomes standard equipment, you'd have to buy one separately before you could charge your radio.

K6UDA Thanks for the info on the format incompatibility. “Most BT devices are for simple HF audio.” Really? Like keyboards and mice? Like my iPhone transferring data to my MacBook Pro or the head unit in my Jeep? There’s no constraint on Bluetooth transferring data of only certain types (like audio). Getting rid of the SD card slot would be a great option, just push the data from one device to another over the air using Bluetooth. You know, like APRS does... As for reloading an image, push it from your phone, tablet, computer using Bluetooth... You’re not stuck at all, and not required to carry separate media. “As for the drop in charger, until it becomes standard equipment...” Make it standard equipment. Really simple. You’re reducing the cost by removing unnecessary components (connectors, flaps to seal, etc) so include drop in chargers... I stated what the benefits would be (water/dust resistance, increased reliability, simplicity...)

You do make a good point about data. Thanks for keeping me humble.

I'm a new Ham and I ordered this HT. Since this is my first HT, what vid would you recommend that would take me through a complete setup/config of the device?

It's so new there isn't one. I think mine is the most complete one
