Setting Up WiFi and the App for the EG4 6500EX Inverter (WatchPower)

The most helpful comment here so far is regarding the fact that these inverters TAKE TIME to process. I sat there and sat there and sat there…. Finally after trying over and over… it worked. That is not the best explanation of what I had to go through, but just make sure you are reading and understanding exactly what each step is wanting you to do. I FINALLY got it to work after letting it sit and load and trying multiple times.

Actually after watching this video I went in and loaded both Watchpower and DessMonitor, after some finagling, I got them both to work. They are somewhat quirky but once you get a good understanding of navigating thru the menu's they are actually pretty useful. I use them both now 100% and can monitor my system and change settings when I'm not home, which is great. The Dessmonitor has a substantial number of different functions you can monitor and the best part it stores all this data from each days use so you can also go back in time to see this data. Honestly, I really couldnt see paying for another option, these do everything I need. Thanks for sharing on how to load these, I probably wouldn't have tried without seeing this video.

Glad it was able to help. I think the big thing people complain about is wanting to see real-time data as well as seeing both their inverters (when in split phase) on one screen. Glad to hear that things are working for you!

@@AdamDeLayDIY Yes you are correct as I failed to mention that I am only running 1 inverter, I could see it being annoying not being able to view both when running multiples. As for the real time reading, they do update every couple minutes, which is not a problem for me, but if you want instant feedback then it would be an issue. As for you not being able to get the real time readings, It does work but you can only have 5 up at a time and there are a couple that if selected will prevent any of showing up, you just have to play with the different combinations to figure out which ones unfortunately. Since you have SA this is not a concern, but this might help some other viewers that might want to try it out and dont want to pay for a more advanced system.

Thanks for the video, I thought I was the only one frustrated until I watched your video, I had trouble switching to the wifi module, in the app it was still showing the House wifi although I was clearly not connected to the house wifi anymore, helped by forgetting the house wifi and only using Cellular Data

I ditched the wifi. Didn’t like it compared with the Growatt front end. I ended up using solar assistant. I wonder how much power the internal wifi is using. I would like an option to disable the internal wifi (Signature Solar if ur listening.) 😊

I've been struggling with watchpower app for days so I'm just going to say screw it. MPP solar ships a CD and instruction manual so you can install on a computer or scan QR code to install on your phone, with a wifi adapter . My Victron smart shunt tells me pretty much everything I need to know about the batteries and the inverter idle power consumption. For my goal of building a backup power system and running mini splits off grid there is not much the app can do for me. Maybe if I was running my whole house off grid wit a large solar array it would be helpful?

@@AdamDeLayDIY Thanks for the suggestion. The inverter I have does not have built in wifi. You have to occupy the battery communication port on the inverter with the wifi attachment they include. I was just curious, data tracking and logging is not important to me and my situation. Thanks again and good luck.

@@pryda1 you don’t need wifi to use Solar assistant. If your inverter can use WatchPower, it can also use Solar assistant. You just plug your inverter into the raspberry pi running SA.

Nothing specific to grid power. The history tab does record grid voltage though, so you could scroll through the events to see when you lost grid voltage.

I just used the same ones from watchpower. I seem to recall that the username in Dessmonitor might be case-sensitive. I had to add a capital "G" to the username in Dessmonitor to let me in.

Looking at signature solar for the latest 6500EX manual, there is a version 2.3.1 - but it's not dated...

When I look at the file path of the manual, it looks to be dated March of 2023. No specific date. I know 2.3.0 was December of 2022. I’ll have to go through and see what changed.

Agree watchpower setup was challenging to say the least. As noted, it only updates every 5 minutes but you can change that frequency in your inverter settings. I use the app on my phone primarily to see if I switched to grid power. The DESSMONTOR I use on my PC and it is useful. I wish it would summarize the two inverters but to find out total generation I need to add the values from Inverter 1 and Inverter 2. I may see if there is a docker that someone has created that could access the same information. Good video, highlights the frustration. The reason it asks for location as it will help in determining the correct time zone for reporting. This can be changed in dessmonitor. It may default to Tiwan initially.

