Setting Up Aquarium Internal Filter

Every aquarium requires a filter to help remove waste mechanically and biologically. An aquarium internal filter is one of the most famous filter in the hobby and instead of being kept in cabinet, or hanging on the back, this filter is kept inside the fish tank against the glass. Aquarium internal filter is cheap to purchase, easy to setup and requires less maintenance.
In today's video, I am setting up aquarium internal filter with a flow rate of 800 L/H. Filter consists of 2 compartments with sponge filters. An air tube pumps air bubbles in the water and adjustable flow direction can be used to create more surface agitation.
This internal aquarium filter is to boost my tropical tank filtration. The tank already has a canister filter which is doing an amazing job in keeping the tank clean.

Don't use power head for tetras and molly they have a very high flow, use canister filter or sponge

Thanks for the advise Shadab, flow rate of the powerhead is low and mostly pointing towards the surface to cause agitation. I do have a canister filter for filtering the tank.

I dont recommend this type of filter (internal) because its not good for fish and water.. Water will be smelly.

sir can i cut my power filter sponge in half and add ceramic ring over it as my internal filter has only one chamber? will it work?

Shouldn't be any issue Saman. Half sponge might require frequent cleaning depends on the bioload of fish in the tank.

Hi mate, I don't use any CO2 in the tank. I do have a layer of Amazonian soil under the gravel which seems to be doing a good job.

It is okay, bubbles is just an added feature which is not suitable for all kind of fish.

They both do the same job, surface agitation so water can absorb oxygen. Water flow from the filter is needed to circulate the water, really important for larger tanks.

I just started in this hobby and I’m concerned about the filter I bought (it came with the 5 gallon tank) since it doesn’t make bubbles. I have 3 guppies only. Should I worry? If I put the output above the surface it will fill my tank with micro bubbles and make the water cloudy, I don’t know if that’s bad or if it’s harmless for the fish. I’ve read that I need surface agitation but I don’t know how to make my filter alone.

Hi Brandon, if the filter was part of the aquarium and came as a package, then you shouldn't be concerned. Don't overfeed the fish and keep the filter below the water level. Surface agitation in this video is just to show filter performance. Guppies don't like too much water movement. Welcome to the hobby and best of luck

Fish doesn't want bubbles but if there they just enjoy 😉 Just check your filter is running or not ? Check the flow of filter. Make sure to clean in week or two

Hey mate, you are right, there are 2 betta fish in the community tank. What works best for me is bigger tank with lot of plants and heaps of hiding spaces. Even the bettas doesn't fight.

Are you using this filter or some other filter? I removed the air tube and pointed out the flow to the surface to minimise the currents. It worked fine for me, and there were no currents on 70% of the surface

It does oxygenate water by creating ripples or surface disturbance. However, main role of filter is to provide surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow which in turns keep aquarium water clean for the fish.

You really shouldn't keep a Betta with other fish. Not even 2 Bettas. They are really territorial and should be kept alone!

Thanks for the feedback Antonio, I believe it depends on the personality of the betta and tank setup. I have had my betta pair in this tank for months now and they are both doing well. Since their introduction, I have had few batches of endlers fry and they have grown big now. Shrimps are breeding well too, I don't see any trouble in my tank.

@@Fishaholic at one time I had a large tank divided into 3 sections with a variety of fish. Each section had 1 betta. My center betta decided he and a neighbor needed to visit. This happened often with no problems between them.
