The only thing to note here (which was touched upon in the video) is that you will need a massive amount of light to compete with the daylight coming through large windows. Here they're using 2x Aperture 300s, which are roughly equivalent to a 1K HMI. That's a lot of light! Alternately you can choose a tighter shot and move your light source in closer to the subject. Just be aware that you won't be able to pull this off with a 20W LED panel.

It's great to see someone embrace bright, cheery, high key lighting for a change! Many shooters default to dark and moody "cinematic" (ha!) lighting for everything they shoot. That treatment doesn't fly for a lot of commercial and corporate work. The 7' umbrealla is a good alternative to a large diffusion frame. I can't fit a 4x4' frame into my car, but I could find room for a large umbrella when collapsed. Q: Was the lighting difficult for Michelle to deal with? Overly strong lighting can be really tough on some talent's eyes. She doesn't appear to be squinting, so I guess it was fine for her.
@EpicLightMedia4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah it wasn’t too bright for her. I’ve noticed diffused light even if it’s bright usually isn’t a problem. I think it’s important to have the lights already on and running when the subject enters the room. If a light is turned on once they sit down they might comment about the brightness more often
@davidp1584 жыл бұрын
@@EpicLightMedia A trick that can help is to have the talent close their eys and "look" directly into the light. This will allow their pupils to partially adjust to the light. Then, have them redirect their "look" towards the camera (or interviewer) position before opening their eyes. This can help people who have overly sensitive eyes.

I'm a photography student, and this is better than anything I've seen in a textbook. Showing the "low effort Zoom meeting" baseline indicates what to expect - and to fix - before lighting and each step is clearly explained in context. You worked with existing light in ways I would not have tried to produce quality results with less equipment and labor. And as a still photographer working solo, less is always more. Incidentally, I can guarantee that umbrella will work with HMIs - a lot of traditional strobe heads had 500w halogen modelling lights and those big 4800Ws flashtubes get pretty toasty.

Your video helped me tremendously, dude. But the reason people don't use big white umbrellas is because you're losing A TON of light by reflecting half of it on the inside of the umbrella. That's the reason you're not getting enough output. A bowens-mount softbox would change your life. Keep up the good work. Your channel is great
@jud3son4 жыл бұрын
Nice job on this video. A note on the umbrella. You often have to be careful that the light isn't in front of the camera where if you don't flag flag it, it washes out the blacks or even flares. Plus, if you plan to use it outside, it requires a windless morning.
@davidbroughton52374 жыл бұрын
This is correct. Umbrellas canNOT be used in the afternoon or evening.
@BenSemisch4 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea to use the umbrella. I come from the photography world and actually have one of those, but I'm often left wondering how to mount a light panel to it. Never thought to use a grip head, might have to try that on my next shoot.

A 5 in 1 reflector works also great! I have a 200x150cm that has a great diffusion surface. The umbrella would let more light through, I think, so it's also a nice tool.