What setting in your inverter controls the update timing? After your comment I thought it would be 94 for the data log recorded interval but that was set to 10 min on my inverters but WatchPower updates every 5. Dessmonitor was better, but still seems really glitchy. Doesn’t display info you ask it to. One thing I do like is the ability to see the detailed data log. That’s one big plus, but I can see that in SA as well. The ability to combine data about your environment is a big thing I see a lot of people complaining about. Personally I would rather it ask me for my time zone. Then i know how my data’s being used a little better. Hate when apps ask for my location…

Most of the time when this happens it’s due to a server problem. It seems like the server that processes the WatchPower information is having issues again.

It's possible that the server which processes all the data is having an issue at this time. I've heard of other communication issues with the WatchPower app within the past few days.

I know there’s a “forgot password” option in the app, but that won’t help if you can remember the username. You might have to contact your vendor to see if they can either look up the username or put you in contact with someone who can. Sorry about that.

If you can’t see the wifi name being broadcast by the inverter, then there’s something wrong with the inverter. To my knowledge it should always be broadcasting. You could try using the installed version of WatchPower that came with the inverter. That way you don’t have to worry about the wifi on the inverter.

All these Solar companies want your location to run their usually terrible apps. Renogy does it, the battery supplier I use wants it, my shunt app wants it, etc etc. I wonder how many preppers out there bought off grid systems for their SHTF cabins and then told the Chinese exactly where it is while trying to monitor their solar usage or configure their device. At least on Android you can get apps that forces the phone to report an inaccurate location, then you can set your fake location to be The White House or something.

It really is a pain. On whatever device your trying to use to set everything up, try disconnecting that from your house wifi. That way the app won’t keep trying to switch back to that instead of waiting for the inverter.

@@ahmed198630 Usually that means 1 of 2 things. 1. Either your inverter has lost it's internet connection. 2. The servers that the WatchPower app connect to are offline. Try logging in to www.dessmonitor.com/ and see if you can see any information there.

The serial number doesn’t get used for anything. The PN is what’s used to make an actual wifi connection to the device.

I’m not sure how to remove the device from the account. I don’t think there’s any “de register” option. I don’t know if a factory reset on the inverter would do this or not. I know when I wanted the inverter to stop sending data to WatchPower, I had to “connect” the inverter to a different wifi network but I purposefully entered in the wrong password. Then I knew my inverter wasn’t sending data to the internet.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Can you hear this? It's the sound of my forehead on my desk! I kept trying and trying having all of the same problems you had, then ding! Ding! Ding! Success! Turn on location services! When I went to school, (just after the dinosaur age), IIRC, 100% was the most you could have of anything. Apparently, with watchpower it's possible now to have batteries that can hold 153% charge! Maybe Chinese numbers work differently? Also interesting to see/learn is that all of these 6548 inverters are pretty much the same, and all of them use the same exact shitty manual. Oh, and hey, while we're here, tell me if you've ever heard/seen this one. I'm 153% percent off grid 😉. I'm running two of these for split phase. Program #1 is default (USB). If I have my panels switch on, and I add generator power, I get an alarm #32. (Communication failure between inverter and remote display panel) If I turn either of them off, all goes back to normal. Any guesses, because so far I'm the only guy on the planet with this issue?

I've run enough Trojan L-16's into the ground to provide the US with enough lead to support a war. About 7 years ago I was talked into going 24V using TE 100-13's that were supposed to last maybe 15 or 20 years. Yeah, fat chance! So here we are with these 6500's or AKA 6548's running these 51.4 Lipo4 batteries with a mind numbing 10 year warranty, I'm running the Sungold version, and I'm pretty much on a first name basis with Alisa at tech support over in China. Every week, it's something, a shutdown, a code, an impossible something, and I'm basically left to figure it out on my own, because apparently I'm the only person on the planet that has any problems with these things. I've never spent so much time trying to keep power running to my house and at the same time blowing things up that can't handle shutdowns in mid cycle with numerous restarts. I really am beginning to hate these things.

Yup. I would personally recommend looking into Solar Assistant. EG4 recently released their own app called “EG4 EX”. It’s based on the same data as the WatchPower app but it seems to be much nicer. Unfortunately it still has its own list of bugs, but I would still use it before WatchPower.
