Recently I shot interviews using a black background. The lighting was in a small, featureless, windowless room. Both key light and fill were lights shooting into umbrellas, which then reflected onto the person, creating soft lighting. I used a hair light too, behind the black popup screen. Because it was a hot day, and I did not want AC or a fan to interfere with noise, and because I did not want the person interviewed to squint, I kept the lighting very low. I figured that I could brighten the interview in post. In post, I found that the black background was more purple than black. Of course, when I adjusted for that, I darkened the person that was interviewed. So I brightened just the midtowns, and altered the gamma a bit. That worked. I had a nice, black background, with a decently lit person. My question is, how come the purple showed up on the timeline rather than black? The refection of the lights was around 3000K. I realized that kind of warm light will add a yellow or orange cast, and I had white balanced - but purple? The other problem was that the interviews were to be shown using a projector. That completely altered the images. The black was fine, but the black people interviewed could hardly be seen, even though they were showing up well on my 27" display. And one of the white people looked overexposed, even though I knew that was to the case. I was devastated. I had missed seeing that a projector is not as sensitive to color as a good display. Is there any general rule of thumb to compensate for the difference when editing? Thanks for your reply.

Congratulations for your videos. I have a question... i must to do a video shot with a subject with glasses lenses... it's very difficult to evitate the reflections of lights in his lens. Have you some suggestion to give me ? Thank you so much.

For glasses, the first thing to try raising the light up to make a higher angle. If the ceiling is low, you could instead move the light closer to make the light's angle higher without actually raising the light. Another thing we've down recently is use a different light modifier if the room is small. So for example, we'll use the aputure lightdome mini instead of the regular lightdome because its easier to maneuver it to a higher angle above the subject.

@@SpokenFrameMedia Thanks for the reply. Very kind. I tried today and actually had to turn up the light to minimize the problem. Thank you

Can the hairlight be a regular continuous light like a godox SL100 without any softbox or does it need to be a light stick or wand like the one shown on the video? Thank you

Ya, you can type of light you'd like for the hair light. The light tube is just our preference right now
